So basically I'm not well and can't seem to get a doctor's app for 2 weeks! I have the worse cough and cold ever, I feel all chesty and keep coughing phlegm up. This morning I have been literally heaving trying to rid my chest of this. Common cold symptoms blocked nose headache just feeling under weather. I'm using lemsip vapour rub and covonia mucus cough syrup. Really want to get this phlegm off my chest, I know it's gross lol. Any advice? Thankyou x

Steam steam and steam!

PennyWishes1 · 16/01/2019 09:00

A long hot shower. It's not nice but the steam really helps to bring it up. Exputex very good too. You can get it over the counter.

Honey, lemon and glycerine drink. U can buy glycerine from chemist only use abt 5ml in mug with fairly warm (not boiling water) add spoonful of honey and squirt of lemon juice.

Stardustinmyeyes · 16/01/2019 09:01

I'll second honey and lemon and I add freshly grated ginger, yes it must be hot. Get some fresh thyme cut the leaves and put them in a mug with boiling water, when it's cooler drink the water, it's disgusting but it works.
I also smother my chest and neck with Vick
I've had the same for about 2 months and I thought it would never go, it does but it's vile

Also eat chicken soup if you are not vegetarian of course.

Google chest physiotherapy, there are useful You Tube vids to follow too. Active cycle of breathing technique is pretty straightforward and less effort than constant hard coughing. Don't forget to do the relaxed breathing in between so you don't get dizzy

Lots of hot drinks, loosens the phlegm a bit. Or at least makes it more comfortable to cough up. Do make sure that it really is chesty, and not just "post nasal drip", where snot trails down your throat and irritates it, so you are coughing up snot/mucus almost continuously. That's helped by honey to soothe, but would be made worse by an expectorant cough mixture like the one you're taking. If you are thinking of popping to Tesco, you can take reassurance from the fact that you're over the worst, and it'll all get better from here - there really is an end in sight!

Drink lots and lots of water - it will think the mucus and make it easier to clear.

Brazenhussy0 · 16/01/2019 12:16

Bowl or bucket filled with boiling water.
Couple drops of Olbas Oil (i.e. eucalyptus oil).
Hang head over bowl and cover both head and bowl with a towel to trap the steam in.
Breathe in deeply until water cools and steam dissipates.

Works everytime. And has the added bonus of leaving your skin feeling lovely and clean Smile

Reduce the amount of dairy you consume. It does help.

Standstilling · 16/01/2019 12:22

All of the above plus watch something that really makes you laugh. That’ll clear your tubes. You’ve Been Framed always does it for me.

TheSandgroper · 16/01/2019 12:49

Give up gluten and dairy.

Honey, lemon, fresh ginger. Lots of ginger.

Steam.

Acupressure points of thumbs up and push just in front of the armpit. If you find yourself bouncing off the ceiling with the pain, you have hit the spot.

Have you someone with you who can bang your back with cupped hands?

Pineapple juice is apparently better than lemon. A very old school doctor told me this and it has worked for me. Got to be worth a try. Feel better soon!
