Banana-gate

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 15:00

DH offered to get a few needed things from the supermarket, including 'RIPE bananas'. I explained to him that I needed ripe-as-possible ones because I'm making a banana loaf this afternoon.

He returns with GREEN BANANAS.

I've had a bit of a pop at him - as in, why do you never listen, and he says I'm being unreasonable.

AIBU to make him go back to the shop? Or shall I just go myself? Or miss out on delicious banana bread and do it tomorrow?

Teeny tiny first world problem, obviously.

The internet says

Bake at 350° F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the bananas are completely blackened. Let them cool, scoop the banana from the peel, and mash for banana bread. The microwave oven is another way to ripen bananas for banana bread or other recipes. Peel the bananas and place them on a microwave safe plate or bowl.

He’s an idiot though. Why doesn’t he listen?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 24/01/2019 15:03

What did he say in his defence?

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 24/01/2019 15:03

When I decided to make salmon and water cress fish cakes I wrote the ingredients on the shopping list for dh (sahp does the shopping and very grateful).
I went to make tea and he had bought salad cress....
Didn't know there were 2 types apparently...

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 15:05

He said two things:

  1. First of all "I didn't hear you say that..."

but then changed his story to...

  1. " Well the last time you wanted bananas for banana bread you didn't make it for a week so they were too ripe."

@RhiWrites Oh I had no idea you could microwave them to ripen them up - thank you!

Though, I'm now thinking DH doesn't deserve my lovely banana bread now...

OP posts:
paxillin · 24/01/2019 15:11

Give him a choice of going again or doing the procedure @RhiWrites suggests?

RhiWrites · 24/01/2019 15:13

Banana bread is my fave. I would eat it all the time if I could. Om nom nom

RhiWrites · 24/01/2019 15:14

Don’t give him anyway, send it to me.

ItWentDownMyHeartHole · 24/01/2019 15:19

He now just gets to watch you eat it. However, the microwave ripening tip is brilliant so inadvertently he’s been very useful to me.
Can I have the recipe?

Jakethekid · 24/01/2019 15:21

My local asda, sainsburies etc only seem to sell unripe bananas at the moment. My partner likes green bananas, but I have to wait till they're atleast a bit yellow

ChrisjenAvasarala · 24/01/2019 15:21

Don't mean to be cheeky and hijack your thread but can anyone suggest a tasty banana bread recipe? The last 2 I've made have been really stodgy!

Unbelievable18 · 24/01/2019 15:22

Also wondering about a recipe! Had no idea about being able to ripen bananas in the oven, there's my thing I've learned today!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 24/01/2019 15:30

mmmmmm now I want banana bread...

but yes. Twat.

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 15:30

Decided I'm going to make it and I'll post a pic.

And not let DH have any. Especially not warm from the oven.

I make a gluten free one, it's modified from a BBC recipe..

200g gluten free self-raising flour
50g almond flour
3x large NICE RIPE bananas (mashed with dash of almond milk)
2 large eggs
120g of butter, (swap for sunflower oil if you're dairy free)
140g demera/brown sugar
Sprinkle of nutmeg
Dash of vanilla

I don't time it - but half hour (ish) on 170/180 (fan oven).

NOM!

Can you actually buy bananas ripe enough to make banana bread, unless you go to some sad dusty corner shop that sells two bananas a fortnight?

YANBU to buy bananas for the sole purpose of making banana bread, it's only slightly less ridiculous than buying pancake mix.

if you don't have any half rotten bananas lying around, you make a cake that is actually nice. I may be projecting somewhat because I hate bananas and I hate banana bread even more Smile.

dworky · 24/01/2019 15:33

Don't need to microwave, put them in a sealed plastic bag & the natural gases will ripen them.

OMGithurts · 24/01/2019 15:34

All the bananas are shit and green ATM. Can't get hold of a ripe one to save my life.

OMGithurts · 24/01/2019 15:35

I have had to beat up my breakfast banana while still in its skin, then mash it with a fork, so it is mushy enough to go in my porridge.

Justamemory · 24/01/2019 15:38

Here's another banana bread recipe that I've found to be really good.
Although I throw in a handful of sultanas and dont put the icing on the top.

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/01/2019 15:39

To be honest most of the times I'm at the shops (a few times a week) they don't have any ripe bananas, most of them are green. Given he didn't use that as his defense though, it sounds like there were maybe riper ones than he bought.

LadyB49 · 24/01/2019 15:40

Add often have over time bananas in their reduced corner for next to nothing. I buy them and freeze them. Just defrost for baking banana bread. They will be all soft and jelly-ish ..... Fine for baking.

Onecabbage · 24/01/2019 15:43

I only make banana bread when I have a surplus of over ripe bananas. —completely misses point of thread—

RhiWrites · 24/01/2019 15:44

I also recommend leaving a batch to ripen and then freezing.

My favourite recipe is this one:

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 24/01/2019 15:47

mary berry's banana bread is lovely. I make it loads but I have to gird my loins if no one is in to help me as I cannot bear the smell or feel of actual bananas

It's a love hate relationship, I used to tolerate them, eat one occasionally, then I couldn't face them but could give them to the children but the thought of actually eating a real banana makes me gag now....probably have not had one for about 25 years

but I do like a nice homemade banana bread.

icantthinkofanotherone · 24/01/2019 15:47

You have approached this from completely the wrong angle OP.

The whole point of banana bread is that you never decide to make it and then go and buy some bananas.

The correct way to make banana bread is to go to the supermarket on an unrelated errand, discover stacks of over-ripe bananas that they are selling for a song, and think "Ooh, they'd be good for making banana bread" Grin

Alternatively, the other correct (but slightly less reliable) method is to buy a bunch of normal bananas and forget about them for a week. When someone says "Blimey, I can't half smell bananas" that is the time to spring into action.
