I would never name a child Mia = missing in action. Or Cameron, what if she marries a guy named Cameron and then she is called Cameron Cameron?
Or Claudia because it means “one who is lame“ in Latin.

@DrPeppersPhD surprised only GOT made you hate the name Circe...she's not exactly pleasant in The Odyssey either! Would you really want to be named after someone who's essentially a date rapist?!

The story of Cassandra is not exactly cheerful either...

DrPeppersPhD · 09/01/2019 14:12

Also Alan. Known one nice Alan, the rest have been twunts.

DrPeppersPhD · 09/01/2019 14:24

@Angelil
Good point, well made. I meant more in terms of if I called my daughter Circe now it would be more assumed that I'd named her after the queen of mean (who I actually kind of like, at least in the first book). One of those, love it as a name, wouldn't work in context scenarios.
You're right Cassandra wasn't exactly cheerful, but not many were really were they? Makes me think more of Cassandra from DA than the original story.

Cardiffclare88 · 09/01/2019 14:47

@Ariesgirl88, I’m really not a bully (Maybe only applies to other spelling Wink)

SpotBottle · 09/01/2019 15:39

Honey is a hideous name but possibly because I knew a child called Honey (actually hyphenated to Honey-Blossom Hmm) and she was a truly awful child.

Satsumaeater · 09/01/2019 15:59

Lisa. I had a "friend" at school called Lisa who was a bit of a cow.

And a boss called Lisa who was a lot of a cow.

And for a boy I don't think I would choose Adolf...

Also like names that are obviously male or female and that you only spell one way.

Also don't like Ida or Ada or Florence - all sound like my great-great-aunt's generation

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/01/2019 16:26

Any name with a ridiculous 'alternative' spelling. It's not alternative, it's just spelt incorrectly. Hmm

12fromcold · 09/01/2019 16:29

What about Stuart/Stewart?

12fromcold · 09/01/2019 16:29

Or Jeff/Geoff?

12fromcold · 09/01/2019 16:29

Amy/Aimee
John/Jon

12fromcold · 09/01/2019 16:30

Oh oh Mathew/Matthew

CoughLaughFart · 09/01/2019 16:45

I think someone else mentioned Virginia earlier. Why in the name of sanity would you pick it?! ‘I know what will make life easy for my little girl - a name that sounds like both virgin and vagina!’

DameSquashalot · 09/01/2019 17:21

I quite like Edith. I love Imogen and Victor too and some of the others that people hate. 😊

Hortonlovesahoo · 09/01/2019 17:29

I try to avoid names which could be misspelt like:
Clare /Claire
Hannah / Hanna
Sarah / Sara
Mark / Marc

Mainly because I've spelt my entire life having to spell out my name to people and it annoys me

DameSquashalot · 09/01/2019 17:33

I also love Hannah.

Some of the lists have made me chuckle though.

blueskiesandforests · 09/01/2019 17:54

I don't like Poppy and Lily because I associate both flowers strongly with death.

I assumed most people did and was very surprised when those names became very popular a few years ago.

I think a daisy is a tenacious little flower with no morbid association, but couldn't call a child Daisy because of the cow association ... So no flower names!

Clionba · 09/01/2019 18:03

I know a woman called Sara-jane. It really annoys me that the second part doesn't have a capital letter! I always want to use J not j.

Turquoisetamborine · 09/01/2019 18:05

I loved the name James but my Mam asked me to use any name other than that one as that was her abusive father’s name (didn’t think as he was known as Jimmy).

Lovely name though.

JacintaJones · 09/01/2019 18:36

Barnaby
Derek
Nigel
Ian
Zane
Zack
Troy

Candice
Rachael
Nicola
Susan
Olivia
Jane
Gail
Danielle
Amelie
Casey
Alison

I just don't like any of them.

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 09/01/2019 18:49

Ha! DD's name on here several times already.
Needlessly complex spellings that have nothing to do with the name's origins. So I don't mind Niamh or Siobhan (apart from historical aversion to name because of horrible Siobhan I worked with once), but Tiaghann, for instance, would annoy me. Ditto Jaxxon or Emhilleagh (pronounced Emily?)

Calling a child after a character in a book that is referred to by their nickname - e.g. Scout, Boo, Skeeter - as their given name. Irritates me far more than it ought to. Also averse to cutesy names - what happens to a 50 year old dentist called Daisy-Boo?

Completely agree with Orabelle and Senna - poor kids!

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 09/01/2019 19:09

Jesus if one more name gets listed on I’ve got the full set.

Clionba · 09/01/2019 19:26

Jesus!
That's a nice name Wink

MsTSwift · 09/01/2019 19:52

Same Rowena Grin still I put my own opinions down so I guess if I dish it out I have to be able to take it!

Flyingfish2019 · 09/01/2019 20:19

I think Jesus is a very popular name in Portugal.
