To ask you for a logical explanation to why this ring is burning?

I've found an old ring, it was my Great Great Grandmother's. I'm allowed to keep it.

Every time I pick it up, it goes hot! I thought I was imaging it at first, so picked it up a second time. It's burning hot. DH picked it up earlier, said stop being so ridiculous. He said it was normal temperature, if anything a bit cold Confused

What's going on? Can anyone logically explain a reason for this?

Our DC is just starting to speak and says a few words here and there. He can say "Ouch, burny!" (Taught by us to keep away from hot stuff). I curiously let him touch it and he shouted "Ouch! Burny".

You're allergic to the metal?

LaurieFairyCake · 20/01/2019 19:07

You've got one of those conditions that means you're colder than other people and when you touch normal stuff it's too hot?

Thyroid conditions

LaurieFairyCake · 20/01/2019 19:08

Or your great great grandma hates you from beyond the grave ?

KitschBitch · 20/01/2019 19:08

Defo something 'woo'

rainbowgrimm · 20/01/2019 19:09

It's a horcruxs?

ALittleCrisp · 20/01/2019 19:09

Laurie I don't seem to be having any skin reactions. And why did DS say hot? I didn't let on when I showed him.

I'm wondering if some metals or something react over time. Similar to how you can't use a certain time of thermometer anymore because they can break and leak a harmful substance

Sorry, but the only way to deal with this ring is a trip to Mordor. Check local listings for hobbits willing to do the journey for you.

Good point but wouldn't that have occurred to me before? Never had anything similar happen.

Done I very embarrassingly had to google what Mordor was Blush

I was thinking 'vindaloo', but then I read the post. Oops.

VforVienetta · 20/01/2019 19:15

Can you take a picture for us, or describe it?
Did you DH touch it when it was hot, or at a different time? Really you need to pass it to him 'hot', if it genuinely is heating a ring is so slim the metal would cool very quickly.
Have a look to see if it's hallmarked. An assayed gold ring shouldn't be doing anything suspicious!

Grin ah serves me right for trying to be funny!

Have you worn the ring for any amount of time? Does it leave any sort of mark?

AdaColeman · 20/01/2019 19:17

Yep, keep a look out for Dark Riders and learn to speak Elvish ASAP!

ALittleCrisp · 20/01/2019 19:19

V I've attached a pic

Done No haven't worn it, if I touch it it's really hot! You know like if you've been running the hot tap for a while and then touch it? Like that.

I made DH touch it when it was hot. He thinks I'm bonkers

My precious.....

iklboo · 20/01/2019 19:25

Is it hallmarked or is it nickel? I sometimes get a burning feeling not long after touching nickel.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 20/01/2019 19:26

I'd be putting a thermometer on it to see what the actual temperature was, then I'd blindfold you and test using a selection of rings and getting you to hold just the metal to see if you can feel it without knowing which ring you are holding.

Pachyderm1 · 20/01/2019 19:26

You’re deffo being haunted by your granny.

Booboostwo · 20/01/2019 19:34

Nickel allergy is my bet too. It can come on later on in life and get progressively worse.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 20/01/2019 19:58

I had a gold watch (hallmarked 18ct) which did this to me, and also a diamond engagement ring. I gave the watch away in the end because it was so bad, and I never wear the ring. For added woo factor, they were both inherited from the same person (by my husband) and apparently I am exactly the sort of person she would have disapproved of.
I am prone to allergies, so I expect it was just that, but the watch would only make my skin burn sometimes, it felt like I was being told off by it! Utter nonsense, obviously, but either way I couldn't keep it and gave it to my SIL, -who deserves to be haunted- .

IsItThatTimeAgain · 20/01/2019 19:59

I vote horcrux too.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/01/2019 20:15

That ring looks so modern

ScarlettDarling · 20/01/2019 20:27

It must be woo because I can't see the picture!!Shock

DanielRicciardosSmile · 20/01/2019 20:31

I did wonder where this thread was going from the title - wS going to suggest putting the loo roll in the fridge!

Can't see the picture, but is it possible that a metal coating is wearing off and you and DS are reacting to what's underneath - like a silver plating over base metal?
