The Queen's Hair

The Queen stopped changing her hairstyle in the 70's, I think.
I have long wondered about it, because hair was really really bad in the 70's.
Did she just stop caring about what other people thought - "Fuck it, I'm the Queen"?

Or has it got to do with being recognisable? She on all the money, can hardly have a pixie cut on the 5 cent piece and a long bob on the 20c, can she.

Princess Anne has also been wearing the same hairstyle for decades. Is that's what's in store for Kate and Meghan?
I'd go mad if I couldn't change my hairstyle every now and again. But I don't have dozens of news outlets waiting to unleash their criticism of it.

"The point about old lady perms is persuasive, but no one really does them anymore, do they? Except the Queen and Princess Anne"

The hairdressers I (very rarely) go to is an "old lady" hairdressers. Only place in town that does perms still. I like it because she is a damn good cutter, LISTENS to what I ask for, and NOT scissor happy and cheap £10 for trim and blow dry

Whenever I go elsewhere they try and hard sell me to dye (happy to be naturally greying, I'm lucky that redheads tend to go silvery and the distribution means it rather looks like highlights) and go much shorter which is NOT what I want but I suffer from anxiety and they usually start this bollocks when your hairs already wet and you're cornered!

My mums hairdresser - I'd be surprised if they even knew how to do anything other than bobs!

Princess Anne's hair is bloody awful! That style has NEVER been in fashion! Shame because while I'm a republican I actually don't mind her I've even met her on a few occasions and while she takes no nonsense she seems a good person.

It looks like (and pics of her when young seem to back this up) it's thick and naturally wavy/curly. She suits it better longer and looser imo, but even if she hates the curl these days she could have it properly straightened. The style she favours looks like she's fought and brushed it into submission with no real thought beyond keeping it out the way!

I think the queen should go looser but use a simple updo. Let's be honest she's not doing it herself no reason why not. French knot, Gibson tuck and similar.

Anne should try a short style a little longer on top but not a full fringe.

Ladybrienne no idea what you're using to create those pics but I'd be very interested to see possible images of my ideas?

Just waiting for it to let me upload

Flyingfish2019 · 09/01/2019 20:28

What kind of Programme is it you do this with?
I want to try what a new hairstyle would look like on me.

LadyBrienne · 09/01/2019 20:47

It’s an app on the iPhone called Hairstyle

You upload photo and then just try stuff on

Thanks.

Flowers

BTW Updo 107/130 looks great on her.

Graphista · 09/01/2019 22:06

Thanks for doing that

I agree that ones the best but the others are good too if they were done more neatly.

LonelyAmongUs · 09/01/2019 22:17

Short 68/192 made me think of David Walliams

Deadbudgie · 09/01/2019 22:22

My mum has had the same hairstyle since before I was born similar to Queen’s. I’m 42!

FloorLamp · 09/01/2019 22:26

Haha!

Those have given me a right laugh and I really needed that tonight so thank you! Grin

nicoala1 · 09/01/2019 22:40

I am fascinated as to how the Q managed to go from dark brown to silver grey without anyone noticing the change!

I suppose she has marvellous hairdressers who eased the transition.

I would love to have silver hair. My cousin has it in her forties it is fab. But mine without a colour put in is just awful and dusty grey, if you get me!

Joinourclub · 09/01/2019 22:46

Thank you LadyBrienne they were brilliant!

GetYourRocksOff · 09/01/2019 22:49

Those pictures make this the best thread ever!!

FadedRed · 09/01/2019 22:54

LadyBrienne amazing photos, the first five make HM look thirty years younger! Not so keen on the other’s especially the longer styles.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/01/2019 22:58

I’m literally watching the episode of the Crown where she gets the famous do and can’t believe the timing of this thread!

Philip’s face... “I thought you wanted more children from me”.

Storminateacup1 · 09/01/2019 23:06

@LadyBrienne - Those pictures are bloody brilliant! I actually quite like the first medium length one on her. 😂

Ariela · 09/01/2019 23:12

My best friend from school's mum is 4 years older than the Queen and has also had exactly the same hairstyle as the Queen since I first met her when I was 4 (well over 50 years!). In fact when I first met her, I thought she was related to the Queen because she does look quite a lot like her and they lived in a very big posh house (well it SEEMED big at 4, it's average actually), I was always in awe - and still am actually she is an awesome lady, still in the same house although on her own now, does her own cooking/laundry/shopping/& much of the gardenening (has a gardener for the mowing and hedges) although she has a cleaner/helper who does a few chores like changing bedlinen, cleans the bathrooms and does all the hoovering.

She's always dressed immaculately, shoes match bag, jacket matches skirt, a colour in her top matches trousers, and the jewellery always picks up on a colour she is wearing that kind of thing. Her hair has a golden rinse, she curls and styles it herself, but has a perm every now and then, her makeup is timelessly flawless, not overdone and not HD brows but neat and not a hair out of place (she was blonde) and you'd never, ever guess she was in her mid 90s. Makes me look scruffy even on a good day.

DropZoneOne · 09/01/2019 23:15

She stopped dying it in 1990 apparently. If you look at the photos in 1989 at the queen mother's birthday, you can see the grey at her temples (and for a couple of years prior). By Christmas 1990, it's dark grey with silver bits. It's got gradually lighter until it's pure white now.

I think having it short and regularly wearing hats helped ease the transition!

In terms of style, if you look at pictures of her as a child, she had curly hair. I reckon it wasn't the easiest to tame and she was encouraged into a style not too dissimilar to her mother's to keep it manageable with tiaras etc.

scissorsandpen · 09/01/2019 23:18

I get sticking with a hairstyle that suits you but I don’t think the queen does esp the rolled up top bit - been asking myself same question for years

MarthaArthur · 09/01/2019 23:21

I've had the same hair cut my entire life i dont understand why anyone would keep bothering changing their hair.

Plus isnt her hair (like mine) naturally curly? So theres only so much you can do with it anyway. I think her hair is lovely and find her very beahtiful.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 10/01/2019 00:16

I had my hair cut into a bob as a child I then let It grow and only ever had it trimmed since.

Iv had the same hairstyle for at least 20 years and don't plan on ever changing it.

LadyBrienne · 10/01/2019 05:31

Glad you all thought the pictures were a hoot too - they certainly had me chuckling away as I was doing them

I always assumed she didn’t change her hair style / do anything different with it as she didn’t want the media to talk about her hair / appearance rather than the cause or occasion - all the media do is say “the queen is looking regal in vibrant green” (or whatever color) and then talk about why she is there - they never say “well she’s looking a bit weighty” or “she’s trying bangs and it doesn’t look good” etc etc

Do you remember the fuss when Diana wore an up-do? I remember all the papers headlines saying “let your hair down Di”
