I don't like....
Vegetables,
Fruit,
Fish?

There are so many different varieties of each! And they all tastes different! Surely there must be some that you like?!

I hate all fish, all seafood, all kinds, cannot stand the smell, the texture, the taste, it's all vile, horrible stuff.

I like some vegetables but not others

Same with fruit

JassyRadlett · 08/01/2019 19:27

Loads of people hate veg as they hate the texture.

What, all of them? Cooked spinach v leek mash v raw carrot v broccoli? Peas v beans? Onion? Raw v cooked? That’s a lot of textures...

Purpleartichoke · 08/01/2019 19:30

Fish has two factors 1) freshwater fish has bones. Not normal to eat something that could cut you. 2) most seafood has a distinct smell I just can’t get past. I have to avoid the work cafeteria on days they serve salmon because the smell makes me wretch. DH is only allowed to cook fish outside.

I do like a really good piece of sashimi grade ahi very lightly seared. I used to live someplace I could get that because we lived near where the boats docked. Where we live now it is not available.

SachaStark · 08/01/2019 19:37

... But a dish of really good, well-cooked fish/seafood doesn't smell the same as a fish market.

Fuck me, does anyone walk into an abattoir and go, "Oooh, yeah, pork chops tonight!" ?!

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2019 19:41

Never visited an abbatoir believe it or not, been to loads of fish markets though. Bleurgh.

canibehereifimnotamum · 08/01/2019 19:54

This drives me crazy as well! Squid doesn't taste the same as salmon, a parsnip doesn't taste the same as broccoli! Just try it!!!

PookieDo · 08/01/2019 20:12

@JassyRadlett

Anyone I know who doesn’t like vegetables doesn’t like the mushy texture of cooked vegetables. Whether they eat them raw I don’t know do i? I think it’s a combination of they don’t actually smell as good as they taste (or of much at all) they come from the ground and a lot of people hate the idea of mud bugs and the like.

Some people have probably had bad experiences or grown up in poverty. My parents raised me on the sole diet of baked beans, sausages, fish fingers, pork chops, peas, potatoes and mushrooms. The most cheap of the cheap. Sometimes carrots. I had never even tried a lot of fruit, meat, vegetables or fish until I was an ADULT so therefore it took a lot of years to build up to realising that things were nice

I do blame parents for a lot of this in adults - I know a parent who allowed her then 12yo child to never have to eat fruit as he was sick once when about 2 after eating fruit and they all perpetuated the myth he couldn’t eat fruit. She fed him smoothies, which he would eat. So it was a texture issue. And his mothers fault!

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2019 20:15

I do think that if you have tried it then it's ok not to like it, but if the look of something doesn't appeal then why would you want to try?

We are lucky that we have choice.

BiteyShark · 08/01/2019 20:17

I can't stand the smell of any fish or seafood. It used to make me vomit when I was a child. As an adult I have tried a few different types of fish and seafood to check that it isn't something I have grown out of but honestly I don't enjoy eating them and whilst there are so many other yummy foods to eat I don't see the point in 'enduring a meal'.

iklboo · 08/01/2019 20:23

I don't like all seafood but I have tried most to know what I don't like. I like most fish, adore sushi and sashimi.

Veg - not keen on broccoli, cauliflower, swede, turnip or aubergine. Love cabbage, sprouts, parsnips, carrots, spinach.

Where does avocado fall? Don't like it either way.

Fruit - don't like mango, lychees

SilverySurfer · 08/01/2019 20:25

I don't like pasta, rice, Indian, Chinese, any cuisine but British. Doesn't affect anyone else so why do you care?

JassyRadlett · 08/01/2019 20:43

I still find it perplexing, tbh, to dismiss all veg because some is mushy when it is (over) cooked.

I’m not a fan over overboiled veg personally. If it’s mushy it’s been fucked up. But to dismiss all veg on the basis of the texture of some veg is silly.

