AIBU to avoid a film because the director also made The Lobster

Possibly one of the worst films ever made. He's since directed The Favourite which looks good fun but can he be trusted? I don't want to waste my money.

I hear you OP!! Hated the lobster 🦞

Recently saw the favourite and absolutely loved the brilliant acting, costumes, dark comedy etc... so definitely give it a go. Plot was still a bit odd but nothing like the lobster.

Calvinsmam · 11/01/2019 15:18

Oh I loved Dogtooth!!

I didn’t realise it was the same guy.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 11/01/2019 15:22

Never seen The Lobster - will have to find it somewhere. The Favourite is brilliant, bonkers but brilliant. 3 first class performances from the leading actresses.

exWifebeginsat40 · 11/01/2019 15:23

Triangle (with Melissa George) is excellent, but it’s one of those films where the last 10 minutes make the most sense. the only other movie that has had me shouting oh FUCK, no! was Hereditary.

although Hereditary was fucking bonkers and awful and compelling and what the Actual Eff and like being on acid on a rollercoaster with wonky wheels that runs through a cursed abattoir and i loved it.

In Bruges is a triumph, and i am very much looking forward to seeing The Favourite. you can stick Tom Hiddlestone up your arse though. figuratively, obvs.

AgathaMisty · 11/01/2019 15:23

I have never seen the Lobster but I just saw someone mention Triangle! What on earth, worst film ever!

I get how you could say that as it's a film that you either love or hate like The Lobster but it can be understood on so many levels that it had me questioning and reading possible explanations about it for hours afterwards. I love those kinds of films.

GraceMarks · 11/01/2019 15:27

I liked The Lobster. I also loved The Favourite, although I only found out they were directed by the same person after I'd seen it already. The Favourite is enormous fun (until it turns nasty about two-thirds of the way through) and the performances are great too. I've always liked Rachel Weisz but after seeing her in 18th century riding gear and boots, I have quite frankly developed an alarming crush on her.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/01/2019 15:31

Everyone has an off day occasionally.
I preferred The Lobster (thought provoking) to In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, which admittedly isn't saying much.
But I do fancy seeing The Favourite, have heard it's very good.

WendyImhome · 11/01/2019 15:31

Love the Lobster. Can't wait to see The Favourite!

Solasshole · 11/01/2019 15:37

The Lobster was imo was just a pretentious trying-to-hard-to-be-quirky and all round terrible film.

The Triangle was an excellent mindfuck film that actually had a storyline which makes sense eventually unlike the lobster that just vaguely waffles random post apocalyptic tropes for 2 odd hours but it is a confusing film if you're not paying attention.

But then I love reincarnation/time travel/whatever type movies so Wink each to their own

Anyone that liked Triangle would also probably like Predestination & Cloud Atlas. Predestination is nice and concise and everything gets wrapped up cleanly in the end, Cloud Atlas makes more sense the more times you watch it (or if you read the book)

Solasshole · 11/01/2019 15:38

Also: ARQ on Netflix was very very good

IconicWaffle · 11/01/2019 15:38

I didn’t mind The Lobster, but positively LOVED The Favourite. The cinematography is similar and there’s a kind of blunt dialogue in both - but the content and plot are wildly different. One is firmly on planet bonkers, the other is about a very real monarch.

Lottapianos · 11/01/2019 15:43

'I've always liked Rachel Weisz but after seeing her in 18th century riding gear and boots, I have quite frankly developed an alarming crush on her.'

She's divine, isn't she? Face of an angel. And all the riding gear was fabulous on her

BadBear · 11/01/2019 15:44

The Lobster was a masterpiece! His style is not for the fainthearted thought (think Dogtooth)

I have followed his career since 'My Best Friend' and he has evolved so much over the years so give it a shot and it might surprise you.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 11/01/2019 16:07

ExWife you sound like my dream cinema buddy!

Imfinehowareyou · 11/01/2019 16:11

The Favourite is amazing. I haven't watched anything else by the director but on further googling it seems that The Favourite is a more mainstream offering from him. It does seem to have an abrupt ending but it makes sense. Awesome acting.

AvocadoYUK · 11/01/2019 16:21

I'd say give it a chance, only start avoiding director films after 3 films you don't like. Hence why I never see an M.Night Shyamalan films anymore

DarlingNikita · 11/01/2019 16:24

I quite liked The Lobster but I CBA seeing The Favourite. I'm a bit over Olivia Colman

JamAtkins · 11/01/2019 16:27

I’m the exact sort of person who should have loved The Lobster but I thought it was rubbish. In fairness I think I enjoyed the first 20-30 minutes of it but it was so cringily self conscious and contrived and got weaker and weaker as it went on. I’m chancing it with The Favourite though.

beanaseireann · 11/01/2019 16:28

I hated In Bruges but loved 3Billboards.
I enjoyed The Favourite but did not see the Lobster because it sounded sh*te

NoWayNoHow · 11/01/2019 16:29

I have never even heard of The Lobster, or indeed the person who directed it, but I've seen The Favourite and thought "amazing script, amazing acting, wanky/try-hard directing"

GruciusMalfoy · 11/01/2019 16:30

I haven't seen The Lobster, but saw The Favourite last week. It's very good.

Reccy2018 · 11/01/2019 16:33

The Lobster is brilliant! Also loved The Favourite

papayasareyum · 11/01/2019 16:35

I didn't even realise The Favourite was directed by the director of The Lobster (which is silly and almost as awful and Emperors new clothes as killing of a sacred deer, which was utter crap) and I'd already decided it looked very very silly and unwatchable. I love quirky, give me some Lars Von Triers, Tim, Burton etc., any day, but the Lobster dude..... Nah

NorthernRunner · 11/01/2019 16:36

I haven’t seen the lobster, but my husband has, he didn’t enjoy it as such but thought the film was good. My relative works in the film industry and often sees all these films months before they hit the cinemas, she has been raving on at me about the favourite for a while. I will go and see it.
Interestingly, she also said how dog awful the new Steve coogan film is, (Stan & Ollie?) so perhaps one to avoid x

kmc1111 · 11/01/2019 16:51

The Lobster is amazing!!! I’m not sure how so many people who hate that kind of film managed to see it, it was very clearly marketed as what it was.

If you hated it I can’t see you liking The Favorite. It’s more accessible but it has the same strain of dark black absurdist humour, and the ending is sure to piss you off.
