To ask what you pay per month for childcare?

Currently a SAHM. I have a toddler and a second baby on the way. I'm currently in the bracket of people for whom childcare costs here (in london) would outweigh my own current earning potential, I'm unskilled.

Prior to having DS I worked full time as a cleaner, my monthly take home averaged at £1300pcm. My rent is £1000pcm, then there are bills and food.

I've been quoted around £1000pcm full time childcare for DS alone.

How much cheaper is childcare outside of the SE? What do you pay, per child per month?

£1000 per month for four full days. We don’t live in England, but in a (very) expensive European country. Salaries much higher though, so that goes some way to making up for it.

Missesmop · 20/01/2019 22:22

Jesus so it turns out my estimated 1000pcm was much less than the reality.

This is really eye opening.

I have a DP who works full time but is on a low-ish wage. Even if I were to get my old job back and we both contributed 1k each to the childcare for both children, we'd be spiralling into debt after paying the rent.

I actually hate London.

Sorry, forgot the childcare voucher scheme is closed to new joiners, but there is a new tax-free childcare scheme the government brought in, which will reduce costs a little, and then there's the free hours from 2/3 and tax credits too.

tubspreciousthings · 20/01/2019 22:23

@Missesmop
We do 4 days so it's £200 per week, on average ~£800 per month.

Tax free childcare gives us 20% of the cost, plus tax credits (ifyou can get them) will help too

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/01/2019 22:23

£39.50 a day north west.

3WildOnes · 20/01/2019 22:23

Missesmop I think £1000pm would be really cheap for London.

riotlady · 20/01/2019 22:25

£840 a month for full time nursery in the north east

Missesmop · 20/01/2019 22:26

My figure of 1000 wasn't given by any of the childcare providers, I actually plucked that figure based on assumption more than anything, but also conversations I'd had with a friend about what she pays (she doesn't live here though)

I'm really aghast to be honest.

I pay £5 breakfast club £10 after school club for school aged kids. Paid £46 a full day in nursery

DangerMouse17 · 20/01/2019 22:27

1300 per month at nursery 5 days a week 8am to 6pm. Now more like 230 per month for before and after school club.

DangerMouse17 · 20/01/2019 22:28

And sorry that's in London OP

princesspeppax · 20/01/2019 22:28

£41.50 per day 8am till 5pm i pay 😃 In Scotland

lavalamp08 · 20/01/2019 22:30

It's £39 per day where we go, little one goes two days a week, we provide nappies and wipes but get all meals thrown in
We are from Yorkshire
Not being rude but down south prices are bonkers, I feel your pain Shock

icannotremember · 20/01/2019 22:31

I'm in Manchester. Our cm charges £30/ day. Nursery is £42/day. Our cm is pretty cheap.

Sweetooth92 · 20/01/2019 22:33

We pay £39 a day, 4 days a week for 50 weeks (they close two weeks at Christmas so don’t charge) works out about £630 per month, inc all meals but we provide nappies. He can be there 7-6 for that (not that he ever is but lots we viewed were set amounts of time, I.e. 8/10 hours. We are in the East Midlands. (I also had to return to work for my own sanity, love my son but can’t do 24/7 with him)

Nodrama999 · 20/01/2019 22:33

It was £1840 a month for two full time before the 15/30 hours entitlement but since the 30 hours kicked in the nursery increased by £7.50 a day per child this is in the NW. we left shortly after!

greatbigwho · 20/01/2019 22:33

She did 25 a week (3 mornings, 1 full day) with the 30 hours, stretched for the whole year, it cost me £72 a month.

Nodrama999 · 20/01/2019 22:36

You cannot use tax free childcare (20% reduction of fees - capped at a certain amount) AND have tax credits. It’s one or the other

ID81241 · 20/01/2019 22:43

I'm in the south east too OP, and I think £1000 p/m full time would be a bargain. Maybe you could get a child minder for less though?

We pay £850 for 3 days a week. Could be worse, we used to pay £1000 for a 3 day week at the last nursery so I'm quite grateful for the cheaper rate.

Missesmop · 20/01/2019 22:45

I'm actually aghast that here in London it's known to cost near on 2000 a month for one child full time. That would mean we'd have to pay around 4000 a month in childcare for both of ours to be FT here. In which career paths is that affordable let alone worthwhile for both parents to be working.

It's quite depressing to be honest. I only envisioned being a SAHM for a very short while.

OP posts:
Missesmop · 20/01/2019 22:45

I'm definitely going to look into childminders!

OP posts:
Missesmop · 20/01/2019 22:47

I'm not from here originally hence the naivety toward the higher cost of childcare.

Very sobering reality of life in the SE.

OP posts:
canigetaliein · 20/01/2019 22:48

Have you looked at childminders?
I’m in SW London & my local nursery is £92. By chance I came across a childminder who’s fantastic & charges £65. Still expensive though obviously. DC1 is at school
& wraparound care is approx £15-20 a day depending if you do activities. Luckily we don’t need ft childcare & DH & I are locals so mum & mil help when they can.

howonearthdoyoucopewith3 · 20/01/2019 22:48

I'm in London. It's about £85 a day for nursery or £75-80 for childminder. I sometimes wonder why we live in London!

Arkos · 20/01/2019 22:49

34 a day
