Toilet brush or no toilet brush?!

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2019 09:05

people seem to use them to brush away skids then put them back in holder with poo and loo roll all over them

Everyone I know has a loo brush and not a single one of them does this.

What kind of people do you hang out with? Blush

Rebah · 14/01/2019 09:13

Not sure but I have never seen a used loo brush that doesn’t have either poo or tissue shreds on it. I think most people hold it under the flush then consider it clean?

PatchworkGirl · 14/01/2019 09:15

I get a lot of limescale and someone suggested those denture cleaning tablets to shift a hard build up. Empty the bowl as much as possible - pop one in - add hot water and leave it. After trying everything else it's like a miracle! But I'm scummy and don't bleach/scrub every 8 seconds.

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2019 09:19

Well that's just disgusting.

However loo brushes are very easy to clean. It's not the loo brushes fault that your acquaintances are lazy mingers.

Eatmycheese · 14/01/2019 09:21

Toilet brushes are totally disgusting.
Grim.

I find little and often cleaning works best for the toilet and when needed or twice a week I use those disposable scrubbing things preloaded with cleaner.

Mind you quite fancy one of these

Although they do look like an alessi inspired sex toy

areyoubeingserviced · 14/01/2019 09:25

Toilet brushes are totally minging.
I put bleach or toilet cleaner down the toilet, leave for ten minutes and then use a scouring sponge to clean the toilet. I then dispose of said scouring sponge
I spray antibacterial spray on the seating area and wipe with toilet paper

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2019 09:41

This is super wasteful.

I think (hope) we're going to become much less tolerant of this kind of unnecessary waste.

Xanthia · 14/01/2019 09:42

A toilet brush. Then you wash the toilet brush. Hmm

Ifangyow · 14/01/2019 09:47

Dynamite.
Just blow it up. You know it makes sense.

Granted you might not have much of a house left, but at least you won't have to worry about cleaning that either. 😁

user1471590586 · 14/01/2019 09:51

Gave up using a brush a while ago but might have to do something about the limescale. In terms of general cleaning a good squirt of domestic sorts it. Has to be Domestos, not other supermarket own brands etc, they just don't shift the stains.

adultchildalcoholicparents · 14/01/2019 09:52

Hard water makes for grubbier surfaces (it's own deposits of scale make surfaces rougher and they hold stains more). If people have water tanks rather than tankless mains water systems then there are limescale preventers that are meant to be positioned near to the water inlet and are good at reducing the overall limescale.

How do people clean the outside/seat/lid/ceramic of the toilet?

I seem to be very good at smearing the dust around rather than wiping it off! Do you use lots of cloths? Rinse the cloth lots between each wipe? Dry with loo roll?

treaclesoda · 14/01/2019 09:58

I'd guess the mumsnet way is to only have a toilet for show. Just don't allow people to use it.

I refuse to socialise or live with anyone who has a functioning bladder or bowel, it's just such bad manners. Wink

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2019 10:02

I think this might be true.

I'm still reeling from the thread where a poster thought it preferable for tradesmen to shit in a bucket in their van than ask to use a client's loo Hmm

MrsJayy · 14/01/2019 10:27

Ahh show toilet that is where I am going wrong

BlackInk · 14/01/2019 10:29

I'm pretty weird about germs, but am also a bit of an eco-botherer... awkward combination.

Those of you who don't have a toilet brush - do you stick you hand down the loo and scrub with a cloth/scourer of some sort? Do you throw the cloth away after? Do you wear rubber gloves? Do you throw them away after?

If you're throwing away gloves and scourers every time you clean the loo that's shamefully wasteful. If you're washing and re-using then I can't see how it's any better than using a toilet brush.

I use a spray and wads of toilet paper to wipe the outside of the loo and the seat etc. Then flush the paper. Visible skids are removed with the brush as and when. Thorough clean down the loo with brush and spray once a week. I then rinse/soak the brush and pot with boiling water and some spray.

Bleach comes out only if someone in the house has a tummy bug.

Basically, I'm ok with toilet brushes but am not at all ok with rubber gloves. They creep me out. People use them to do gross jobs then leave them lying around before putting them back on and touching things. They're pretty much impossible to wash properly - so much easier just to wash your hands surely?

Pachyderm1 · 14/01/2019 10:31

I use a brush, which by MN standards mean I essentially live in a midden. I just bleach it after and replace every couple of months. Nobody has died yet.

lynnepot · 14/01/2019 10:36

What does this mn show toilet entail then? A permanent presence of hinch inspired pine toilet cleaner down it with obligatory foam stuff? A hotel-esque ribbon across the seat saying it's been sanitised for your protection? The loo roll folded into a decorative flower? Maybe one of those gimmicky signs on the wall saying something on the lines of stating the toilet rules Grin

SuziQ10 · 14/01/2019 10:36

No brush here.
Haven't had one since our new modern bathroom was put in 18months ago. Don't want a brush they look horrible in the bathroom.

Our toilet is spotless. Pop some bleach in every couple of days (more if there's a messy poop). If any marks, wipe immediately with tissue if above the water or if in the water the bleach will get rid.

Hoppinggreen · 14/01/2019 10:38

Are you supposed to clean them?

MrsJayy · 14/01/2019 10:39

lynnepot show toilet sounds lovely I kinda want one !

treaclesoda · 14/01/2019 10:40

lynne

Maybe something like :

In this house we say please and thank you
In this house we dance in the rain
In this house we only use the toilet if we live here, and even then only when everyone else is out of the house
Live Laugh Love

I might start an Etsy shop...

Hoppinggreen · 14/01/2019 10:40

Actually I suggested those Toilet duck disposable toilet brushes Nd was good it was basically beating polar bears to death with endangered birds while simultaneously burning down a rainforest.

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 14/01/2019 10:44

Grim but had to compromise with toilet brush as my OH frequently left the toilet in a mess

I can’t stand normal brushes as unsightly and like a germ factory IMO so got the toilet duck disposable one. Other than that just bleach as required although sometimes hard to get hold of bleach as it’s not sold in most stores here (Sweden)

lynnepot · 14/01/2019 10:50

treacle maybe a mn inspired gimmicky sign with some of mn most common themes of judgypants philosophy? Grin
