To ask if anyone has done Invisalign or other adult braces?

Nervously contemplating a big spend on Invisalign or some other adult braces type thing to finally address my teeth. They're healthy but not very aesthetically pleasing. Not terrible though, either, so I'm wondering just how much discomfort/inconvenience there is with getting them done with the invisible aligners or even adult braces. Anyone done it? Was it worth it? How many months did it take from start to finish?

@Lellochip Thank you, I'm definitely going to look into it! I actually don't care at all if the device is visible to others...

CharltonLido73 · 18/01/2019 22:27

I was quoted £4000 this week for Invisalign by my dentist. I had braces as a child, but my teeth have moved over the years. Were I twenty years younger I would have gone for it, but now, aged 60, I think I'll pass...

Ultramic · 18/01/2019 22:30

Forgot to post a pic.

I've got another 8 months left yet!

I've kept a blog with weekly updates and lots of info/photos - I won't risk looking like a spammer by posting it but happy to PM it to anyone interested. :)

To add - I had a 7mm overbite & severe crowding. 3 extractions needed prior to brace fitting.

RoboticSealpup · 19/01/2019 09:09

How much have others paid for the Inman aligner? (I live in London.)

eco1636 · 19/01/2019 10:00

My dentist said I'd need interdental reduction as my problem is crowding make them misaligned.
Has anyone else been told this? It is basically shaving off millimetres from the sides of each tooth where they touch to make room before aligning them....

Lellochip · 19/01/2019 10:14

My Inman was 2k all in, retainers too etc. In Yorkshire.

I had the interdental reduction eco - was like flossing with sandpaper hehe. The amount they file isn't really visible, might have teeny tiny gaps until the teeth move to fit the space better

YourFly · 19/01/2019 12:29

I paid £1800 in total for silver train tracks, top & bottom. I wore them for 2 years, 2 years ago.

April241 · 19/01/2019 12:35

I haven't read the thread yet, but I had braces last year and it took 6 months. Most of the time I was in wires with 4 weekly appointments, the last 4 weeks I was in retainers all day and night and only removed for eating.

At first it's pretty uncomfortable and after each tightening it's really tender for a few days. I had quite sore cheeks and inner lips with all the rubbing but you get used to it, took about 2 weeks for the ulcers and sore parts to calm down.

I'm over the moon I done it though, really pleased.

@April241 It looks amazing!

April241 · 19/01/2019 12:38

Oh also, I have a permanent brave on the backs of my teeth which acts as a second retainer. I don't wear my plastic night retainers every night but I do try to do it most nights

April241 · 19/01/2019 12:46

Thanks robotic Grin

MatildaTheCat · 19/01/2019 12:47

Has anyone had a front gap closed using any of these systems? I wore the plate type brace as a teen and the gap was closed but they very quickly drifted apart again ( I’m actually missing one tooth at the top which obviously creates a space).

I would go for the wire behind the teeth option given the choice.

utterflapdoodle · 19/01/2019 12:51

I had Invisalign about seven years ago in my early forties. The treatment lasted two years in total. I'm a "tongue thruster" which is not nearly as sexy as it sounds Grin and resulted in gappy, protruding teeth since I was about ten years old.

I was always self conscious about them. I constantly compared myself to folk with nice, normal teeth and I smiled with my mouth shut in photos.

The treatment was uncomfortable, downright painful at times to be honest but I got used to it and I don't regret it at all. I would do it again if I had to. Despite those funny bumpy attachments on several of my teeth it was scarcely noticeable at all to other people. I had to point it out before they really noticed anything different about me.

I now have those nice, normal teeth I was so envious of. I don't have a Hollywood smile by any means but they're not wonky any more and I smile openly now without giving it a second thought.

The cost was in the region of 6k. I live in Germany and I'm very lucky that my incredibly generous health insurance provided by my employer paid for most of it even though it was 100% cosmetic.

utterflapdoodle · 19/01/2019 13:05

@MatildaTheCat I had big gaps at the front. One was so big I could get my little finger in it! The Invisalign treatment closed the gaps pretty well. Not 100% but so close you could hardly see any daylight between them.

I don't wear my retainer like I should which I know is very naughty and not recommended. I put it in for a few hours every two or three weeks just to check it still fits. Incredibly in all these years since the treatment my teeth have hardly moved at all despite the fact that I'm still a tongue thruster and always will be.Smile

Watching with interest 🤔

MiniDoofa · 19/01/2019 14:12

I had fixed braces with ceramic on top teeth. Took a year. People told me “oh they’re fine” but that lower tooth had moved further and further back in the last few years.
I had minor pain for a few days each time I had the wires changed but it was so, so worth it. I’m delighted. I have fixed retainers top and bottom and plastic trays for night. All totally fine doesn’t bother me.
Can’t recommend it highly enough.
Cost was $7000AUD.

Not rtft but yes I had adult braces and it’s honestly changed my life, so much more confidence now. I say do it!!

QuilliamCakespeare · 19/01/2019 19:51

Wow @MiniDoofa your teeth could be fake, they're so perfect!

I can't wait to get mine whitened once it's all finished. I'm three months in but am expecting for at least another 6-9 before both top and bottom braces are off.

Isthisit22 · 19/01/2019 20:16

I have quite a bad overbite and in the last couple of years my front upper teeth have become so over crowded that they are protruding awfully. Wouldn't put a pic on here as they are so bad 😢
Anyone has an overbite corrected? Would I need surgery?

museumum · 19/01/2019 20:21

I spent £4K on Invisalign after overzealous orthodontics in the 1980s removed four teeth and pulled my teeth too far in. Invisalign was able to push the out again at the sides to make room for them to straighten in a way ordinary braces couldn’t.
It took 18mo and the blocks glued to the teeth are really uncomfortable when you take the aligners out so really it’s not an option to remove them except for cleaning.
But for me it was totally worth it. My face shape is better too.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 19/01/2019 20:27

April how did they fix your chipped tooth? Both me and dd get fixed braces this month but she has several chips and worried they will be so obvious.

Waterlemon · 19/01/2019 21:24

I have pretty bad teeth - they are “stable” now as I look after them, but I have had lots of dental treatment- fillings, root canals, I have 2 crowns and a bridge!

Has anyone with poor teeth had their teeth straightened? All the previous posters teeth look in great condition (and pretty straight “before” treatment)

I have a cross bite, and would love straight teeth but don’t know if my teeth would cope with being moved about. I have a quote for some veneers, but my dentist said Invisalign type braces wouldn’t be suitable for me at recommended I see an orthodontist rather than having cosmetic straightening.

museumum · 19/01/2019 21:30

I got my Invisalign from a proper orthodontist.
I would recommend a proper orthodontist too as they can give you all the options.

jacksonmaine · 19/01/2019 21:38

Agree with @alaric771. My DN has had this done and my DSis stopped treatment 3/4 way through as she felt it flattened her face/profile hard to explain, but her face has altered and made her features less attractive.
