To think that with someone else leading the Labour Party things might look very different

Corbyn is a Brexiteer firstly - maybe for different reasons to the Rees-Mogg crew, but a Brexiteer none the less. He may pay lip service to the remain side of things at times, but it is forced.

Over and above this, his position has been and is unendingly wishy-washy. I get that he has a difficult job marrying the different views amongst Labour voters, but come on, stop prevaricating.

My vote for Labour Party leader goes to Keir Starmer or David

Lammy.

I want David Milliband back. I honestly think Britain would be a different place today if he'd win the leadership election instead of his brother.

But yes, we've been shafted on both sides. As someone else said on another thread: we've got a Remainer in charge of Brexit and a Leaver leading the opposition. That was never going to end well.

pixilatedpenguin · 16/01/2019 08:48

I agree so basically all this mess is Ed Millibands fault - if he had stood aside for his brother everything would be completely different

walkingtheplank · 16/01/2019 08:52

I'm no Ed Milliband fan but I don't think we can lay this at his door. David Milliband had every opportunitu to win the Labour leadership but he bottled it. He could have resigned from Cabinet on numerous occasions and challenged Gordon Brown for the leadership - and he would have won. He chose not to do this and then was shocked when his little brother woo-ed the unions and won the post election leadership vote. As such, David is not the answer, and is obviously too far to the right of the party to win now anyway. The Labour party has swung too far to the left for that.

Caselgarcia · 16/01/2019 08:56

I agree David Miliband would have been the best leader, but that moment has gone. As PP has said the party has swing too far left.

MorningRichie · 16/01/2019 09:01

Just seen this and it puts everything into words.

To think that with someone else leading the Labour Party things might look very different
NameChangeNugget · 16/01/2019 09:02

David Lammy.... Confused

Labour should be at least 15 points ahead in the polls at the moment. David Milliband would be running absolute rings around Theresa May at the moment.

MrsTommyBanks · 16/01/2019 09:05

Was discussing this yesterday with a friend. I'd be so happy to see David Milliband leading Labour.

veggiepigsinpastryblankets · 16/01/2019 09:08

I firmly believe that if Yvette Cooper had won in 2015 we wouldn't be going through any of this shit now. We'd be staying in the EU and she'd be busy wiping the floor with David Cameron while moving inexorably towards a Labour government in 2020. Sigh.

why100000 · 16/01/2019 09:16

MorningRichie that’s great. Would be funny if it weren’t so tragic.

The cheek of Corbyn to table a no confidence vote when half of his party don't want him at the helm. What a total shambles

SarahSissions · 16/01/2019 09:20

Hilary Benn. Articulate enough to draw over disenchanted Tory supporters, who would put up with a Labour government for a term at least to finalise a Brexit deal.

SovietKitsch · 16/01/2019 09:21
megletthesecond · 16/01/2019 09:24

Yanbu.
Cooper or Lammy would do a good job.

SweetSummerchild · 16/01/2019 09:25

Corbyn has even less chance of securing a Brexit deal that the Commons would vote in favour of than May and he knows it.

It’s a mess.

ShatnersWig · 16/01/2019 09:26

Labour is a party whose leader doesn't wish to carry out the overwhelming desire of its party members.

I also agree Labour chose the wrong Milliband.

JasperKarat · 16/01/2019 09:26

It feels like a choose your own adventure, but we can't flick back pages to see what would've happened if the other brother was chosen. I agree with PP Corbyn calling no confidence in anyone is laughable.
Also interesting that the left wing Brexiteers and their reasons are never discussed (all Brexiteers are right wing racists fits the narrative) but there are plenty of others who still hold the same views as Corbin's actual feelings about the EU.

WhirlwindHugs · 16/01/2019 09:31

I actually think that Ed would be a decent middle ground between the different sides of the party at the moment, it's a shame he wasn't given a chance.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/01/2019 09:32

Corbyn is horrendous but the Labour party has bigger issues than just leadership- I cant see how they could ever form an opinion on Brexit that would appeal to their core voters.

Tentomidnight · 16/01/2019 09:34

Kier Starmer as leader would make Labour credible again.

Lizzie48 · 16/01/2019 09:34

It was never going to be possible for May to gain a deal from the EU and win over her opponents in the Tory party. The party has always been hopelessly divided over the issue of the EU, and there are so many Brexiteers who don't care what damage is caused to this country what hardship the British people have to go through, as long as we leave the EU. (Because it won't affect them, they have their offshore bank accounts.)

ShatnersWig · 16/01/2019 09:35

it's a shame he wasn't given a chance

What? He was leader of the Opposition/Labour for almost five years and Labour lost the general election in 2015. Not given a chance???? Really @WhirlwindHugs

Lizzie48 · 16/01/2019 09:37

It's a shame that Labour aren't a credible alternative, it really is. If they had a half decent leader (David Milliband/Yvette Cooper) they would wipe the floor with the Tories.

Deadbudgie · 16/01/2019 09:39

Whether you’re a Brexiteer or remainer one thing probably everyone can agree on is the tories have fucked thisup.

In theory everyone should be screaming for may to go and there be a general election.

But it looks 99% certain the govt will win the confidence of the House.

No one (except momentum) and some far left supporters want Corbyn to lead the country. David Milliband, according to some circles might be making a reappearance on the uk political scene. We need politics drawing into the middle again.

A general election would lead to the suspension on parliament and I highly suspect we would end up with a hung parliament with some extreme parties being brought into a coilition.

At this stage I think everything needs to be thrown at a no deal Brexit now. The EU have made it clear they will not shift. Parliament will not accept the deal the EU says is it’s only deal.

It seems the EU are angling to get us to stay.

We have two months left. Either the EU backs down and puts a longstop date re the backstop in the currently negotiated agreement (which I think will be enough to get it through parliament) or we decide to keep the £39bn and plough that into mitigating the short term effects of a no deal Brexit.

SweetSummerchild · 16/01/2019 09:41

Lizzie48 exactly the same could be said about Labour supporters. There were many voters who voted Leave without giving a shit about the economy etc as long as freedom of movement stopped. On the other hand, there are the staunch Remainers for whom anything other than Remain is totally unacceptable.

Both party leaders have the challenge of trying to find a solution that works without pissing off a large proportion of their voters and thus driving them towards other parties (UKIP or Lib Dem’s). Both party leaders are doomed to failure.
