To not tip the hairdresser?

laurag33x · 16/01/2019 13:06

Always an awkward thing for me.
I'm at the hairdressers every 7 weeks and it costs £120 for cut and colour.
It's a big hairdressers with about 12 stylists and is a chain salon.
Aibu not to tip?

Oh dear, I never realised it was expected, I hope mine doesn't think I'm mean!

19lottie82 · 16/01/2019 13:09

I don’t tip the hairdresser, but I always give the apprentice who washes my hair, a few pounds.

Pachyderm1 · 16/01/2019 13:09

It’s a bit tight, isn’t it? If you can afford a £120 haircut you can afford to chuck a tenner at your stylist. I always think you should factor tips into the price in situations where tipping is customary.

Huffleypuff · 16/01/2019 13:10

Is tipping customary at a hair salon though?

PinkGin24 · 16/01/2019 13:10

Nope. I never tip. It is their job...

19lottie82 · 16/01/2019 13:10

I wouldn’t say it is customary at the hairdressers though? I would tip in a restaurant or in a taxi but not for a stylist.

secondarymincepie · 16/01/2019 13:12

I've never tipped at a hairdressers, didn't realise it was a done thing.

Pachyderm1 · 16/01/2019 13:12

Maybe it’s not customary everywhere then. I’ve just always tipped and always see others doing the same in the salon I go to.

A good hairdresser is gold dust, and unless they’re head stylist or the salon owner they’re usually paid peanuts!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/01/2019 13:13

I tip for exceptional service. My hairdresser is brilliant, ditto my beautician.

I don't do 10% in restaurants, not unless the service has been excellent. I don't make a mess either. I round up in taxis.

legolimb · 16/01/2019 13:14

I tend to just round it up - but my haircuts aren't as pricey as yours.

It's generally only £2 or £3 though.

Your choice - but you're paying a heck of a lot already so maybe just take them some chocs in at Xmas or whenever.

Geminijes · 16/01/2019 13:17

I don't tip but at Easter I take in chocolates or a large Easter Egg for the stylist and Christmas time I give him a few bottles of wine, (he owns the salon along with his sister).

DonCorleoneTheThird · 16/01/2019 13:17

YANBU

Why should we tip some people but not others? You are paying, and paying well, for a service, that's enough.
If you always have the same stylist, you could give a voucher for her birthday or christmas, or you could just say thank you!

DanglyBangly · 16/01/2019 13:18

I pay around £60 for a haircut and tip £5. I thought it was the done thing.

acatcalledjohn · 16/01/2019 13:22

Tipping customary in a salon?

Oh bollocks is it.

I find this attitude that the customer is responsible for topping up someone's wages beyond the list price charged very bizarre. If they want to be paid more I suggest they put their prices up. We are not the US.

TinTinBanana · 16/01/2019 13:26

I used to tip but have stopped. I just tip at Christmas and am happier doing this.

laurag33x · 16/01/2019 13:27

I gave her £10 in November as a Christmas tip but I'm due in tomorrow and really don't want to tip another £10

@acatcalledjohn

Yes. This exactly.

crazycatbaby · 16/01/2019 13:27

I'm a hairdresser, I certainly don't expect tips. We do get them though which is nice, i wouldn't think somebody is tight if they didn't tip. I think the juniors always appreciate a pound or two if they've washed your hair and given a nice head massage/got you cups of tea etc. They're always very grateful as if they're an apprentice they're on an apprentice wage, and it makes them feel an important part of the team x

RelaxedSelfGuiding · 16/01/2019 13:28

I don't tip at hairdresser or beautician. They cost enough as it is! However I do give £20 at Christmas to each

PatchworkElmer · 16/01/2019 13:30

My Mum’s always tipped the hairdresser, so I also thought it was the ‘done’ thing. I just top up the price of my cut up though, so all in a cut and blow dry is £50 😱

PatchworkElmer · 16/01/2019 13:32

crazycatbaby that’s a good point, I might start tipping the lady who washes my hair instead, and then I can maybe give my hairdresser a bigger tip at Christmas

CreakyBlinder · 16/01/2019 13:33

I don't tip. I'm sure they already make a good profit off of my £115 cut and colour.

NailsNeedDoing · 16/01/2019 13:34

YANBU. I gave up tipping at hairdressers years ago. I felt awkward the first few times but it's really quite liberating.

I hate the culture of pointless tipping, I'd much rather be free to choose to tip if someone has really gone above and beyond what they are reasonably expected to do as part of the job they are already paid for.

People don't expect tips as standard any more, and if they did, or they took offence to not receiving one, then that's a reason for them not to be deserving of one.

DorisDances · 16/01/2019 13:34

Etiquette was you tip the stylist (or share with apprentice) but no need to for salon owner

Oopsy41 · 16/01/2019 13:34

I always tip hairdressers but not sure why. My hairdresser is part owner and has far money than I have. I think I do it because because the tip jar is on the paying desk so it would look really obvious if I didn't
