I know it's Daily Fail but hey, they did the investigation and the research on contents so why not?
So, here goes the vegan sausage for everybody. Fermented fungus, shitloads of salt and palm oil.
It's my personal belief that in countries with cold seasons and limited availability of fresh vegetables and fruits we should be trying to eat more local than vegan because if you want to do it cheap, this is how you end up. Organic vegan diet is a first world luxury for now.

They run around the supermarkets, abuse people buying meat or eating meat in restaurants, screaming in your face that you are a murderer killing animals and should go vegan

Could some of the MN vegans promise to actually do this? It would be awesome! I've never actually seen it though, despite knowing many vegans. One of whom recently gave me very useful advice because I needed a milk substitute. She didn't scream at me or abuse me or anything. Sad

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 12/01/2019 19:12

Why are you 'sharing' it at all?

Why not? If you're passionate about a way of living that you think would benefit the whole of the planet then why would you keep that to yourself? It can be done without criticism and preaching.

Incidentally I am not a vegan. I've been trying Veganuary to see if it's something I could/want to commit to longer term although have been failing miserably the last few days for various reasons. I'm interested in eating more ethically and ecologically but I also see that for the vast majority of people it is neither possible, affordable not desirable to eat every day in a way that harms neither animals or the environment in some way.

MrsTerryPratcett · 12/01/2019 19:12

I just made hemp milk after the lovely vegan's advice. It's really easy.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:12

@MrsTerryPratcett I'd volunteer but I think I might just fall about laughing at myself!

MrsTerryPratcett · 12/01/2019 19:13

@rabbitfoodadvocate take one for the team. Pleeeeeaaase?

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:15

I'll think about it. But only because you asked so nicely! Yum to homemade hemp milk btw!

dangermouseisace · 12/01/2019 19:19

@mrsterrypratchett I could run up and down in my local Waitrose abusing people, but that would be the end of my free coffee and paper...

And in all seriousness, most real life people are open to the idea of reducing their meat and dairy consumption because of concerns over climate change. There isn’t a need to shout at people.

My local animal rights group vegan “aggressiveness” recently has been as follows:

Standing around in a circle with screens showing factory farms, waiting for people to approach them not the other way around.
Setting up a stall with leaflets and various vegan foods to try, to work out which is the best vegan sausage/cake/whatever.

No shouting in the supermarket. Shouting at hunting people doing actual hunting, not at shoppers minding their own business.

windowWAG · 12/01/2019 19:21

For the same reason you wouldn't want me to bore you about the benefits of eating meat every time I saw you eating. People don't want your morals imparted on them. These people know you love all the animals. They do get it. It's not for them.
Allowing it to be your crusade is what has given vegans such a bad name and allowed it to be mocked so readily.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:23

@dangermouseisace Same here. All seems very civilised in my neck of the woods!

The screens make me cry though (pregnancy hormones as much as anything else), so I just flash my vegan badge, high five and run by!

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:24

Nobody allows themselves to be mocked, they are abused by nasty little people for a difference of opinion and those people's own insecurities.

pantyclaws · 12/01/2019 19:24

Pretty sure Gregg's standard sausage rolls, which have been sold by the thousands for decades, are full of the shittest mechanically reclaimed meat, shitload of salt and fat too - but I've never seen anyone on here dissecting and lamenting the ingredients.

Funny that.

Anyone who has sausage rolls as a mainstay of their diet, vegan or not, doesn't give much of a shit about what it's made of.

Maryjoyce · 12/01/2019 19:29

Doodlelab. I was entertained by a part of your post where you say to use the manure from the animals ! What animals would there be if it wasn’t for the meat eaters ? Or do you think a farmer is going to keep animals to look pretty but not eat them just to supply you with manure?

goldengummybear · 12/01/2019 19:32

I think a lot of processed vegan stuff is an attempt to covert non-vegans to veganism. For example if you could manufacture a mushroom based burger that tasted as good as a beef burger then a meat eater might choose it. The vegans I know choose things that are naturally vegan rather than processed stuff. I think that the rise in processed vegan food is led by veganism being trendy- my kids are brainwashed by YouTube bloggers that Veganism is healthy and keeps you slim. This year I was shocked to see so many Veganuary ads. It's good to eat healthily after Xmas excess but eating local is always better than "healthy" stuff with a million food miles.

