To not tip the hairdresser?

laurag33x · 16/01/2019 13:06

Always an awkward thing for me.
I'm at the hairdressers every 7 weeks and it costs £120 for cut and colour.
It's a big hairdressers with about 12 stylists and is a chain salon.
Aibu not to tip?

I never have. It's expensive enough

homegrownmumma · 16/01/2019 13:39

I believe the reason you tip a lot is America is because the wages are very low as there isn't a minimum wage or atleast it's crazy low ( I could be wrong about this ) , the U.K isn't in the same position so I really don't feel the need to tip at the hairdressers and things like that.
The only time I do tip is if I have outstanding service in a restaurant

waterplease · 16/01/2019 13:40

I don't, £38 for a cut and blow dry is more than enough!

JudasPrudy · 16/01/2019 13:41

I think they set the prices awkwardly so you go oh don't worry about the £3 when you've had a £47 cut and blow dry.

AnnieOH1 · 16/01/2019 13:42

I'm in my thirties, my mom always tipped at the hair salon, despite not really tipping anywhere else. I always assumed it was the done thing and not merely a US import. FWIW I tip more in line with US custom than UK, I'm in no way bashing the US. :)

Huntawaymama · 16/01/2019 13:43

I've never tipped my hairdresser. I pay £25 for a cut and blow dry, it takes an hour, I know she's not getting the whole £25 but I used to work for 7.50ph and I'm sure she's getting that

lidoshuffle · 16/01/2019 13:43

I work on the principle that nobody gives me an extra 10% if I've done a standard report etc, so why should I pay even more on top of the cost.

I do bung her a tenner at Christmas though, but don't even like doing that - it feels like Lady Bountiful tossing coins to the peasants.

PurpleTigerLove · 16/01/2019 13:43

I don’t tip my hairdresser . If the juniors are on a low wage that’s the salon’s fault .

Guineapiglet345 · 16/01/2019 13:45

I’ve only ever heard about tipping hairdressers on here, I can’t believe people actually do this! It’s not tight to pay the agreed price and not tip.

Sooverthemill · 16/01/2019 13:45

I hate tipping! Always worried about offending. At the hairdresser I tip the apprentice who washes my hair a quid. I always believed you didn't tip the salon owner but people do tip stylist. I save up for my hairdo and it's a lot of money I don't think I should have to pay extra. I wish we didn't tip

PurpleTigerLove · 16/01/2019 13:46

Pay on your card . No cash to tip with then .

olympic19 · 16/01/2019 13:49

I don't do 10% in restaurants, not unless the service has been excellent. I don't make a mess either.🙄

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 16/01/2019 13:51

I hate tipping in the UK. It seems very unfair that some people get tips and others don't. A hairdresser isn't doing something more valuable than someone cleaning the streets or working in a shop. Or that you have someone who may be on min wage, tipping a salon owner who has way more money than them.
I think it's time the US introduced proper wages so that staff don't have to rely on tips.
It's fundamentally wrong that the consumer, who is already paying a fair amount for hair cuts and restaurant food, has to top up the wage bill of the owner, who just gets increased profits.

SoupOnMyTableNowSir · 16/01/2019 13:59

Slightly off topic, what do you have done colour wise that costs £120 in a salon every time?

Maybe my view is coloured because my hairdresser comes to my house to do a cut and colour my roots. And no way do I pay anywhere near what you pay.

I give my hairdresser a Christmas bonus but I don't tip her every time. She is here every 6 weeks to cut and colour my hair, plus my two sons have their hair cut too.

Rainbunny · 16/01/2019 14:00

"A good hairdresser is gold dust, and unless they’re head stylist or the salon owner they’re usually paid peanuts!"

I don't know about your hairdresser but my hairsylist in California is an independent contractor. I regularly pay upwards of $200-$230 for my hair cut/colour and while I do tip her (it is the custom in the USA) I can assure you she doesn't make peanuts, in fact she may well make more than me!

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 16/01/2019 14:01

I have always tip my hairdresser a few pound and the junior who washes my hair too. All the other salon clients I have seen at the till have given tips to their stylists too. My current salon is owned by an investor and not any of the stylists who work their so seems to be the done thing.

Also give a small tip to taxis (usually round up to the nearest £1), 10% restaurants if service is good and to a bar person at the pub on the first round if we are staying for a while.

Ethel36 · 16/01/2019 14:05

My mum and I go to the same salon. Mum always tips but I never do. I struggle to afford it without the tip. But at Christmas I do buy a box of chocolates for her. The hairdressers actually own the salon so I like to think that they draw a decent wage?

Wheresthebeach · 16/01/2019 14:09

I thought everyone tipped!

Will stop now...unless I'm delighted.

Currently looking for a new hairdresser...

Sleepsoon7 · 16/01/2019 14:09

I have always tipped at the hairdressers unless I’m not happy ( which is rare). The salon owner who currently cuts my hair earns much more than me but he gives me a discount so the tip covers the discount. An odd way of going about things I guess but hey ho!!!

MaiaRindell · 16/01/2019 14:12

I always tip but my hairdresser is fab and deserves it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/01/2019 14:15

I don't ordinarily tip my hairdresser ( owner ) but at Christmas I put £10 in a card for her and buy a big tub of chocolates for everyone, I do always tip the young girl that washes my hair though a couple of pound. She does the best head massage ever.

Birdsgottafly · 16/01/2019 14:16

It's because it's a personal service, as such.

Some hairdressers are self employed, working out of a salon. Smaller salons used to be cash-in-hand.

So you'd tip to make up their money.

I always used to tip delivery drivers, until my DD worked in a fast food place. The drivers make the most money, but do the least work. They also get first call on any orders that are done wrong etc.

It is unfair who we tip, because Amazon drivers deserve tips, as well. I had no money in the house when my regular one knocked two days before Christmas. I felt bad not being able to give him a Christmas bonus.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 16/01/2019 14:17

I don't tip anyone, ever, unless I'm very, very impressed.

EngagedAgain · 16/01/2019 14:29

Regarding tipping in general I do tip but I don't decide until it's nearly finished whether hair or eating out. Also generally about 10%, which is about £2 where I eat or price of cut.
That's if I'm happy if not £1!

The way I see it is if people tip and pay what they can afford it's win win all round. Only once have I worked a job and got tips, which back then made as much as the wage (a waiting job).
I have found waiting staff are more motivated by it than hairdressers. On various occasions I've tipped people for doing odd jobs if they are helpful.

Again not much as I cannot afford too much, but some jobs aren't well paid and it brightens someones day up a little, even if they only buy lunch or a little treat of some sort.

Delatron · 16/01/2019 14:29

I don’t tip hairdressers. My hair costs £130
which is bloody expensive so they are not getting another £10!
