To ask if anyone has had a baby with the flu?

Worried about possible exposure and hoping for reassurance - is it always extremely serious for an older baby? I know flu can kill but think it is usually a mild illness?

Is your baby ill? Or are you worried that you have had contact with someone who has flu? Are you sure the person actually had flu, confirmed by a doctor?

Onthesofas · 18/01/2019 20:37

Contact - not formally diagnosed but bedridden for two weeks

Before anyone asks no I'm not normally this anxious! But would be reassured to know it's normally mild if caught

Flu is not a mild illness. It is debilitating.

Tunnocks34 · 18/01/2019 20:48

I had the flu over Christmas, diagnosed at hospital as I collapsed.

Neither of my children got it and they were cuddling and kissing me before I know I had the flu.

People say it’s debilitating and you can’t move etc, I actually cooked Christmas dinner on day two of the flu - although I collapsed Boxing Day!

Flu can range in severity, from completely asymptomatic (that is that you have flu, on testing, but didn't have any symptoms) to extremely severe, in which case it is often the secondary illnesses that cause the problems.

Contact with someone who has flu doesn't necessarily mean that it would pass on.

I don't know of anyone but I think the baby would probably need to be hospitalised and it would be taken very seriously.

RayRayBidet · 18/01/2019 21:13

How long ago was the contact OP?

HomeMadeMadness · 18/01/2019 21:14

Flu can be bad but not always. I've had flu confirmed by the doctor and felt pretty grotty but it's not the worst bug I had. Before I realised it was the flu I popped to the shops.

I'm all likelihood the baby won't catch it. Dc1 was a toddler and had been cosleeping and didn't catch it (obviously he stopped cosleeping once I was sick but I would have been contagious before then).

Onthesofas · 18/01/2019 21:15

Contact today (we thought it was due to something else) I know flu is normally only contagious for a week or so but still having symptoms (person is immune compromised)

All you can do is keep an eye on your baby and see gp if needed.
In all likelihood everything will be OK. Try not to worry
