To be completely fed up with my uncle who lives in Spain and keeps filling FB with no deal brexit stuff

My uncle is in his late 70s. He has lived in Spain for 30 odd years. He is an artist so did not go out there with a highly paid job or with a steady income, and he did not retire there, he went in his late 40s.

He keeps filling my bloody FB feed with no deal brexit crap. He hasn't been back to this country in 20 years and will be entirely unaffected by any deal. I just asked him if he'll be allowed to remain in Spain after Brexit and he said 'yes, signed and confirmed'. WELL THAT'S OK FOR YOU THEN ISNT IT.

I posted that its a shame my kids won't get the same opportunities. WIBU?

My only comfort is that as he's been there so long I highly doubt he got to vote in the referendum itself.

What do you mean by "no deal Brexit crap" ?

golondrina · 22/01/2019 20:03

What on earth does he mean "signed and confirmed"? Unless he's taken Spanish citizenship he has no real idea what his post brexit legal status will be.

KC225 · 22/01/2019 20:05

Unfollow him for the next few months. I am sure your family will keep you posted about any emergencies

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 22/01/2019 20:06

If we have No Deal Brexit, I don't think his status in Spain is safe. The reciprocal agreements for citizens of EU in UK/ UK in EU were part of the negotiations. Both parties agreed to it verbally but it's not signed yet.

planespotting · 22/01/2019 20:07

Does he own property in Spain? Does he pay his taxes there?
Because things can definitely change for him.
Will he be able to access free health care?
He does NOT know because nobody knows.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/01/2019 20:10

Was he one of the British pensioners living somewhere like Benidorm or the Costa del Sol who were interviewed on BBC Breakfast just before the referendum, who said, when asked about how they were going to vote, with no sense of irony whatsoever, that they were voting leave 'because of all the immigration'.

FloatingthroughSpace · 22/01/2019 20:11

Bibbetybobbityhat
you are right, I meant memes that show Rees Mogg or that guy from Weatherspoons and call for a no deal brexit as the answer to all our problems.

I don't agree with the message but even if I did, it irks me that he is sat in an EU country enjoying the benefits of freedom of movement whilst advocating this right is removed from the next generation.

barbara to be fair to him, no. He does not live in a British enclave and I think lives day to day as if he is Spanish. I believe he owns his home.

I deleted about 70 people and groups from my Facebook last week because I found the things they were posting more and more irritating (for various reasons). I've not looked back so far.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 22/01/2019 20:20

Presumably if he's in his 70s he's drawing a pension and making use of health services though? All of which could go tits up in the event of no deal. I would maybe point this out to him and block him. YANBU to be irritated by someone who is stoking delight at the prospect of his birth country heading into unknown territory and apparently too stupid to realise that this could also well affect him considerably and fairly quickly too.

Lichtie · 22/01/2019 20:24

YANBU, he is clearly old and not entitled to an opinion.
Just hide him on Facebook and problem solved.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 22/01/2019 20:27

My cousin posts stuff like this about twice a day. He has a Polish girlfriend, has diabetes which he needs regular insulin injections for and works at the same company that I do. A manufacturing company that exports over 90% of its produce to France and Belgium. I just do not understand it.
