Fiat 500 boot space.

Currently drive a Ford Fiesta but I’m thinking about changing to a Fiat 500. Just wondering if you can fit an adult fold up wheelchair in the boot. It fits easily in the Fiesta if I take the parcel shelf out. It’s not a regular thing but if I take my DM shopping she needs her wheelchair. DH has an estate car so I don’t need a big car but if I can’t fit moms wheelchair in I’m a bit stuck. I’m not insured to drive DH’s car so he couldn’t take mine and leave his. Really love the little Fiat 500’s so be a bit gutted if it won’t fit in.

Not particularly helpful but I could fit an adult wheelchair in the "boot" (and I am using that term very generously) of my old Citroen C1, which has much less space than the fist 500 so I think you'd be fine. Worst case scenario it would definitely fit on the back seats.

sackrifice · 14/01/2019 09:16

The seats go down quite easily, i used to have one and my job was teaching gardening. I got ten sacks of manure in there once with the seats down.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 14/01/2019 09:17

Probably not I’m afraid. I suppose models might vary but the parcel shelf is tiny on mine and the actual blood space is small. You might manage to fit a folded wheelchair in the back on the back seat, but it would be awkward getting it in and out and you’d have to find a way of securing it in.

Alfiesmom74 · 14/01/2019 09:25

Just noticed that the car I’m interested in has split back seats. When I take my mom shopping my DD usually tags along. If I have one seat down in the back is it possible to fit it in that way do you think?

I don't think so, can't fit a small pram in my sister in laws folded down.

BadgerSandwich · 14/01/2019 09:30

I have an abarth which I think is the same floor plan as a 500 - I'd say you could probably fit one in, as they are deceptively wide, but also quite deep. I'm not sure if you'd even need to put a seat down.

Can you not borrow the wheelchair and take it car shopping with you so that you can check?

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 14/01/2019 09:30

Go to a fiat dealership and take the wheelchair with you, they'll be happy to help. I did that when I was looking for a car. Most the dealerships were very helpful and it helped assess ease of access as well as if it actually fits, you'll also get a coffee

ShatnersWig · 14/01/2019 09:35

@Divgirl2 Did you have to fold the rear seats down though? The old style C1 has a boot capacity of 139 litres (new one has 196 which beats the Fiat 500 at 185) and there's no way I could get a wheelchair in without folding the seats.

Divgirl2 · 14/01/2019 09:50

Didn't have to fold the seats down, no. The seat folded quite narrow and then it stood up behind the back seats. Getting 4 adults and a wheelchair in that car was my proudest achievement.

Puggles123 · 14/01/2019 09:55

I used to have a fiat 500 and loved it, but the boot is pretty small; I couldn’t even fit a weekly shop in it! I agree with other posters who have said to take it to a fiat dealer and take the wheelchair to see if it will fit.

friskybivalves · 14/01/2019 09:57

Also does the classic Fiat 500 not have only two doors? Nightmare of shoving and twisting awaits.

ShatnersWig · 14/01/2019 09:58

@Divgirl2 Ah, OK, you had to remove the parcel shelf then.

OP This is a very useful site.... www.ridc.org.uk/2780

Aprilshowerswontbelong · 14/01/2019 09:59

Dd picked me and newborn ds up from hospital in her Fiat 500. Had to post the seat in via the boot!!
*not while ds was in it (coughs)!!
Your car will be wrecked keep ramming a wheel chair in it imo.

Puggles123 · 14/01/2019 10:04

Also the parcel shelf wasn’t really worthwhile, it was so narrow it makes little difference taking it out- think of the shape of the back (more or less flat).

Chewinggumwalk · 14/01/2019 10:09

This might be helpful, OP - it gives some ideas and gives the boot size of a Fiat 500. I think you’d need to go to a dealer and check, but this might be useful for you in the meantime:

A friend gets his golf clubs in his 500 by putting down the back seat, if that helps to visualise the length.

Neverender · 14/01/2019 10:11

I'd take it along to a dealer and ask them if you can check - they won't mind and it's the only way you'll know for sure.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 14/01/2019 10:14

The back seat are quite far back in the vehicle which means the parcel shelf is really narrow...maybe only 6 inches, if that, so there is barely any room between the back of the seats and the rearscreen

The space is pretty much triangular I suppose, but I used to be able to get loads in it.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 14/01/2019 10:22

You probably could with a seat folded down, but that would be it, you'd never get anything else in there also so a bit pointless if you're going shopping.

Fiat do larger cars which may offer a better boot option but the 500 is only really ideal for those without things like prams and wheelchairs.

AlanThePig · 14/01/2019 10:25

Depending on the model the 500 has 50/50 split seats. You'll fit a wheelchair in easily with the seats down, but doubtful with one down and not at all with both up.

Never had an issue fitting anything in mine tbh, shopping, tip runs etc

Alarae · 14/01/2019 10:42

I wouldn't have thought you would get one in my boot with the back seats up. The curve of the boot would hit the top of the wheelchair and stop it from closing.

Depending on how wide the wheelchair is, you might get away with splitting the back seats and laying the wheelchair down with the wheels in the boot.

My Fiat 500 is a pain to fit anything that has a rigid largish shape in. I never would describe it as deceptively spacious either. It's a tiny boot for a tiny car.

penelopepig · 14/01/2019 10:42

I've had both a Fiat 500 and a Fiesta.
As adorable as the Fiat 500 is, it was the most expensive mistake I ever made. Nothing ever fits in the boot and it always becomes a nightmare as soon as you need to give multiple people a lift or have a passenger plus a load of shopping etc. The Fiesta is considerably larger and better designed.

maybabymumma · 27/01/2019 17:51

I have a fiat 500 15 plate. My dads fold up wheelchair does not fit in the back :(. You could always try making sure you buy a model new enough to lay the seats flat but obviously it wouldn't be awfully secure. Hope you can find a solution!
