Abbreviations

I really dislike the use of abbreviations on Mumsnet. It's lazy and I feel if you are writing something, spell it out! And I don't know what most of them mean.

ODFOD

PattiStanger · 23/01/2019 10:21

All forums have their own way of doing things, abbreviations aren't compulsory but if you want to get anything out of posting you'll need to at least find out what they mean.

TheQueef · 23/01/2019 10:21

There is a lexicon somewhere to help.
Lots of these are mnet specific.

LostInShoebiz · 23/01/2019 10:22

TNFYNJO

LadyKalila · 23/01/2019 10:35

Those replies just using abbreviations, show a distinct lack of consideration.

Click Talk
Click the down arrow
Click acronyms

If it's different on your system, then the link you want is here www.mumsnet.com/info/acronyms

LadyKalila · 23/01/2019 10:45

Thank you BlankTimes, for your helpful response.

You seriously want to read lots of posts saying "You are being unreasonable" rather than the much quicker to read and skip over "YABU"? Abbreviations are in use everywhere where there's a lot of people talking about the same thing. Do you think we should all be saying "Britain leaving the European Community" every single time rather than "Brexit", or "Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 share Index"?

Storminateacup1 · 23/01/2019 11:19

I tend to just put the abbreviation into Google and it comes up. Easy!

AGHHHH · 23/01/2019 11:20

Lord.

Everyone uses them here. It's pointless complaining about it.

You could also put a tiny bit of effort in and look up the list which is readily available.

AGHHHH · 23/01/2019 11:21

This very board is an abbreviation.

Fatbutt · 23/01/2019 11:34

@doritad ODFOD isn't on the list... WTFDIM? Grin

DadDadDad · 23/01/2019 11:36

I don't really get the "lazy" accusation. After all, you wrote "it's" and "don't" in your OP rather than "it is" and "do not", because contracting and abbreviating is a natural part of communication as long as the other person knows what you mean.

I'd give more credence to an accusation of being cliquey / excluding newcomers. But a list of common abbreviations is readily available www.mumsnet.com/info/acronyms, and posters will normally explain if asked. So I don't think the accusation of exclusivity stands either.

DadDadDad · 23/01/2019 11:37

Sorry, Blank, just noticed you'd already provided the link.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/01/2019 11:38

We don't care OP.

NiteWotcha · 23/01/2019 11:39

Bless!
YABU

RagingWhoreBag · 23/01/2019 11:42

ODFOD is Oh Do F...O..Dear Grin

Nobody has yet posted
FOTTFSOFAWYGTFOSM
But that tends to be reserved for the real GFs. Fuck off to the far side of fuck and when you get there fuck off some more.

I think MN should ban acronyms and swearing too. And they should introduce a uniform and timetable.

CantWaitToRetire · 23/01/2019 11:47

OP, don't forget a lot of people access MN on their mobile phones and it can be fiddly and time consuming to type on a small keyboard so acronyms are more for convenience, not because people are lazy.

CantWaitToRetire · 23/01/2019 11:48

@Fatbutt I didn't know what ODFOD meant either, but I worked out WTFDIM instantly Grin

BlankTimes · 23/01/2019 11:48

No probs DadDadDad, it's much better to have the link posted a few times than not Smile

LadyKalila · 23/01/2019 11:49

Stating the obvious!

This very board is an abbreviation

Contracting is, but abbreviating isn't in speech - we'll certainly not in the circles I keep.

😂 This is gold.

I dislike people that complain about people using abbreviations on a website that's known for using abbreviations.

HTH Hun.

DadDadDad · 23/01/2019 11:54

Hmm, yes, because when you ask people where they are from they always say "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" rather than "UK". Smile
