I would never name a child Mia = missing in action. Or Cameron, what if she marries a guy named Cameron and then she is called Cameron Cameron?
Or Claudia because it means “one who is lame“ in Latin.

A girl at school was constantly picked on and renamed Scabby Gabby by bullies. Always detested the name after that.

Loved Iris but work in a medical field and hated seeing it in textbooks so ruled that out.

I’ve also met a Jaxon and even worse a Jaxson Hmm

Lalotai47 · 07/01/2019 21:51

Graham. It sounds like Grey Ham. Knew an awful one.

Rachel. Was bullied by one.

Gemma. Yet to meet a nice one.

Odd spellings. We know a Lukkus. Poor kid.

Jensen. Just hate it.

Weird American names like Hank or Randy!

Flora. Makes me think of bacteria.

Florence. Shortened to Flo which makes me think of periods.

Clionba · 07/01/2019 21:51

I like the names Romily and Ingrid. I also like Verity.
David and Victoria Coren Mitchell called their baby Barbara. I don't know if that will be popular again.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 07/01/2019 21:51

Henry. It was the name of the paedophile who made my mum suffer at his hands for all of her childhood.

Lalotai47 · 07/01/2019 21:52

Lots of hate for Jaxon on here. It just makes me think of gorgeous Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy! So I like it.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 07/01/2019 21:58

@19lottie82 Cosmo/Cosimo is a very standard Italian name and is popular in the US too. If your friend has no connection to Italy I can understand you might be a bit surprised but it's not "out there" at all for us.

MyHeartIsBrokeButIHaveSomeGlue · 07/01/2019 21:59

Beau. For a girl 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

CoughLaughFart · 07/01/2019 22:00

My mother always hated the name Lauren. No idea why. Then my flatmate at uni told me she’d always loved the name Lauren until she met a Lauren who was ‘so ugly it was cruel she wasn’t drowned at birth’ Grin I also met an (almost) famous Lauren and she was vile. Funnily enough that combination has put me off for life!

I loved Kieran for a boy until I worked with one who really offended me. I was doubly pissed off because I ‘lost’ the name.

Also, Kelly. It makes me think of a slightly dim work experience girl who tries hard but makes everything worse.

henfam · 07/01/2019 22:01

Chavvy
Pretentious
Badly spelt
Cute
Overused (which is a shame as I feel we can no longer use a family name).
My neighbour called her dd Maisy. Cutsie AND spelt wrong. Another has one where the first name rhymes with the surname.
I worry that some people just don't like their children!
No idea what to call ours, I think I just ruled everything out 😁

RedToothBrush · 07/01/2019 22:02

Persephone.

Ugh.

Speaking of Lana...

When I was pregnant I loved Aurelia (we had a boy).

However DH keep saying no, I prefer Aurelie. And wondered why I said NO WAY.

He chucked mercilessly at the Ophelia we met at a baby group for not dissimilar reasons.

Also see Richard. Just no.

More generally anything you have to ask how it's pronounced if there is more than one common version.

And Irish names that make no sense to my ignorant eyes. Please let me be able to sound it out if I'm unfamiliar with it.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/01/2019 22:02

I’ve never met someone called Nicola who isn’t an absolute fucking bitch

Mummylife2018 · 07/01/2019 22:02

My daughter's name is Mackenzie. I've always been against different than traditional names but this one just stuck. Despite my best efforts at finding an alternative, there was nothing quite the same. Now, I can't imagine her being anything other than mummy's little Kenzie-Boo!

I know I'll get funny faces and comments on here but she really does suit it. I expected to get loads of remarks about it when she started school, but everyone has always said "Awwwww what a pretty name!"

Snog · 07/01/2019 22:04

I'm with @Shodan, I don't like names that start with a K
Sorry Kardashians

RedToothBrush · 07/01/2019 22:06

Oh and 'King and Queen names'

George Henry Elizabeth Mary Anne James

Hate them all.

turncloak · 07/01/2019 22:07

I used to work in a vets. Owners giving their cats and dogs 'human' names has now put me off certain (perfectly nice) names for life - Poppy, Alfie and Molly especially, as those cropped up multiple times a day. When I encounter children with these names in real life I can't help but think 'Labradoodle.'

I know a Bexley and shudder every single time I hear it.

Agree about Edith being an ugly name, and I'm usually a big fan old 'old lady' style names. I presume its rise in popularity can be traced back to Downton Abbey, but I find it hideous.

horsesheep · 07/01/2019 22:08

Gertrude and Bert

CoughLaughFart · 07/01/2019 22:09

Any name that can also be a personality trait. A friend of mine once said she’d never met a Joy who wasn’t a miserable bitch Grin

Birdsgottafly · 07/01/2019 22:11

"it seems odd having an 8 month old and 80 year old with the same name"

That would be most names then.

It's fine to not like 'wrong' spellings, as long as you know they are actually wrong and it's not you who has very limited knowledge.

I like hearing different names.

I like the African people that I know called, Mercy, Innocent, Riches, Wisdom, Blessing etc.

Makes life interesting.

I wasn't sure about a local family with the Surname White, calling their DD, Snow. I've just looked her up on FB, on the basis of this thread and she's kept it. So it mustn't bother her.

FastnetLundyRockall · 07/01/2019 22:20

For some reason I really dislike the name Hannah. It's just an inoffensive nothing sort of name.

Fightthebear · 07/01/2019 22:21

Balonz - or Data, for that matter.

Beat me to it!

Ngaio2 · 07/01/2019 22:26

The sound of Archie puts my teeth on edge.
Seth is just too hard to say, especially if you want to put expression into your voice.
Some posters have criticised Amelie as being mosh mash of Amelia Emily etc but it’s actually the French version of Amelia.

FayFortune · 07/01/2019 22:27

To me Seth is a gamekeeper having a pint at the Malt Shovel.

DammitOedipus · 07/01/2019 22:29

Albie, Alfie, Teddy
Daisy, Poppy, Dottie

The baby won't be a baby forever!

Also Josephine. Not sure why, I just really don't like it.

CoffeeRunner · 07/01/2019 22:32

Names I would never use:

Lydia - apart from the fact I’ve never met one I like, it sounds as though you have more lids than anyone else.

Alice - twee & feeble.

Grace - as per Alice.

Nina - nee nar, nee nar. Police siren.

And Lana - yes - now that I’ve seen it’s anal backwards it’s put me right off!

Boys names:

Louis.

Archie - arch like?

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 07/01/2019 22:34

I love Mackenzie !!!!

Justin. ....wet and soppy sounding...Justin Time Grin
