To not tip the hairdresser?

laurag33x · 16/01/2019 13:06

Always an awkward thing for me.
I'm at the hairdressers every 7 weeks and it costs £120 for cut and colour.
It's a big hairdressers with about 12 stylists and is a chain salon.
Aibu not to tip?

I always tip, it's customary. £5 for a £45 haircut.

EmeraldShamrock · 16/01/2019 15:06

I always do. I go to a standard salon, a few euro to the stylist and then the apprentice. I trained as a hairdresser and worked the receptions.
In the standard salon most would tip weekly.
In the posher salon you would not get weekly tips but could make lots of big tips at Christmas.

EmeraldShamrock · 16/01/2019 15:09

I never tip the barber, average price is 11euro for a standard child's cut. Very expensive when it is needed so often.

RangeRider · 16/01/2019 15:13

Does she do anything above and beyond the job you're paying her to do? If not don't tip. If they want more money they should be honest and put their prices up.

TheMagicTorch · 16/01/2019 15:15

I only tip them at Christmas.

costacoffeecup · 16/01/2019 15:20

I have literally just spent £120 and didn't tip. In my defence I do most of the time (but just a fiver!) but I'd forgotten to go to the cash machine and it was raining. I don't think everyone does it all the time anymore...

Greyhound22 · 16/01/2019 15:23

I stopped doing it when I changed to my current hairdresser.

I don't think she expects it to be honest. I've worked out in my head what she earns per hour 😂 she doesn't need it.

I tend to take something in for her or give her an extra £10 at Christmas. I don't for my nails or eyebrows either anymore. It's expensive enough.

NorthEndGal · 16/01/2019 15:27

I'm Canadian, so I tip on services and prepped foods (hair, nails, massage, taxi, baggage boys, pizza , meals out, room cleaners, coffee), the idea being if it is something you should be doing for yourself but someone else does it, you tip.
It says thank you, and shows respect. Everyone does it here, pretty much, unless you are deadly broke. If things are that hard up, you aren't ordering out , are you?

BelfortGabbz · 16/01/2019 15:29

I'm just back from the hairdessers and didn't tip. I don't understand how it's expected only to tip certain professions.

Why hairdresser and not florist?
Why waitress and not sales assistant?

Eliza9917 · 16/01/2019 15:47

I always tip my hairdresser, nail tech, cabs, takeaway delivery drivers, in restaurants unless the service is bad. I don't pay the service charge that they add on, I get them to remove that and leave a cash tip instead.

Pachyderm1 · 16/01/2019 16:00

I agree that the difference is when it’s a personal service. I do think it’s up to the individual, but I would always tip restaurant servers, bar staff, taxi drivers, hair stylists, beauticians, anyone like that. I think it’s nice to give a bonus to someone who has provided you with good service. But it’s up to the individual really.

Bellasorellaa · 16/01/2019 16:03

i dont

treaclesoda · 16/01/2019 16:09

I've only ever heard of tipping hairdressers, taxi drivers etc. on here. I thought I was out of step with the rest of the world and was embarrassed so I tried tipping the hairdresser, who seemed insulted and handed it back. I'm not loyal to any particular hairdresser so I tried a few more times. None of them seemed pleased, so I stopped and life is much less stressful now. Grin

TheMightyToosh · 16/01/2019 16:19

My hairdresser is self employed, they all are at my salon, they rent a chair, so I don't tip because I'm already paying her directly, not paying the salon and then giving her extra IYSWIM.

Ncobvs · 16/01/2019 16:23

I thought everyone did this? Just like tipping in restaurants. The people saying they don't get extra in their job, do you not tip in restaurants?

GladAllOver · 16/01/2019 16:26

I never go to the hairdresser. I trim my fringe myself, and DH trims an inch or two off the back when it gets near to the waist. I love it when he brushes my hair, and he will often get a reward later :)

EngagedAgain · 16/01/2019 17:28

BELFORT, you have a very good point and I can only think it's because of the extent of the pampering aspect to it.
As a rule I don't enjoy eating out, but when I do, as I am otherwise always cooking and clearing up the mess afterwards at home, I appreciate being waited on.

Guineapiglet345 · 16/01/2019 17:34

@Ncobvs no, I don’t tip in restaurants. A plate of pasta or a burger doesn’t cost £12 to make, I assume they’ve budgeted for staff wages in the menu prices and I don’t see why I should be subsidising the owner paying business costs from my hard earned money.

PinkGin24 · 16/01/2019 17:37

@Guineapig this is my view exactly!! The cost of a restaurant meal alrrady has overheads factored in - the raw ingredients are FAR FAR FAR cheaper than the price. So why would I oay twice for service... I refuse point blank to tip.

EvaGraceMummy2015 · 16/01/2019 17:41

I'm a hair stylist and always been self employed, usually you pay 50% of anything you earn to the salon owner so sometimes it does feel like you're working for peanuts.. especially if you're not working in a salon which is a chain and charging a lot for your services.. I have never expected my clients to tip me though (but of course it is a lovely gesture) usually stylists in chain salons are employed though and receive a set wage so I wouldn't feel bad at all as they are earning a decent wage as it is 😊

JustanotherCHRISTMASuser01 · 16/01/2019 17:46

my hairdresser charges £45 for colour (often creative colouring too) cut blow and finishes either straight or curly.
she's got the patience of a saint my hair gets awful sometimes with knots as I have bad psoriasis and the amount of times shes reassured me and patiently sorted it out I round it up to £50 and she doesn't like me doing that shes worth so much more

LeSquigh · 16/01/2019 17:54

I can’t believe so many people don’t tip! I always tip both my hairdresser and nail technician a fiver each. They are low paid and are both lovely and I wouldn’t dream of not tipping them. They don’t accept tips by card do on the odd occasion that I don’t have any cash I feel really bad. I don’t earn loads of money but have earned even less in the past and a fiver isn’t going to make as much difference to me as it does to them. It is always gratefully received.

Taxis I round up, sometimes by an extra £1. If I do get a taxi it is generally very local and a short distance so it doesn’t cost a lot anyway. Also tip £1 to takeaway delivery drivers, sometimes a bit more if there is spare change lying around.

Purpleartichoke · 16/01/2019 17:54

I live in the US where tipping the hairdresser is customary. I imagine if I didn’t tip I would have trouble getting repeat appointments as my stylist is in very high demand. That means I add my 20% to the bill even though it brings the total for cut and color to $260.

safetyfreak · 16/01/2019 17:57

I do not tip. We are not in America and I feel embarrassed handing over a few quid. I think they would feel embarrassed too.

Helipad · 16/01/2019 18:00

I used to tip my hairdresser as the cut and blow dry was £37, so it was “easy” to round it up to £40. Then she got promoted to a salon manager and her rate was suddenly £45. I stopped tipping.
