Basically, France and Germany have signed a new treaty for closer cooperation between their countries. Economic co-operation and military co-operation are included.

This has upset some others in Europe who don’t want France and Germany to have all the power. And led to the disturbing quote above from Italy’s (right wing) interior minister.

Interestingly the story also includes a quote from Angela Merkel:
“Mrs Merkel also said Germany wants to "make our contribution to the emergence of a European army."”

What do people expect. It’s been what they always wanted every normal person saw it coming.

The EU Army part? Or the whole opposing axis thing that sounds like the beginning of world war 1 did? It feels like there are two issues here.

I understood before that “Europe” wanted closer and closer integration, and I understood Germany and France were the dominant players- obviously, they are the biggest countries. But I didn’t realise that they were going to form a club within a club and upset other members so much that they would start talking of axis.

I don’t think feel like this treaty or the bad feeling it has caused is as a result of Brexit either. It seems it would have happened anyway.

What is wrong with it ?

I find both the Germany-France axis and the idea of a Poland-Italy axis scary.

And the talk of the axis being opposing axis is terrifying surely?!
