To ask you for a logical explanation to why this ring is burning?

I've found an old ring, it was my Great Great Grandmother's. I'm allowed to keep it.

Every time I pick it up, it goes hot! I thought I was imaging it at first, so picked it up a second time. It's burning hot. DH picked it up earlier, said stop being so ridiculous. He said it was normal temperature, if anything a bit cold Confused

What's going on? Can anyone logically explain a reason for this?

Our DC is just starting to speak and says a few words here and there. He can say "Ouch, burny!" (Taught by us to keep away from hot stuff). I curiously let him touch it and he shouted "Ouch! Burny".

Op the thermometer thing is nothing to do with the age of the item - it's just that the liquid inside is mercury, which is poisonous, and always has been.

Old glass thermometers are more breakable than modern ones, because they are made of glass, so best to use a modern one!

Nickel allergy?

abbsisspartacus · 20/01/2019 20:41

Doesn't fish contain mercury?

Put it on an ice cube to see if it melts it

StickItUpYaJumpa · 20/01/2019 22:37

Were your hands wet? That can sometimes cause a sort of shock with some metals.

I can't see s pic though.

Imustbemad00 · 20/01/2019 22:42

I can’t see a picture either but I have no explanation to offer and just think this is really strange Confused

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 20/01/2019 22:42

Is it being stored in direct sunlight or on top of a radiator or something?

I know a fair bit about metal and jewellery and I’ve never, ever heard of a ring just spontaneously heating itself!

Disquieted1 · 20/01/2019 22:42

The ring is made from two different kinds of metal. There will be a thin layer of sweat on your finger that makes an electrical circuit. Hence the heating effect.

Have you ever chewed silver foil? It is agonising. Again, saliva makes a circuit between the foil and any fillings. If you don't believe me, try it!
(Please don't!)

Oh come on OP! Grin

Your little one is just starting to say a few words, and conveniently happened to learn ‘burny’? How does he even know what it actually means unless he’s in the habit of touching hot things?!

Yeah right Grin

TheCounter · 20/01/2019 22:50

Could you ask them to heat something more useful
Like a radiator or the oven. Save on bills

justasking111 · 20/01/2019 22:54

The pic is not here, that is woo...

Amberheartkitty · 20/01/2019 22:58

Osirus · 20/01/2019 23:04

Not in anything like the same quantities as an old thermometer.

MyDisposableUsername · 21/01/2019 07:35

"blindfold you and test using a selection of rings and getting you to hold just the metal to see if you can feel it without knowing which ring you are holding."

^ This.

And, yep. That's not an antique ring...

Yeah right

Sorry? I thought it was obvious - teaching small children "Ouch! Hot" when something can potentially burn them is common place, isn't it? I've seen loads of people do it, loads of family do it. When they go near an oven, a fireplace, anything.

Even though they'd never be able to touch it, you teach them it will hurt

What are the hallmarks?

SoupDragon · 21/01/2019 09:30

Try to photograph them by zooming in on your phone (it's tricky, I tried yesterday!)

AleFailTrail · 21/01/2019 09:35

Your great great grandmother was Sauron.
Don’t try and take over the world whilst me and my gang of adventurer friends are on hiatus please
