To wonder what George would be like if her mother was a narc?

George from The Famous Five, that is.

Her mother indulges George’s every whim so George grows up confident and self assured in her 1950’s boys clothes. But what if her mother ad insisted that George dress in flouncy dresses and be the girly girl that her mother wants? What if her mother had drowned Timmy in a sack rather than let Georgina keep him? What if she puts Georgina down at every opportunity and says things like “if only you were slim/pretty/more like my friends’ daughters then you would be acceptable (to me)?”

What would George have turned out like?

I've not read these for a long time but even as a child I thought George's mother was too wrapped up in being married to worry/think about what George was up to. More neglect than indulgence.

Like most of Enid Blyton's characters (except for the few token - whisper it - 'Circus folk'), the Kirrins were wealthy by default, so this automatically made George an eccentric, which is acceptable to all - everybody loves an eccentric.

If she'd been destined to become somebody's cook, housemaid or governess, she would have been an absolute disgrace - and probably sent to live out her days in one of the towers at Smuggler's Top.

Did you call?

These days she’d probably have been marched to the GP via Mermaids.
