What do I do about wrong reg number?

I bought a car that has 12M MOT on it (they're 100% genuine dealership).

However, they did the MOT on the car with the old number plate which was personalised to the previous owner. The original number plate is put back on the car now so it means that my MOT effectively runs out beginning of next month with that number plate, even though the actual car has had its MOT. They said DVLA are in the process of changing the number plates back to its original so it hasn't updated on the system yet and it will do once they receive the V5/V62 which they had to fill out.

I'm going to be driving around with no MOT on the system if this doesn't happen soon.... Sad should I just pay to get an MOT done for peace of mind? I just don't know! They might rip me off and end up failing it when there's nothing wrong with it as it has already passed :( I've got the original document saying it has passed with no advisories but it is on a different plate! So annoying.

Does it not have the VIN (not sure if that's the correct word) on the MOT cert?

It's the other cars reg number rather than the licence plate.

Go back to the dealership/garage and ask them, or ask the DVLA.

DVLA change over is instantaneous if done on-line and MOT belongs to car so should all show up instantly. If not contact the DVLA.

I don't have the mot cert as it is on the wrong number plate. I didn't think the vin would be on there? I will need to check and find out where it is first

Its the car that has MOT not the registration number which for practical reasons is just an identifier. You will be fine, just get DVLA to sort it out.

Why did they take the personalised plate off? If it was sold to the dealership with the personalised plate on then the previous owner obviously didn't want to retain it. The dealership would have become the owner of the plate when ownership of the car changed hands.

When you go online to take a personalised plate off, the records are updated instantly and it's the car owner's responsibility to put the replacement registration plate on and change details on the insurance. Usually the car is given it's old registration details back (which it had before the personalised plate was put on). Assuming this was done online, how long after the process were the plates changed? The car should not have been driven with wrong plates on. Also, the personalised plate cannot be reassigned to a new vehicle until the V750 certificate of entitlement has been received from DVLA, which takes about a week. I've just gone through this whole process with my own car.

If the dealership gave the car an MOT with the wrong registration on, then you should go back to them and get them to sort it out as they caused the issue in the first place.
