To think hairdressers have ruined my hair? Will include pic

I started today with really dark brown hair.
I went to salon and asked for caramel balayage.
This is how I've ended up..
It's awful isn't it?

It just isn't what I wanted.

For goodness sake it’s absolutely definitely not ‘ruined’! It’s lifted well for balayage as a first application on dark hair. Open air balayage is not recommended for taking dark hair to light as it’s development potential is limited due to not having the insulating properties of foil to help. Going from light to dark is a process, it takes time and in order to keep the integrity of your hair it cannot be lifted 5/6 shades in one go and must be done slowly over a couple of appointments. However this should’ve been explained to you.

The colourist should have discussed your expectations and it's always helpful to show a picture. that way the colourist will remind you that you need to taken into account your eye colour and skin tone. I had a disappointing colour once but then found a hairdresser wo was really good about talking throught the reality of the outcome before the colour was applied.

Were you hoping it would be richer/darker?

PotteringAlong · 15/01/2019 19:43

Looks fine to me

SugarfreeMe · 15/01/2019 19:43

If it’s not what you wanted then speak with the hairdresser. It probably would take a few treatments to get the effect you want, but it should have been explained to you.

BlimeyCalmDown · 15/01/2019 19:45

Oh god it wasn't RUSH was it? I've had a nightmare with them. I had already had balayage and was asking for it it to be changed to one colour (dark auburn) left with luminous purple.... I then got sent to another branch to get it fixed, 2 appointments later it looks similar to yours but much worse i.e some bleachy (brassy) bits showing through, with copper/pinkish bits, it's awful. I got the next appointment brought forward to this week as it looks that bad (last toner just not sticking). Got an email from the customer service saying this is the last one the are paying for, I'm furious as it's not my fault they f**ked up! I paid a fortune originally and got something totally different/luminous. I rue the day I ever walked in there. Getting close to just putting a home dye on top and being done with it....

BlimeyCalmDown · 15/01/2019 19:45

Plus they gave me a fringe when I said I wanted the front to reach my jaw line, going to take ages to grow that out.

Pachyderm1 · 15/01/2019 19:47

Its not awful! Just a little bit brassy - you need a good purple shampoo. Did they put a toner on it? If not might be worth booking one in.

flumpybear · 15/01/2019 19:47

Hhhmmm doesn't look much like the picture! Do they do balayage or did they just guess how to do it?

hairisruined · 15/01/2019 19:48

They meant to be the leading salon for balayage.

It was Sherlock's ..it's a chain salon I think.

It looks fine, but it’s nothing special. I can’t see any of the ombré look one might expect with high-end balayage.

What does the top look like? Maybe once it grows out a bit you might get more of a contrast.

Ethel36 · 15/01/2019 20:03

Looks nice to me.

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 15/01/2019 20:04

It's a great lift from brown in one go... although I'd expect it to look smoother from the salon, but it's a nice colour with your skin. Maybe you were actually after an ombre where it's more distinct with the dark to light? Balayage is just a faffy word for highlighting in my experience!

IBlameJulieBindel · 15/01/2019 20:05

Sorry you don't like it. How about taking some pics from the internet in to show what you feel it looks like (I know that sounds weird as you can show them your hair, but I mean it'll help them see what you think you're seeing, and it's easier to do that when you look at someone else) and also what you had meant. I tried to explain that (when I got my braces off) that I felt my front teeth were tilted weirdly. They couldn't see what I meant, so I got a pic showing what I felt like but it was more exaggerated - then they got what I meant, even though we all agreed my tilt was less extreme. Not sure if this makes any sense! Anyway, good luck. Rotten when it feels disappointing. I'm sure it'll get fixed, even if it takes a couple of goes xx

CowJumping · 15/01/2019 20:08

Dark hair to blonde? Can't be done in one go (and even if done well, it can look tacky). Just revel in your own colour.

user1466690252 · 15/01/2019 20:12

The best shampoo for taking out brassy-ness is fanola. It is wonderful magical stuff get some of amazon and don’t worry. It looks fine just needs toning a bit at home

BlueJava · 15/01/2019 20:16

From what I can see in the partial pic I like it!

User758172 · 15/01/2019 20:18

Looks brassy. You need a purple shampoo. But it was ambitious to think you could do that to dark brown hair. Never a good idea.

TinTinBanana · 15/01/2019 20:22

The same thing happened to me. I took a photo showing same colours you wanted. The salon told me they could do it. My hair looked nothing like it. I coloured it back to brown myself.

happyasasandboy · 16/01/2019 04:41

It looks completely different to the picture you took in; much much lighter. If you were dark brown to start with (as dark as the predominant colour on the inspiration picture?) then they've surely gone far far too light in far to many places?

I'd definitely go back and ask them to take it back down to brown in most places, ideally toning down the brassiness at the same time (which might not be possible, I don't know). It will require more upkeep though, because the dark brown will fade where it's over the now-bleached hair, whereas your original dark brown would be deeper and not fade.

I wouldn't use them again; or is a long way from what you asked for.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 05:06

Looks fabulous to me?
