Smear test and tights AIBU?

This is not a wind up and I don't want the Daily Dial even fucking with this. Long time poster.

So, I have my smear test tomorrow. It's overdue because the last nurse did a really bad job (heavy bleeding for days). I hate getting really uncovered. Would I be U if I wore split crotch tights? My thinking is at least part of me would be covered and I wouldn't feel quite as bad.
AIBU? I don't know if this is just weird. Please be kind. Definitely not a bloke.

WIERD VERY.

Andromeida59 · 23/01/2019 08:26

I was thinking of having a glass before I went but was worried that might make me bleed more.

As I said before, I'm nervous because I've had horribly invasive unnecessary procedures because of being misdiagnosed with gyny issues. I also caught PID from when I had the coil and it perforated my uterus because it wasn't put it properly. I also had to have an internal scan when I had an early MC a few years ago and was left in the maternity unit with the expectant mums when I was being scanned. Put this together with the last smear and the way I was treated It's hardly surprising that I'm nervous.

If people think I'm a man/bloke etc. then good for you. Like I said, feel free to report me. I've come here for advice because I'm feeling scared and quite vulnerable. I'm sure it's fine but it's not till 5.40 so I've got all day to wait.

Long skirt definitely,

you can do this

NoSquirrels · 23/01/2019 08:32

You'll be OK. Just have a quick word with the nurse before that you're nervous because of your very understandable reasons, and they will help you through it.

Sparklesocks · 23/01/2019 08:39

Wishing you luck for it OP. I know a lot of women say the smear is ‘nothing’ to them but many others feel discomfort so it’s ok, it’s not anyone’s idea of a good time!
I remember my first one I didn’t think about what I was wearing and wore jeans, took them off but not my socks - didn’t feel very dignified lying there with my legs spread wearing nothing below the waist except sponge bob squarepants socks!!

Just think it’ll all be worth it for your health Flowers

thecatsthecats · 23/01/2019 08:41

Ugh. I hate the paper 'skirt'. Treating it like it's a shameful and scary thing just compounds any nerves for me. I'd rather the nurse just acted breezy and business like, like the first woman I saw.

The second woman seemed so anxious that I was 'covered up' (when actually I have no shame when it comes to nurses) made me completely tense about the situation - and THAT led to a bad smear and bleeding!

RosemarysBush · 23/01/2019 08:52

Well done for being brave and getting it done. My mum used to wear these special tights with holes in the 80s(I think from BHS), a cross between tights and stockings/suspenders. Supposed to prevent thrush. But no, just a long skirt is my vote xx

Nousernameforme · 23/01/2019 08:57

This has reminded me i have to book mine. I got the letter through last week I thought the wording on it was a bit off though.

It seems to have changed from this is a very important procedure you really should get it done tone to a meh, you can have one if you choose to tone.

TheGirlWithAllTheFeathers · 23/01/2019 09:00

No the tights. That would be weird and would make you stick in their mind. Nurses do so many of these that they're not really focussing on your externals, just that little bit of cervix they need to swipe.
And you absolutely should not have bled heavily after last time. I don't know how cackhanded she must have been to make you bleed.

HairsprayBabe · 23/01/2019 09:05

I second the long skirt brigade.

You can also ask for a small speculum to make things more comfortable.

Passing4Human · 23/01/2019 09:09

Long gypsy style skirt, pants off, bunch up skirt so you can't see what's going on - they will be done in a couple of minutes

That's what I do, flop the legs, sorted lol

Lol - the maxi skirt smear brigade! That's what I do as well. OP I wouldn't go for the tights though. If your nerves about this are really bad it might be worth for next time seeing your GP and asking for a mild tranquilliser you can take on the day. A friend with a phobia of dentists and flying in planes was telling me she does this.

KingLooieCatz · 23/01/2019 09:09

I just had mine the other day and I struggle with them too (obvs no one skips in filled with joy). The nurse was lovely and suggested I put the speculum in myself - that made it so much easier I recommend if you haven't tried it already. She said some people get some medication beforehand to help them relax and it's not unusual - try asking for that, although it might be too late for this appointment.

Hope it goes okay.

CoperCabana · 23/01/2019 09:15

Hope it goes ok.

Well done to all those who can flop the legs and sorted but it doesn’t work like that for everyone.

MissMisery · 23/01/2019 09:16

“I’m nervous about having a smear test, so do you think wearing some kinky underwear will help?”
Biscuit

Gummybear14 · 23/01/2019 09:16

I am a smear taker and wouldn't have an issue with this although it would be a little uncomfortable for us both and you may feel a little OTT. It's hard to explain without sounding horrible but your vagina/legs/anything else are no different to anyone else's and won't be remembered. You will be remembered for the outfit choice though. I have had people ask if they can move their knickers to the side and have tried to accommodate. I would be more concerned about trying to ease your worries and anxieties and just getting the smear done for you. Well done for going back.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 23/01/2019 09:18

Where whatever the hell you like. Those saying it would be weird obviously are nurses. I am. I would just be glad you were getting it done. It doesn't matter one bit what someone is/isn't wearing, as long as you feel comfortable. Good luck!

JinglingHellsBells · 23/01/2019 09:20

I think even with crotchless tights, you might not be able to open wide enough for them to do the job.

BTW crotchless tights are not kinky. There is a brand called Pretty Cool by Pretty Polly.

They are the only tights my elderly mum can wear after years of infections/ thrush etc. I order them for her as she can't get out.

They are totally mainstream and not only found in sex shops Hmm

Angiemum24 · 23/01/2019 09:41

Don’t for god sake.
The6 might think you have a fetish.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/01/2019 09:50

Please don't wear the tights, you'll look like a model for Love Honey.
I applaud you for your bravery, and going back. Just wear a skirt, keep it on, and lift if to where you feel comfortable. Speak to the nurse, and tell her how you feel Sweet, you can do this.🌸

Lovemusic33 · 23/01/2019 09:56

Your just making a huge issue out of something that’s not a issue, wearing tights with a hole in them is going to be weird? Nurses see 1000’s or lady bits, they are going to be more mortified if someone turns up wearing kinky tights?

My last smear wasn’t much fun, took the nurse ages and it was a bit painful (to top it off the nurse was one of the mums I see up school), the nurse was lovely and kept saying sorry and all was ok (I bled a little bit I always do), I wouldn’t be bothered going for my next smear, it’s worth it to get checked?

landgirl1 · 23/01/2019 09:59

How about a skirt and long over the knee or ski socks? Will cover up a lot but not look weird?

MrsRyanGosling15 · 23/01/2019 10:02

Lovemusic I can confirm that those tights wouldn't make me as a nurse feel mortified in the slightest. Why would it? The uptake rates for smears keeps falling. I would just be happy she was getting it done. And to be honest comments like that could just put people off even more.

FloofenHoofen · 23/01/2019 10:05

I sympathise with you OP I really do, and I'm glad you're going to have it done, but please do not wear those tights. It'll just make for an uncomfortable encounter.

WrapAndRoll · 23/01/2019 10:07

Long skirt and hold-ups.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 23/01/2019 10:09

makes me laugh when they say "can't find your cervix" ....I feel like it's an accusation that I am being difficult, and I tend to get flippant and ask if they are looking properly or maybe I did leave it in my other handbag after all Hmm

Be brave OP...floofy skirt/dress that won't need to come off, or long top and leggings.
