Does anyone have Axolotl’s?

Are they quite high maintenance? Or are they no more trouble than maintaining a fish tank?

I love them and really want to get some!
What size sort of tank do you keep them in? Can they be kept in pairs?

Please tell me your axolotl stories!

I don’t have them but I did want them
a few years back. They’re adorable !
Think they’re more like looking after a turtle than fish ?

It would be like having a real life pokemon!

Yes I had some a few years ago! They can be high maintenance in that I had to maintain the water PH levels to the right level, which usually involved testing once a week. They can poop quite a bit which can make the water more acidic. You also need to make sure your filter doesn't cause too much output and current which can stress the axolotls.

The axolotls themselves were really easy to look after. I generally fed them earthworms, which you can keep in a tub of compost. I used to use tweezers and feed them to the axolotls! You can give frozen blocks of bloodworms but they're not as nutritious.

You do need a large tank, but think length rather than height, which is not always easy to find. I had a golden one and albino one 😊 If they don't have enough room they will end up eating each other. Sometimes my two were missing the odd leg but they grew back!

I have considered getting another one but would need to space for the tank. They're really cool creatures and very different!

Just to add I had turtles and fish and I wouldn't say they were as much work as turtles, who need heat lamps, graduated gravel floor so they can climb out and bask under the lamp and I remember my turtle being filthy and needing to be cleaned out every day! I only replaced part of the water in the axolotls' tank once a week and would use a pipette to take out the droppings every day.

Thankyou! I think I’m going to go and look at some tomorrow Grin

They’re so beautiful to watch. And old friend used to have some and I could sit and watch them for hours.