EerieSilence · 12/01/2019 19:33

@dangermouseisace - I never said it's only vegans responsible for the exploitation of the Third World. But they already have their share and should the world go vegan, it will only get worse because companies will rely on imported food.
@rabbitfoodadvocate - not everyone can and is able to cook food from scratch everyday. You describe a very privileged situation but the fact is that making your own tofu and spending 40 a week may soon be a history once you have children around and you are kneeling over with insomnia and later on when you go back to work and need to juggle work, commute and family life.
You could also find yourself in a situation where you are closer to a food bank than to nearer supermarket. Think about what becomes of your lifestyle choices and priorities then. This is the reality for many families right now and this is the point I am trying to make.

My daughter is a vegan. She managed while at University and while on a low, spasmodic wage due to the nature of her career. She eats really healthily so it isn’t necessarily expensive.

popehilarious · 12/01/2019 19:39

I think a lot more of vegans than I do of people who promote Daily Mail articles. They are responsible for far more hatred, violence and division of society, let alone the devaluing of critical thinking.

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:45

@EerieSilence I actually regret commenting on here.

I made it clear I know that I'm in a very fortunate position and yet you're trying to make me feel bad about it? And warning me I might end up in food banks? What the heck is that about?

My DH and I have worked very hard, paid off our mortgage in our thirties and are now self-employed so that we can dedicate ourselves to raising a little one and living how we want to. Good grief. I won't apologise for the sacrifices we've made to get where we are now and not will I ever take our life for granted, but I will say that I think you really need to look at your own attitude. Because from where I'm sitting, it smells worse than a vegan's bathroom after a portion of lentil bake.

stubbornstains · 12/01/2019 19:45

People want to eat. They want to eat cheap

Well, the first thing they'd be wanting to do is to stop buying meat then - it costs an absolute bomb compared to pulses!

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 12/01/2019 19:45

WindowWAG I think you missed the part where I said I'm not a vegan. I do understand why people get vocal about it, as it's something they feel very strongly about. Like most people I wouldn't appreciate being preached at but funnily enough I have never experienced it from the vegans I have known (most of whom I didn't tell me they were vegan until it came up in conversation).

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:46

@popehilarious @stubbornstains ❤️

EmeraldShamrock · 12/01/2019 19:48

My Dsis and some friends are vegan and eats mainly home cooked healthy meals no ready made thry use leather handbags and let their DC eat animal products Confused
I asked them if the world stops eating animal products there'll be no need for the animals then so you would like them to be instinct? Her answer is they can roam freely, I seriously doubt a dairy farmer will keep a field of cows as his pets.
I agree with some aspects of a vegan diet and am a low meat eater, though I think lots of vegans are OTT and in it for the fashion fad it has become.

dangermouseisace · 12/01/2019 19:49

@eeriesilence there is so much wrong with what you’ve said, I’m not even going to bother coming up with a reply. That is because a quick google will bring up lots of evidence that you are wrong, so I suggest f you are really interested (which I doubt you are) then do that.

And, BTW, I know vegans who have been to food banks, and were given vegan foods. Tinned beans, veg, pasta, fruit etc are all cheap and vegan. I’ve been vegan and a student, vegan and completely broke with young kids. Still vegan though, it’s still cheaper than eating meat.

Guineapiglovers · 12/01/2019 19:51

Guineapiglovers · 12/01/2019 19:51

What a total pile of fucking daily mail shite

rabbitfoodadvocate · 12/01/2019 19:52

@dangermouseisace We donate to our local food bank regularly and it's always vegan-friendly goodies. Like all that unethical dried pasta, beans etc that make eating meat seem like to obvious decision again. Lol.
