There must be a de-icer that works straight away?

So this morning I almost missed my train as de icing the car took too long. Which got me thinking there must surely be a de icer that works straight away?

WARM water (from the tap) NOT boiling from the kettle, as my neighbour demonstrated to the rest of us last March when she poured a kettle of boiling water on her windscreen which cracked instantly.

Magicstar1 · 09/01/2019 19:25

Best thing I’ve found is scraping with my bank card...clears it in seconds with hardly any effort.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 09/01/2019 19:29

Do not pour water of any temperature on your windscreen. It could end very badly. I thought this was common knowledge tbh.

MotherofDinosaurs · 09/01/2019 19:31

TopBitchoftheWitches people say this but I've yet to see it. Like I said, hot water out the tap, twenty years, no problems. (obvs not boiling straight from kettle)

planespotting · 09/01/2019 19:33

When I lived in a cold cold place we had those mittens with a scrapper attached
They were good

MaxTeyon · 09/01/2019 19:34

Tepid water is absolutely fine and will not crack your screen.

TipseyTorvey · 09/01/2019 19:35

Put a bit of vinegar and salt in tap warm water to stop it refreezing and poor over once the engine has been on a couple of minutes. I hate scraping as I lose all sensation in my hands then lose more time trying to defrost my hands in my armpits Grin

Mine's like this one.

Hot water bottle on the dash for a bit before you have to leave, old sheet/towel or purpose made sheet thing over the windscreen the night before.

TipseyTorvey · 09/01/2019 19:50

Pour!! Sorry

Oakenbeach · 09/01/2019 20:13

Even cold water?... it just needs to be enough to melt the ice. Given that it rarely gets especially cold in the UK (assuming that’s where you’re from) even water from the cold water tap is normally quite enough..... at say 15-20c should melt a thin cover of -2c ice with ease.

Bollocks.

Honestlyofficer · 10/01/2019 08:35

2 parts rubbing alcohol to 1 part water in a spray bottle. Instantly clears the ice and leaves a lovely clean windscreen too.

StreetwiseHercules · 10/01/2019 08:36

Take the kettle go the car and pour hot water on the windscreen. Works every time.

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 10/01/2019 08:37

I agree a jug or two of tepid water does the job in a jiffy.

SoupDragon · 10/01/2019 08:40

Use a windscreen cover.

I used to put them front and back and also managed to rig some so they worked on the front side windows too. Go out, remove covers, job done.

BunsOfAnarchy · 10/01/2019 08:40

Water!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 10/01/2019 08:53

Consolidatedyourloins as the owner of a cat who died doing exactly that, thank you for thinking of cats! X

Wonkypalmtree · 10/01/2019 08:55

Water, every time. Tepid, with engine running and rear window heater on. No delays

The night before de-icer is really greasy and will
Make your car very dirty after.

NewPapaGuinea · 10/01/2019 08:56

Scraper and go out 5 minutes earlier.

sirmione16 · 10/01/2019 08:58

I put an old bed sheet over the windscreen and it's doesn't frost over, then just scrape the back and sides. Easy

Holidayshopping · 10/01/2019 09:01

Are they difficult to attach @Sparklingbrook and others who have the windscreen covers?

Do you shut the front doors around them to keep it on?

Figmentofimagination · 10/01/2019 09:05

Aldi were selling some windscreen covers a couple of weeks ago. Some stores might still have them. They have smaller sections at the side that you secure by trapping in the car doors.

StealthPolarBear · 10/01/2019 09:09

Scraping the car takes seconds but it takes ages for mine to de mist from the inside. How do people deal with that

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2019 09:17

Yes you just trap the edges in the front doors to keep it tight Holiday.