Fattymcfaterson · 08/01/2019 20:45

Only british cuisine? Don't you get bored? There's only so many fry ups and roast dinners I can eat 😂

Eponymous · 08/01/2019 20:50

I didn't used to like fish. Then I left England and found out I just didn't like cod

boomfloom · 08/01/2019 21:00

YANBU esp when it comes to veg. I don't understand it either. Not only does a carrot taste different to a cabbage, each of these veg can be prepared in different ways. Surely nobody would say that sauerkraut tastes the same as roasted carrots or that even their texture is similar.

Pk37 · 08/01/2019 21:03

I love fish and vegetables but can take or leave fruit .. meh

BitchQueen90 · 08/01/2019 21:12

I'm not a huge veg fan to be honest. I don't dislike it and I eat it because it's good for you but there is not one vegetable that I couldn't do without. Same with fruit really, I'm just a bit "meh" about it.

I love fish and seafood. Especially salmon, tuna steaks and prawns.

DS will only eat fish in fish finger form. But he loves fruit and enjoys eating it way more than I do, especially berries.

silentcrow · 08/01/2019 21:22

Oh gods, the smell of tuna is the worst.

My best friend in high school brought tuna sandwiches for lunch every day. For five years. Needless to say tuna does not get near my shopping basket.

I do have that "I need to eat more vegetables BUT I don't like vegetables" issue, it's a real problem. My dad was such a fussy eater as a child that he'd never even eaten peas or pasta when my parents got married! So my palate was very restricted from the get-go, at a time when chocolate pudding Milupa was supposed to be the best thing to feed your baby. I only got to try new things when I moved to a uni in the middle of a city with both a big Chinatown and a vast array of Indian & Middle Eastern restaurants.

Thing is, even after trying lots of different things, I really loathe the entire brassica family. There's a particular chemical that not everyone can detect which makes these veg very bitter if you have the taste buds for it. I've forced myself into eating broccoli for more than ten years just to set a good example to the kids...turns out they didn't inherit that bitter perception from me and will trough the stuff alongside their dad every day!

Frustratingly I do like orange veg like sweet potatoes and squash, and guess what, the kids hate it. I can't win!

PookieDo · 08/01/2019 21:28

@JassyRadlett

You only took 1 part of my post
Some people do not eat vegetables as children and therefore do not eat them as adults. Vast sections of 1st world countries are raised on frozen or fast beige foods.

SerenDippitty · 08/01/2019 21:31

I don’t mind salmon, especially smoked, and I will very occasionally eat a bit of white fish, other than cod which makes me sick, literally. Hate any other fish.

steppemum · 08/01/2019 21:40

I LOVE FISH!

whole fried crunchy whitbait

fesh flaky deep fried cod in batter

mussels in a huge pan, still in sheels, with garlic butter/white wine sauce

tuna mayo sandwich

fresh salmon steak grilled with black pepper and butter.

smoked salmon. Neat actually, but OK, maybe with lemon and black pepper on granary bread.

fish pie. Made with white fish and yellow smoked and prawns and white sauce with mashed potato and cheese on top

prawn cocktail. proper 80s style.

squid, octopus, scallops, grilled, on the BBQ.

Bloody love it. It all tastes different. None of it shoudl taste salty.

to me, saying all fish is the same, is like saying all meat is the same, which I don't understand either. Lasagne made with mince beef is nothing like roast chicken!

PloddingOnwards · 08/01/2019 21:53

No your not ,
I've noticed that I have never been a fan of boiled carrots however I do love them raw and roasted , so I think it also depends on the way the veg has been cooked ect.

TheRealJoseph · 08/01/2019 21:57

Manx Kippers & Queenies bloody lovely.

Laverbread anyone?

steppemum · 08/01/2019 22:13

Oh, kippers, lovely, haven't had those for years.
Kedgeree too. Never managed ot make it myself, it always goes too claggy, but a good one is yum.

King prawns on the BBQ. mmm.

trailing a fishing line behind a boat on holiday, catching mackerel, gutting it, taking it hime and havign it fresh grilled for breakfast

aibutohavethisusername · 08/01/2019 22:18

I love fish & seafood (apart from mussels which I’m pretty sure I’m allergic to).
I love all veggies apart from celery & radishes.
I love all fruit.

I just don’t like meat.
