I'm fascinated with true crime and was having a conversation with my Grandad once. He told me that one of his brothers mates was friends with peter sutcliffe, and that he had met him a couple of times.

Interested to know if others have have had encounters or known a serial killer

I used to live very close to the house Suzanne Capper was kept and tortured in, I know some of the family of 2 of the murderers and worked with their son for a few years, felt very sorry for him

I've got a creepy tale. When I was a student one of the senior staff was telling me that a probation officer colleague was given a case where he had to write a pre sentence report. The client was one of the top IRA men and was held in HMP Full Sutton in York. So he went and did the 1st part of the interview, this was the first time the prisoner had his name etc. Later that day he went home and on the door of the house were 4 wreaths with all the dates of his wifes and childrens birthdays. This was before the internet and mobile phones etc. There was only the landline and the yellow pages/ phone book etc.
Their intelligence was that good, but how did they get all that so fast? The worker was moved and the prisoner was shipped out. The wife was totally terrified.

My mum’s partner when I was a teenager, his dad killed his mum and then himself (so a murder suicide). Sadly, it was a case of the mum having dementia and very complex needs and the dad could not cope and had no support.

I remember us having to search for a cleaning company to come clean up the house that specialised in murder scenes basically, and then the extended family came over to our house and ate pie like all that was just normal.

canigetaliein · 20/01/2019 20:53

It makes me so angry where a murderer is freed to murder again. Lots of low sentences for men who kill wife’s/partners/ex’s etc.

My MIL worked with a lady who killed her daughters boyfriend. The daughter & mother did it together. Think they wrapped the body in a carpet & dumped it somewhere, the carpet helped the police solve it from memory. Apparently he was abusive & it was the only way that daughter could “escape” unharmed. MIL said she was nice & quiet, pretty sure the sentence was long.

My cousin went to the same college and used to chill and smoke weed with Salman Abedi- the Manchester Arena bomber. The attack hit Manchester really hard, but knowing the cunt that did it made us more confused than anything. Was a quiet cool young lad really.

Brummiegirl15 · 20/01/2019 20:55

I've got nothing to add, but this is a really fascinating thread!

Wouldyouorshouldyou · 20/01/2019 20:59

I've known a few. One personally who was a horrible man. Hated women and dead inside. He murdered 2 blonde women in a horrible way. Went on to boast about it which was how he was caught. He was later diagnosed a psychopath and will never leave jail.

Others professionally have been a mix of normal to horrible.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 20/01/2019 21:00

Jeremy Bamber is an odd one. Remember watching a doc on him and not being able to say I felt he was innocent ... but also getting a weird vibe from one of his cousins who was interviewed.

DM watched it independently of me and mentioned a week or two later that she felt the same, and that if JB hadn't shot the family, this guy would have done something to the sister of JB as he seemed a bit fixated on her.

canigetaliein · 20/01/2019 21:00

Also one of DHs friend went to a young offenders institute (not for murder). He’s turned his life around & done well but he is definitely a bit dodgy still, his dad did time for armed robbery so not a great role model.

Bahhhhhumbug · 20/01/2019 21:13

Fred West, a colleagues mum, an elderly lady at the time, had her garden done by him. Couldn't believe it when he appeared on telly as a mass murderer, said what a 'nice pleasant lad' he was and helped her out with some other household stuff free of charge. Till day she died she wouldn't have it, what he'd done. My workmate used to shudder at the thought her DM was alone in her house with him for days.

NorthernLurker · 20/01/2019 21:19

My great grandmother discovered a murder. Next door but one house, the neighbours in between said they'd heard noise and would she come. So she went over and found the Male householder had killed his wife with an axe. He was found nearby having killed himself.
Great grandma never forgave those neighbours. She felt they knew what had happened and called her instead of the police so they weren't 'involved'. Meaning she walked in on an awful scene.

TaintforTheLikesOfWe · 20/01/2019 21:20

I went to school with Michael Ryan in Hungerford.

He was a twat. He could barely write his own name.

Lavenderee · 20/01/2019 21:21

Two men I’ve known have killed their babies. Both shaken and had their heads hit against hard surfaces. Years apart though. One was a little girl, who survived her injuries with horrible brain damage for a few months and then passed away, and the other was a little boy who pissed the dad off because he wouldn’t stop crying.

And as a teenager I got lifts from someone who, years later, was done for two murders and is suspected of many more.

Why the f*ck am I reading this thread home alone at night ShockConfused

Insomnibrat · 20/01/2019 21:30

Me too @Firstworddinosaur
I've just had to go and check the house is all locked up & 'safe' Grin

Mummylife2018 · 20/01/2019 21:32

My ex was Peter Sutcliffe's relative (aka Yorkshire Ripper). Only found that out AFTER we dated I might add!

TheDarkPassenger · 20/01/2019 21:32

I also know a guy who killed his baby. (Seems awfully common Sad)

One of my old regulars from the pub I ran murdered 2 people. I always knew he was odd and had a huge god complex. I used to tell the young girls working for me never to ever be alone with him. He’s locked away now.

At school I was quite good friends with a guy who I lost contact with as we grew up, though still sometimes sent the odd Facebook message. Turned out to be one of the UKs most serious paedophile and child molester, as part of a big grooming gang. Makes me feel so sick.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-23423898

Yes I've name changed!

I worked in a place where these were BOTH my customers. I always felt a horrible feeling about the murderer - everyone said he was harmless but I used to avoid serving him. Then he goes and murders poor David Guy about 2 hours after I served David Guy and the last time he was seen alive. So sad. The details of this case are shocking and suffice to say I was right to feel horrible around the murderer (I wont give him the benefit of using his name here you can read about it in the article) trust your instincts everyone!

Oopsusernamealreadytaken · 20/01/2019 21:36

My engineer at work, fixed a machine of Ian Huntley’s. Without going into it too much he was well known by the company I work for too

SallyOMalley · 20/01/2019 21:37

I worked with this woman in the early 1990s.

She used to come to work in her motorbike leathers and was training to be a psychotherapist when I knew her.

Then, a couple of years ago, I was idly watching one of those real life murder programmes and up she popped. Such a distinctive name - it's definitely the same person. I couldn't believe it - she seemed so normal.

BingoBamBam · 20/01/2019 21:40

@SallyOMalley hells angels are absolutely nuts. It's like a cult !

I knew a guy who once worked with John Christie the Rillington Place murderer. Said he was the most straight-laced and upright blokes he ever knew.

CurcubitaPepo · 20/01/2019 21:51

I was at school with someone who was jailed for armed robbery, and who subsequently killed himself in a suicide pact in prison. Sadly they weren’t a nice family.

An American friend went to the same school as Ted Bundy.

A former colleague used to have Harold shipman as a doctor.

BootsMagoots · 20/01/2019 21:53

In my line of work (social housing) I tend to meet a lot post release. A few years ago I was heavily involved with a young man with mental health issues; he was quite attached to me. I was in Spain with family watching the news and I saw his face, police were searching for him as he had murdered his mum and sister and went on the run, it sent chills up my spine given how close he was to me.
