Are there any households who don't have a pile of odd socks? Even after I've done all the washing, everything is clean and folded and ready to put away, I'm always left with a load of mystery odd socks. Help me out of this misery please. Tell me your sock life hacks. I'm tempted to just throw all of them away.

GreenTulips · 12/01/2019 12:41

I think the washing machine eats them

Pissedoffdotcom · 12/01/2019 12:42

Get everybody used to wearing odd socks! DD loves odd socks & will unpair hers 🙈

DP only has black socks. Easy peasy

WooYa · 12/01/2019 12:42

Buy little washing net bags and put the socks in the bags together. The washing can't open zips so can't eat them Grin

Itstartedinbarcelona · 12/01/2019 12:42

We have a rule that everyone has one type of sock each. That way they always pair up!

Gatehouse77 · 12/01/2019 12:44

Very, very rarely do I have odd socks and it’s usually because I’ve dropped one on the way 🙄
I do, however, hang them out in pairs so it’s easily spotted if there’s an odd one which I’ll look for at that point - often missed from the washing machine.

dudsville · 12/01/2019 12:44

We don't have a problem with socks. I don't know how we manage to just always have our socks but we do.

DramaAlpaca · 12/01/2019 12:46

I had a permanent basket of odd socks I could never pair up, it used to drive me nuts.

When DS1 & DS2 moved out I sent the odd socks off with them because they were all theirs anyway. It was very satisfying & I no longer have an odd sock basket. Result.

I appreciate that's not a solution if you have DC still at home, but it's something to look forward to Grin

MitziK · 12/01/2019 12:48

Give up and wear odd socks. Works every time - I'm never without a pair that way.

Oh, the other thing I do with socks is bravely refrain from shoving the pair that constituted my entire fucking Christmas present from the OH up his arse sideways whilst still attached to the cardboard packaging and plastic hook.

It's my birthday tomorrow. The second thing might not be bravely resisted if he does that again.

AMomHasNoName · 12/01/2019 12:49

We have an odd sock basket. I put them in there when I'm sorting the laundry and putting it away .Every so i often, when it's too full I sort them out and hooray! We have matching socks again. But mostly, we just wear odd socks alot. Grin

Finfintytint · 12/01/2019 12:52

I think our missing socks are hiding up with the Tupperware lids in our house somewhere.

SnugglySnerd · 12/01/2019 12:52

We don't even have odd socks. The tiny toddler ones are put into a mesh bag attached to the handle of the laundry basket.
Everyone else's are big enough to not get lost. I peg them out in pairs so they can just be folded and put away when dry.

MsVestibule · 12/01/2019 12:53

They just go in the drawers along with the paired up ones. The lost one finds it's mate eventually.

SnugglySnerd · 12/01/2019 12:54

Oh yes dd1 likes wearing odd socks so mixes hers up on purpose! Dh's are all black too which helps.

silentcrow · 12/01/2019 12:59

None of you have sock clips?!

www.amazon.co.uk/Ruco-Apple-Clips-Sorted-Colour/dp/B000I46D9K/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=sockies&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1547297665&sr=8-1

I couldn't live without these. DH, DD1 and I all have similar, but not quite the same size feet. DH and I tend to wear black socks, DD's school is navy blue. Outside school both girls have quite similar socks with cute characters on or whatever, I can never remember which ones belong to which girl. It is hell trying to pair up even a few loose socks. Never have any problems if everyone uses the clips! The downside is that they won't take more than an hour in the tumbler. Great on the line or on the drying rack, though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2019 13:01

DH wears black socks (but different styles )
I wear one style of black socks for work (I bought 6 pairs recently) I throw a holed sock out immediately and when I replace mine I gather up all my old ones to recycle.

YY to net bags for each and they go on peg hangers in pairs .

For the odd ones , I have a little hanger where they live till the other ones turns up.

I think they bugger off with the teaspoons myself...

Sitranced · 12/01/2019 13:02

We rarely loose socks. They go in and then come out of the machine. As they're hung up to dry we make sure they're in pairs, then folded to be put away. Occasionally if there's an odd one it sits in the washing basket till it comes out of the machine with its mate.

melissasummerfield · 12/01/2019 13:05

I have approximately 76000 odd socks 😩

Tinuviel · 12/01/2019 13:10

I tip all pants, socks etc onto the settee and tell everyone to sort them with the threat that anything left will go in the bin. People dive in and sort out their own. I always wait till last. We do still have some plain black socks that nobody claims, so they get put in DS1s cupboard as he isn't away at university most of the time. (They are probably his.)

DSs and DH have black socks with small pictures on so they know whose are whose. DD and I have different socks, so they don't get muddled.

Rubusfruticosus · 12/01/2019 13:10

We don't lose socks. I understand losing baby socks if they take them off when you are out, but otherwise they will just be left in the machine, dropped on the way to or from the machine, caught up in other washing, and so on, so only temporarily lost surely?

picklemepopcorn · 12/01/2019 13:13

They are often in the bottom of people's drawers- do check there before you bin the odds!

We get everyone their own kind now, so it's easier to keep track. Also, brightly patterned so they are easier to match.
So much faster to match spots to spots, and stripes to stripes, than various versions of grey and black.

bigbluebus · 12/01/2019 13:13

Don't lose socks here. If I have a spare one in the washing machine it's usually because its partner is still lurking at the bottom of the laundry basket or because DH has left one in his gym bag!

Theunsungsong · 12/01/2019 13:18

Opened this thread ,thinking it was about trolls and sock puppets, to say 'you should report them to mumsnet because troll hunting is against the rules! Shines prefect badge and proudly replaces on spotlessly clean blazer.

Belindabauer · 12/01/2019 13:19

I have banned every single household member from wearing black socks.
We all have to wear patterned or coloured socks. My white trainer socks have gone!

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 12/01/2019 13:21

I don't have a problem with socks, plastic tubs on the other hand...

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 12/01/2019 13:21

I have a bag of single socks, it's really sad.
