To be surprised that some friends are buying extra food because of Brexit?

I suspect that specific foods may get be in short supply for a short period of time, but there will still be plenty of food in the shops. It is not going to be Armageddon. So this seemed an over reaction to me. Or am I going to be that person in the disaster movie who is laughing saying everyone is over reacting, who ends up dead when the disaster finally hits?

This is a general prepper thing so don't freak out if you aren't a prepper Grin:
I get mine from the Lucky Vitamin website. If you are running really low and have a project, Kilner Jars of a similar type to Ball jars are on Amazon.
For storage rather than canning, I generally use cleaned sterilised reused jars that had pasta sauce in them or whatever.

wildchild554 · 14/01/2019 18:06

I also used the pasta jars with the pop lids for jams, pickling and tomatoe sauce :) But will take a look at that site thankyou :) Planning on doing chicken and mince next :)

@wildchild554 , we might freak people out if we have a prepper discussion on this thread. Happy to discuss on Preppers topic obviously Smile

wildchild554 · 14/01/2019 18:20

@bellinisurge I honestly don't see why it should freak anyone out discussing preserving methods ;) Do you use a food saver too? I have one and the jar adaptations so ensure no air in with my dehydrated produce. Also means my nuts keep longer :)

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 18:27

Yep @wildchild554 . I'm on as many Brexit prep threads as I can be trying to give advice to non-Preppers. Every now and again, I get someone having a go at prepping and accusing anyone who even thinks of buying an extra tin of beans a scaremongering cause of all the UK's problems Grin.
For people like you (I'm guessing) and me, canning and dehydrating is just what we do.
For others it's a terrifying symbol of red neck destruction.

Yes I have been following it and I also think Parliament won't allow no Deal.

I don't understand what this means. If the deal that's been agreed by May is rejected, how is a deal going to be magiced up? I've been amazed that the EU have been as obliging as they've been, in the face of all sorts of insults. I think most other EU countries just want it over and done with, it's just a nuisance.

wildchild554 · 14/01/2019 19:13

@bellinisurge
'redneck destruction' lol
I've been called a crazy hippy before now, just see it as a form of insurance, what we have we use anyway, we get it cheaper than others do as we stocked up when it was cheaper, and growing some of our own means we get better quality food as well, can't get fresher than a few metres away :) It's helped us out when times have been tight. To me it's not scaremongering it's common sense.

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 19:42

I agree with you wildchild.

Juells, there is not a parliamentary consensus for no Deal as an option. It seems that MPs will come up with whatever legislative amendments that it takes to stop us crashing out.
What they are, I don't know.
But I prepare for the worst while I hope for the best.

'Brexit boxes': Hundreds sold as Britons stock up for no-deal food supply disruption
Boxes contain one-month supply of freeze-dried food for emergencies

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2019 21:12

By the way...

Here's the shortcut to the 'stockpiling' section of the independent

And here's the one that links to all the stories tagged under 'food shortages'

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 21:15

Again, please don't get suckered into buying a Brexit box. Unless you can dictate what's in it, the chances of it containing stuff that suits your family are very slim. And really dull.

wildchild554 · 14/01/2019 21:18

Also the fact it be cheaper to stock up on tinned etc for one month supply, you don't have to heat food either as it's already cooked

WellBHoise · 14/01/2019 23:23

Was also coming on to say “what the actual fuck is a hamster list?”
Also note to self, add random swear word to every post from now on. Bastarding journalists.

WellBHoise · 14/01/2019 23:41

@bellinisurge
What would you recommend as a basic water filtration system? Something cheapish and a low key back up, in case of loss of water for a day or two etc? Also had a peek at those brexit boxes for fun, it’s like tins with 12 portions of the same thing. Not going to be so good by day 6 once opened!

bellinisurge · 15/01/2019 06:25

It's really unlikely that Brexit will result in water supply problems.

But here's what I have in place anyway as a general prepper. Again, nothing to do with Brexit, just me: water purification tablets. Filter collected water through an old T-shirt or whatever to get out big bits. [Just popping in again for journalists to say I don't expect this for Brexit]Then use water purification tablets. Cheap of Amazon. Also/instead- boil water at a hard boil for a couple of minutes. I also have a couple of lifestraws. Again, do not expect to need this because of Brexit.
There are fancy Berkey water filters but I am too cheap to invest in them. [Again, don't anticipate water shortages for Brexit]. And I have some bottles-maybe 10- of cheap mineral water from Aldi.
Where I live, we got hit by those horrible moorland fires in the summer and so, despite living in a rainy country, it had me thinking a bit more about water supply generally.

AnotherShirtRuined · 15/01/2019 06:57

Maybe we should all adopt WellBHoise's idea of adding random swearwords to every post, particularly if the slightest bit controversial like suggestions of any type of preparation for anything Hmm Barstarding, lazy journalists.

Are we moving to a new thread - not much left on this one. Any offers?

bellinisurge · 15/01/2019 07:22

Not me, I'm a bastard evil 👿 scaremongerer who's panicking about avocados GrinGrin😹😹😹😹😹

wildchild554 · 15/01/2019 07:29

@bellinisurge can also get collapsible 10 litre water container bags on amazon. I have a couple I keep filled in case my pipes freeze

Member745520 · 15/01/2019 07:36

Never mind. I still luffs yer. Grin Brew (Too early for Gin )

Member745520 · 15/01/2019 08:03

And my waking thought this morning was whether I should post instructions for making 'dampers' on a camp fire - recalled from my Guiding days several generations ago where you wound the dough strips around a peeled green willow stick and cooked the bread over the fire. Possibly they could be bartered as painkillers too as they would surely have absorbed some salicylic acid from the willow?

Ah well. Good luck to all of us on this thread whatever our persuasion...
