Got a cheque from a relative for Christmas and have accidentally lost it Blush. Feel so stupid!!

What should I do, apart from contacting the relative who wrote the cheque?

I wouldn't. Unless it was for an enormous amount.

Seniorcitizen1 · 12/01/2019 22:17

Nothing - the relative will contact the bank and cancel the cheque

ChrisjenAvasarala · 12/01/2019 22:19

They'll notice it hasn't been cashed, and I think I'd actually.ne annoyed if you didn't tell me because I'd be checking to make sure the money went out.

Why are people saying don't tell them and do nothing? They need to know so they can cancel it and either give you a new one or keep the cash themselves.

Just tell them it got lost amongst the Xmas rubbish and say they should cancel it.

FoxtrotGolf · 12/01/2019 22:21

So should I just leave it? I realised I put it in the bin by mistake whilst sorting through some papers earlier Blush

My worry is that someone else could cash it in.

Wouldn’t the relative notice that I hadn’t cashed in the cheque?

The irony is, that when I lost it, I’d just finished writing and posting them a thank-you card for it Blush

Exactly - I feel the same as you ChrisjenAvarasala

It's a relative, not a strange person you don't know. Just let them know.

Mumsent seems to be a very "do nothing and don't talk about it" place. It's very odd.

MongerTruffle · 12/01/2019 22:24

Ask them to cancel the cheque and send you a new one.

Purplepinkpurple · 12/01/2019 23:32

You havnt accidentally posted the cheque back to them have you ?

FoxtrotGolf · 13/01/2019 12:35

Just phoned the relative - all is well!

Thanks, everyone!

Tell them; I would want to know!

No one else would be able to cash it as it’s in your name
