Sorry don’t know how to do a clicky link. I admire vegans but don’t have the willpower myself to give up cheese and fish and realistically never will. Witnessing this kind of protest would irritate me though, especially if I was trying to get on with my shopping. What do you think, admirable or annoying?

I'd throw a wet bleeding steak in their face

User758172 · 14/01/2019 18:25

I’ve been vegan all my life. My parents decided that for me when I was born. I’ve never eaten meat or dairy. But this kind of stunt makes me so cross. I’d never dream of ramming my beliefs down someone else’s throat. Even my DH eats meat, I’ve never passed comment - what goes into his mouth is his business.

kaitlinktm · 14/01/2019 18:26

I was so irritated when I read that article I had to have a burger (with cheese). Grin

HildaZelda · 14/01/2019 18:28

Attention seeking twats.

irunlikeahipoo · 14/01/2019 18:38

A friend is a vegan and very militant and in your face about it . Goes on protest and marches and gets quite nasty if you don’t agree with her point of view
However she didn’t have much to say when I asked her why she took the prescribed tablets and medicine that had been tested on animals in probably pretty horrific conditions and I guess it’s ok to take something that’s hurts a animal as long as your health is ok
It’s the only time I’ve seen her silent for a few mins

She also had a cat and dog but they are rescue ones not bought so in her head that’s ok

pigsknickers · 14/01/2019 18:41

Did anyone read to the end of that article, with the casual mention of Dave who was handcuffed to a dwarf dressed as an Oompa Loompa? Wtf was that all about (slight digression)

AnyOldPrion · 14/01/2019 18:49

Humans have teeth more like herbivores than anything 🙄

This is just plain wrong. Herbivores often have teeth that continue to grow throughout their lives. Ruminants don’t even have incisors at the top. Go check in a cow’s mouth. Their teeth look nothing like yours.

It's quite something when the welfare of animals is far more important than the welfare of humans.
Why don't they protest about homeless people?

How the fuck is the "rights" of animals more of an issue than people literally sleeping on the streets in a doorway or park bench etc. Self righteous arseholes.

abbsisspartacus · 14/01/2019 18:59

Anyone else remember the campaign that was inspired by watership down? "You've seen the film read the book now eat the cast?"

Guineapiglovers · 14/01/2019 19:08

As a vegan, I find these twats fucking embarrassing. They picked on a very small independent store (social enterprise).

Btw, vegans should not have pets.

ShortandSweet96 · 14/01/2019 19:11

If a vegan had blocked my path in order to stop me debuting what I WANT. I would have grabbed the sloppiest biggest steak I could have, opened it up and slapped the fuck out of them.

I have nothing against vegans as such, but when they interfere with my life I'll retaliate.

TheCrowFromBelow · 14/01/2019 19:12

pigs yes! it was the matter of fact way they just casually dropped that additional detail in that was truky brilliant.
I’m guessing stag do.

TheCrowFromBelow · 14/01/2019 19:12

*truly

JamPasty · 14/01/2019 19:13

I'm curious. I assume hardcore vegans refuse to use any medicines or benefit from any medical advances due to the animals involved?

crosstalk · 14/01/2019 19:13

I don't agree with their protest in a shop that's trying to do its best. However, some animal welfare and health legislation has ironically made life more difficult for animals - eg having vets to superintend slaughter means the small slaughter houses have gone under and animals tend to travel hundreds of miles to slaughter, and they're slaughtered in their thousands and panic. I gave up meat after following pigs on a hot day going to slaughter in a traffic jam. I am aware of the milk cruelty but luckily live in a county with calfatfoot policies. Wending your way round veg/vegan is difficult when soya etc comes from breaking down forests to grow it.

Beerflavourednipples · 14/01/2019 19:14

Has someone on this thread really compared slaves to animals? How offensive is that!

Beerflavourednipples · 14/01/2019 19:16

I don't get this either. Presumably vegans will use medicines that contain animal products or have been tested on animals/allow their children to be given those medicines.

So they don't actually see animals as on a par with humans when it comes down to it?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/01/2019 19:16

Aren’t vaccinations non vegan, or did I imagine they had something to do with eggs?

gimmeadoughnut123 · 14/01/2019 19:17

This.

linkinperk · 14/01/2019 19:19

I'm a vegan and I and all then numerous vegans I know do not behave like this.

There will be twats in every corner of society, please don't think all vegans are like this.

Guineapiglovers · 14/01/2019 19:21

You can’t get medicine in the uk that has not been tested on animals.

dangermouseisace · 14/01/2019 19:23

I’m vegan (22 years now) and things like that give us a bad name. I don’t think it actually works in terms of converting people to veganism either. Surely if people are going to eat meat (which they will) it’s better they have meat that has been reared with better welfare standards/is more expensive and hope that people eat less of it. Veganism for everyone isn’t an attainable goal- raising welfare standards and encouraging reduced consumption is. Scaring people out of shops like this means people will just go and buy lower welfare meat out of a supermarket.

thecatneuterer · 14/01/2019 19:28

Now that's just a silly argument, and one that was thrown a me a few times when I was collecting money for an animal shelter. By that logic we should all agree on what 'the most important cause' is, and only give money to and support that one thing. In the real world people are moved by many different things and if they are going to make an effort to support a cause or to give money to a cause, then of course it should be a cause that most pulls their heartstrings. If someone else thinks something else is more important, then they should support that cause and do something about it themselves and not berate someone for supporting something different.

I will always support animal charities above human ones. Other people will do the opposite, for some it will be environmental concerns or whatever. No one should be condemned for supporting a cause (and I'm not talking about these protesters here - the means they are using probably should be condemned - but not the desire to protect animals), we should all be grateful to anyone who is prepared to put themselves out in terms of time, energy or money, to make a positive difference to anything and not criticise them because it doesn't happen to be the thing we would choose.

Definition of veganism is to reduce animal exploitation as far as is reasonable and practical. That means cutting animal products from your diet (the biggest thing you can do) not buying new leather/wool/fur etc (next biggest thing), not exploiting animals by using them for sport for example and eliminating animal products from your toiletries and cleaning products. If you do all of this you are 99 % vegan. 100% is not achievable for anyone, but just because that 1% is unachievable doesnt mean its not worth putting the other 99% into practice. Its about intention not perfection.

Obviously there are unavoidable animal products in some things (£5 notes for example) and given an alternative many vegans do choose a cruelty free medicine but with faced with that choice, I would take the medicine.

Extremists dont do any movement justice, regardless of their philosophy.

JamPasty · 14/01/2019 19:31

You can't get medicine hardly anywhere in the world that's not been tested on animals. And realistically, you'd be daft to take any that hadn't been. Also, the UK animal welfare laws when it comes to medical research are some of the strictest in the world .
