Banana-gate

DH offered to get a few needed things from the supermarket, including 'RIPE bananas'. I explained to him that I needed ripe-as-possible ones because I'm making a banana loaf this afternoon.

He returns with GREEN BANANAS.

I've had a bit of a pop at him - as in, why do you never listen, and he says I'm being unreasonable.

AIBU to make him go back to the shop? Or shall I just go myself? Or miss out on delicious banana bread and do it tomorrow?

Teeny tiny first world problem, obviously.

I love the serious, earth shattering problems we have on MN...lol

TrollQueen · 24/01/2019 15:53

I can't remember the last time I saw bananas that weren't green at the grocery store so YABU and also should have planned ahead better for said banana loaf.

babycatcher411 · 24/01/2019 15:54

Another here that can’t find ripe bananas anywhere. I thought I was missing a trick!
It’s driving me mad, both my son and my other half have a banana a day, so we get through a lot, but my son takes great issue in even slightly green and/or hard bananas. He’s hard enough to get fruit and veg down, without struggling to find ‘edible’ bananas.

The microwave trick will be a god send!!

TrollQueen · 24/01/2019 15:55

@Purplecatshopaholic

That's really unfair, these are problems, they're just really stupid problems.

ILoveChristmasLights · 24/01/2019 15:55

My friend used to work for me, she’d spot my overly ripe bananas, take them home and bring in banana loaf the next day.

...it took her AGES to figure out that the fact I always had over ripe bananas on her first day of two in the office was not some massive coincidence 🤣😂

PeridotCricket · 24/01/2019 16:01

I know this isn't the point of the thread - but Nigel Slater does a lovely banana bread with choc chips. I chop up random dark choc (left over christmas truffles worked well) and leave out the hazelnuts and replace with more flour.

It's lovely. www.google.com/search?q=nigel+slater+banana+bred&rlz=1C1GGRV_enIM803IM803&oq=nigel+slater+banana+bred&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60l4j69i59.4959j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I swear by Mary Berry's banana loaf recipe, it's foolproof!

Jux · 24/01/2019 16:12

I very rarely see ripe bananas in the supermarket. They're always green.

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/01/2019 16:17

Green bananas can contribute to constipation whereas ripe ones have the opposite effect. I like to buy bananas loose so I can select some at different levels of ripeness to get through the week. Not have any luck with that at the moment because they are all green :( Then they all become ready to eat at the same time - it's really fucked up my fruit rotation system... :o

BestestBrownies · 24/01/2019 16:22

@MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours SNAP!! I thought I was the only weirdo who detests bananas themselves but makes a damn fine homemade banana bread, lol

HazelBite · 24/01/2019 16:30

Try Mary Berry's Holiday Banana Cake, I've tried loads of recipes (all good) but DH, who is the expert, says this is the very best.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/01/2019 16:30

I'm now thinking DH doesn't deserve my lovely banana bread now...

You're right. He doesn't. I do. I've been a good girl all day. Done all my work. Listened to DP describe a very tedious IT problem patiently with hardly any no eye rolling, and I've rushed out to pick my DD from school because it's cold and I know she's tired.

Please may I have a slice

HazelBite · 24/01/2019 16:32

As an aside I do a lot of gluten free baking, and bananas are very useful to "glue" all the ingredients together.

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/01/2019 16:36

All you need to do is microwave them for a couple of minutes until they’re soft enough to mash. I love banana bread.

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 16:40

Right, banana bread/loaf is in the oven. Nearly done.

Microwave really helped, but I don't think this will be as good as naturally almost-rotted-forgotten-for-a-fortnight bananas.

It smells delicious and DH has come into the kitchen, sniffed, looked hopeful, and then left, TWICE.

You need to out the green bananas in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana overnight and they will ripen. Wink

If it happens again LTB

ciderhouserules · 24/01/2019 16:55

Only one of my 3 eats bananas, so I buy a hand, which he eats a few of.

Then the rest (one or two) go into the freezer. when I have 4-5, I defrost the black, slimy things and make banana muffins. Grin

Your recipe sounds the same as my muffin one.

Silkyanduna · 24/01/2019 16:55

I can’t stand bananas but love Bsnana bread and only but banana to make it, YANBU

Greyhound22 · 24/01/2019 16:58

When I was in hospital I sent DH to Boots for some Soap and Glory Heel Genius.

He came in plonked a pack of Pears on the table and said 'there's your soap - god knows where that Glory stuff was'.

He has form. I now send him photographs of anything I need.

Fightingfit2019 · 24/01/2019 16:59

I love banana bread. Lovely with a handful or two of mixed berries- strawberries, blackberries, raspberries me blueberries. However it doesn’t keep like this, need to eat it by the next day!!

Cookmysock1 · 24/01/2019 17:00

Banana bread icing. Butter icing with Nesquick banana milkshake powder mixed in

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 17:03

@icantthinkofanotherone you're completely right. I've been a fool!

What's the difference between banana bread and banana cake? (that's a question btw, not a joke!)
