Damaged a parked car :(

Not as much into AIBU, posting for traffic.

On my way to work a couple of days ago I ran into a parked car (narrow road, oncoming traffic, got too close), totally my fault. No one in the other car, no one around, I left a note with my details but I think people may be away as when I drive by daily car and note still there.

Just asking people who may have been in a similar situation- I already contacted my insurer as my car needs repairs (the damaged car will do too, but a lot less so), and now I don't know what to expect from the imminent phone call except for the rightly pissed off people. Do I just give them our insurance details? If they won't want to go through their insurance route, can we insist if they want cash instead (if lets say they quote us too much for me to afford the repair?).

They might be a bit pissed because of the inconvenience, but it was an accident and you've done exactly the right thing in leaving your details and reporting it to your insurance. Just give them your insurance details (company, phone number & claim reference). If they don't want to go through their own insurance, yours will happily deal directly with them & sort repairs/pay out. I wouldn't just give them cash... That's what your insurance is for and, as you're already claiming for your car, it won't make any difference on your policy.

No-one drives perfectly all the time. You've done exactly the right thing. If it were me I might be annoyed but mainly I would just be glad you'd bothered to leave your details - so often that is not the case.

My car was parked in October and somebody went into it. Yes at the time I was fuming and in shock but the woman who did it was in such a state I didn't get angry with her was more devastated about my car and the fact I wasn't even in it. I rang my insurance who dealt with it all and gave me a courtesy car, all sorted now. No one was hurt and that's the important thing. You did the right thing x
