AIBU to think that rental costs are outrageous?

My DF recently moved to be nearby to help me out as a single mum to my DS, following a change in our circumstances. He's not in the best of health and has just been given notice to quit at the end of his fixed term 6 month tenancy due to a change in the landlord's circumstances. I'm upset on his behalf - he just seems to never get much luck in life - and think it's a shit way to treat people. However, the law is the law, people have changes to their circumstances - I get that. What really irks me though is the amount that letting agents get away with charging for pre-tenancy checks. Coupled with removal costs, it's another big chunk of cash only 6 months after the last move. AIBU to think that if it is going to be so easy for landlords to evict tenants, letting agents should have their ability to charge for referencing capped?

The trouble is that if they cap that, they’ll boost their charges elsewhere and those will inevitably be passed on to the tenant still.

Are there any other houses with the same letting agency?
When I've had to leave after 6 months I was able to choose another house with the same agents and didn't have to pay the referencing fees again.
