AIBU to avoid a film because the director also made The Lobster

Possibly one of the worst films ever made. He's since directed The Favourite which looks good fun but can he be trusted? I don't want to waste my money.

Ooh. I've been wanting to see The Favourite but The Lobster was excruciating.

GahWhatever · 11/01/2019 12:35

That would be The Favourite which has recently garnered best Actress in a comedy at the Golden Globes and stars Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz?
Yes I'd probably risk it!

TheGoddessFrigg · 11/01/2019 12:36

Ooh I LOVED the Lobster!

AgathaMisty · 11/01/2019 12:37

I quite liked The Lobster! It was just so bizarre that it kept me glued to the screen.

RollerJed · 11/01/2019 12:38

I was just saying the other day The Lobster was the worst film I've ever seen.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/01/2019 12:38

Haven’t seen the Lobster, so cannot feel your pain, The Favourite was really good though. Odd, but good.

jewllerybox · 11/01/2019 12:47

I had this exact conversation with DH the other day - I told him if The Favourite was directed by the same guy who did The Lobster it would put me off watching it. The Lobster was so weird. UADNBU

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 11/01/2019 12:58

YABU The Lobster was TERRIFIC. If you don't like eccentric films, don't go to anything by this director. I do and I make a point of seeing anything he does. I've just seen The Favourite and it was excellent but I suspect you won't like it. I'm assuming you don't like anything directed by Martin McDonagh either? (In Bruges, 3 Billboards, Seven Psychopaths)

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 11/01/2019 13:01

I watched The Lobster after seeing the trailer and stupidly thinking it was a quirky romantic comedy with Colin Farrell.

Never have I felt so deceived.

I was well up for seeing The Favourite until I saw who directed it. No thank you.

TanteRose · 11/01/2019 13:03

Seriously? The Lobster was amazing!
I can't wait to see The Favourite

RandomObject · 11/01/2019 13:08

The Lobster is amazing
Killing of a Sacred Deer is amazing

In Bruges and Seven Psycopaths are incredible

I really want to see The Favourite

faintlyridiculous · 11/01/2019 13:09

I loved The Lobster so I'm probably not best placed to recommend films to you but I thought The Favourite was marvellous. Much funnier than The Lobster too so that might help if you struggle with the director.

RandomObject · 11/01/2019 13:11

Actually, while I'm here, does anyone have any recommendations for films if you DID like The Lobster?

AgathaMisty · 11/01/2019 13:36

@RandomObject do you like films where you are left with questions and thinking about it for a day afterwards? I don't know if they are your type of film but I really liked:

The One I Love
Triangle

haverhill · 11/01/2019 13:40

You might like Youth, Bright Star and Trees Lounge.

Grumpasaurus · 11/01/2019 13:47

Hated the lobster and it left such a bad taste in my mouth I don't want to see The Favourite.

Loved 3 Billboards, In Bruges, and 7 Psychopaths though; to me, totally different in type to the (horrible!!) lobster.

Readysteadygoat · 11/01/2019 14:04

I've only seen In Bruges of those listed and I enjoyed that.

The Lobster must be like marmite. I'm surprised that anyone thought it was amazing but then life would be dull etc etc

Another recent film I couldn't watch again is Highrise.

OP posts:
tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 11/01/2019 14:09

Oh god I hated Highrise. I watched it on a night flight home from the states and something about being one of the few awake, tiredness gin made it feel like I was watching a nightmare. Horrid. I had one of my worst ever migraines when we landed and I swear something about the film contributed.

Lobster was quite bonkers though I have no idea what was actually happening at the end and I might go and see The Favourite next week. We're doing Meerkats though so if it's awful I won't feel as cross.

Calvinsmam · 11/01/2019 14:13

I love quirky films but hated The Lobster, it was just so self aware and ‘ooh look at me being quirky’.

My DH on the other hand loved it and I really respect his opinion so I think it must just be a marmite thing.

Tinty · 11/01/2019 14:15

YABU The Lobster was TERRIFIC.

Wait what? Did I miss something? It started well, was ok in the middle and the end was rubbish. It was a real let down. I'm with all the posters that thought it was terrible. I even got my DS 21 to watch it with his girlfriend for a laugh (told them it was great). He said it was by far and away one of the worst films he had ever seen and why on earth did I recommend it? Grin. He is now lending it to his friends to perpetuate the misery. Grin Maybe we will be surprised and someone will like it. Smile

I am going to see The Favourite this weekend. I'm worried now.

AgathaMisty · 11/01/2019 15:03

@RandomObject another one I really liked was Stay (2005)

recently · 11/01/2019 15:06

I had a sort of mental breakdown watching the Lobster - was really scary! I really want to watch The Favourite though.

Davros · 11/01/2019 15:08

Jason Solomons hated The Lobster but really liked the new film despite fearing more crap from the director

Dextrodependant · 11/01/2019 15:09

I have never seen the Lobster but I just saw someone mention Triangle! What on earth, worst film ever!

Lottapianos · 11/01/2019 15:09

I enjoyed The Lobster. Anyone who enjoyed it as well should check out his first big film Dogtooth. Often gets voted as one of the strangest films ever made! I absolutely loved it and got it completely

I saw The Favourite last weekend and thought it was fab, although like all Lanthimos films, it definitely won't be for everyone
