There must be a de-icer that works straight away?

So this morning I almost missed my train as de icing the car took too long. Which got me thinking there must surely be a de icer that works straight away?

@Sparklingbrook is that easier than it sounds??

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2019 09:22

It's fine I can do it on my own but if there's anyone around to help that's good too.
It's a bit tricky alone if it's windy. But you just trap one side in then go round to the other side pull it tight and trap the other one.

I used ti use a scraper but my windscreen got really badly scratched all over. It was horrible driving a night as car headlights would be distorted all over the screen. I have been very reluctant to use one on my new car. I find the sprays work pretty well, but like others it is the demisting of hte interior that takes ages. I would love to know hte answer to that one!

My cheapo windscreen cover I picked up from a garage has magnets, one on each corner and one at the top centre.

I put a blanket over my windscreen overnight (when I remember). I have found when it is really cold warm water just refreezes.

Our new car has a heated front windscreen it's bloody amazing.

Scraping the car takes seconds

Not always... If the air is dry and the frost formed
directly then it’s easy. If it’s rain that’s frozen that’s very different and much tougher to scrape off if it hasn’t started to thaw.

We bought a windscreen cover from Lidl two years ago, less than £5 and keeps the screen completely ice free. The rest is easy to handle with a decent scrapper.

You can even buy full car cover, a neighbour has one, she pulls it off and drives away.

Do not put the engine and air con on, bad for the environment.

Do not pour water of any temperature on your windscreen. It could end very badly. I thought this was common knowledge tbh.

Is this why everybody knows you must never take/leave a car out in the rain? Hmm

Hot or boiling water = terrible idea and likely to crack the screen

Lukewarm water = great, safe, environmentally-aware way to clear the ice off your windscreen

Just take as much water as you will need (2 or 3 litres is probably enough), as you obviously mustn't leave the car running and unattended. Turn on the engine and put the windscreen heater on at full heat and full blast and then pour the water over front and rear windscreens, both front side windows (at least) and headlights and sprinkle/rub some over the wing mirrors.

You may need to wipe the inside with a cloth, but otherwise, less than a minute and you should be good to go.

This is also a very good option - although it might be rather wet when you come to remove it in the morning, in which case you'll need somewhere suitable to leave it to dry off (bath?).

You don't need the screen to be kept/made toasty hot - just a little over 0 degrees is all that's necessary.
