AIBU to avoid a film because the director also made The Lobster

Possibly one of the worst films ever made. He's since directed The Favourite which looks good fun but can he be trusted? I don't want to waste my money.

That would be The Favourite which has recently garnered best Actress in a comedy at the Golden Globes and stars Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz?

I quite liked The Lobster! It was just so bizarre that it kept me glued to the screen.

I had this exact conversation with DH the other day - I told him if The Favourite was directed by the same guy who did The Lobster it would put me off watching it. The Lobster was so weird. UADNBU

YABU The Lobster was TERRIFIC. If you don't like eccentric films, don't go to anything by this director. I do and I make a point of seeing anything he does. I've just seen The Favourite and it was excellent but I suspect you won't like it. I'm assuming you don't like anything directed by Martin McDonagh either? (In Bruges, 3 Billboards, Seven Psychopaths)

I watched The Lobster after seeing the trailer and stupidly thinking it was a quirky romantic comedy with Colin Farrell.

Never have I felt so deceived.

I was well up for seeing The Favourite until I saw who directed it. No thank you.

I loved The Lobster so I'm probably not best placed to recommend films to you but I thought The Favourite was marvellous. Much funnier than The Lobster too so that might help if you struggle with the director.

Hated the lobster and it left such a bad taste in my mouth I don't want to see The Favourite.

Loved 3 Billboards, In Bruges, and 7 Psychopaths though; to me, totally different in type to the (horrible!!) lobster.

I've only seen In Bruges of those listed and I enjoyed that.

The Lobster must be like marmite. I'm surprised that anyone thought it was amazing but then life would be dull etc etc

Another recent film I couldn't watch again is Highrise.

Oh god I hated Highrise. I watched it on a night flight home from the states and something about being one of the few awake, tiredness gin made it feel like I was watching a nightmare. Horrid. I had one of my worst ever migraines when we landed and I swear something about the film contributed.

Lobster was quite bonkers though I have no idea what was actually happening at the end and I might go and see The Favourite next week. We're doing Meerkats though so if it's awful I won't feel as cross.

I love quirky films but hated The Lobster, it was just so self aware and ‘ooh look at me being quirky’.

My DH on the other hand loved it and I really respect his opinion so I think it must just be a marmite thing.

Wait what? Did I miss something? It started well, was ok in the middle and the end was rubbish. It was a real let down. I'm with all the posters that thought it was terrible. I even got my DS 21 to watch it with his girlfriend for a laugh (told them it was great). He said it was by far and away one of the worst films he had ever seen and why on earth did I recommend it? Grin. He is now lending it to his friends to perpetuate the misery. Grin Maybe we will be surprised and someone will like it. Smile

I am going to see The Favourite this weekend. I'm worried now.

I had a sort of mental breakdown watching the Lobster - was really scary! I really want to watch The Favourite though.

I enjoyed The Lobster. Anyone who enjoyed it as well should check out his first big film Dogtooth. Often gets voted as one of the strangest films ever made! I absolutely loved it and got it completely

I saw The Favourite last weekend and thought it was fab, although like all Lanthimos films, it definitely won't be for everyone
