To be surprised that some friends are buying extra food because of Brexit?

I suspect that specific foods may get be in short supply for a short period of time, but there will still be plenty of food in the shops. It is not going to be Armageddon. So this seemed an over reaction to me. Or am I going to be that person in the disaster movie who is laughing saying everyone is over reacting, who ends up dead when the disaster finally hits?

I've been doing the opposite of scaremongering on here on an almost daily basis. In fact I have been telling people to calm the fuck down and have been offering practical tips about building a 3 day buffer of food in. I have been up front in all of them about being a prepper and have been telling people you don't need to be a prepper.
But if that is your definition of scaremongering, I can't help you.

SalrycLuxx · 14/01/2019 12:40

It’s ok Bellini - it can join the new definitions of ‘bloodcurdling’ and ‘panic’

We’re could to need to laugh the Mumsnet dictionary TM at this rate.

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 12:56

Thanks @SalrycLuxx . I'm sure everyone is more than fed up with me trotting out my "3 day pantry buffer" tips. To be then accused of being a scaremongering is a bit rich.

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 13:05

Found my own thread thanks @Clavinova , thanks to google. The latest post on that was August 2018.
Maybe you haven't noticed but there have been dozens of threads since then specifically about prepping for Brexit rather than prepping generally. On which I have contributed what I hope are sensible bits of advice about calming the fuck down and doing something practical and proportionate. Threads Started by people who aren't me. Maybe you should do a tad more research on Mumsnet before slinging silly accusations around.

The French tried to feed us horsemeat only 5 years ago.

Wow. Pretty unpleasant bit of national stereotyping there.

Extra meal saves frail patients

Hospitals cut the number of deaths among elderly patients with a fractured hip by half simply by appointing a staff member to give them extra food.

A pilot scheme at five NHS trusts in England and one in Scotland involved an extra junior member of staff for each ward who was given the job of keeping patients well fed. They were given a target of boosting intake of food by 500 calories a day, equivalent to about one meal.

Since the trial began two years ago the proportion of elderly patients who died within 30 days of a hip fracture has fallen from 11 per cent to 5.5 per cent

"Lets bring back rationing!" they said... "It will solve the national obseity crisis!" they said...

HolySwearingCuss · 14/01/2019 13:43

I'm glad they're running that trial.

My Nan died after she went into hospital and went from "pretty independent" to "very vulnerable" fast because she couldn't physically lift the cups or plates that were brought to her to eat or drink, and they just took them away again.

Someone in charge of making her eat might have given her years.

AnotherShirtRuined · 14/01/2019 13:45

Those with no intention of stocking up for Brexit, do you also never take advantage of any offers? This is actually a genuine question as to me that is pretty much the same thing. I consider myself a prepper 'lite' in that I like to be organised and prepared in case of whatever may be likely to occur whether that be snow, power cuts, or, indeed, Brexit. I also pack snacks when out and about with the kids.

I also try to be as frugal as possible and stock up when stuff is on offer; and seeing as even the most conservative of MPs expect further devaluation of the pound, food prices will rise (more than they already have) and a well-stocked larder, etc., means that my finances may take a smaller hit than they otherwise would have. This, of course, is quite apart from any supply chain issues. So even if you don't expect any food shortages not stocking up makes absolutely no sense to me, from a purely financial standpoint.

One final thing, I for one am very grateful for @bellinisurge's measured and helpful advice, both on this thread and on the prepper boards.

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 13:54

Thank you @AnotherShirtRuined

Most major supermarkets already use chicken from parts of South America Brazil in particular and Asia. They Have done for a long time. Iceland and Tescos are shops I've noticed use a lot of this for their frozen food.

She wasn't very measured in her unwarranted insults to me on Friday.
And she jumped in on this thread 2 minutes after I posted - without reading what I was responding to. Just because I didn't respond with any reciprocal insults last week she thought I was a pushover.

Another yes I always stock up when things are on offer. My original point was I wasn't going to do a big panicky preppy shop because of Brexit.
Tesco for example will just get all their meat from elsewhere, already very little of their-butchers choice range is from the EU and yet it's one of their best sellers. Sadly a vast number of shoppers don't give a shit where their meat comes from as long as it's cheap.

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2019 14:47

Oh right so that you are worldly and understand international trade and provisions in public safety because you had a great great grand uncle who was might have happened to be German.

Good stuff.

As long as you know you can win an argument by trotting out nonsense we are all good.

It won't change what happens if the Government preparations for no deal are not fit for purpose due to a failure to understand systems and we aren't ready for system problems come 30th March.

But hey, that's the fault of political correctness.

As long as we know where we stand, that's all good.

TheElementsSong · 14/01/2019 15:12

I always stock up when things are on offer.

But that means you are causing a shortage of things two months later on (exclamation marks), what are you some kind of selfish panicking maniac?

AnotherShirtRuined · 14/01/2019 15:12

@cushioncovers Even if stocking up now is essentially the same as taking advantage of offers due to the inevitable increasing prices come Brexit? I'm not talking panic buying here, simply a cushion of food, toiletries, etc., bought now - in January - to soften any financial hit later in the year.

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2019 15:15

Hester, in all honesty.

Good.

AnotherShirtRuined · 14/01/2019 15:30

Seriously, The Sun, why are you ridiculing MNetters for stocking up on stuff like water, food, and medicines, while simultaneously recommending stocking up on water, food, and medicines? Confused

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jan/14/i-dont-trust-the-government-to-look-after-me-or-my-dog-meet-the-brexit-stockpilers

Anything not needed for Brexit can be eaten later or given to a food bank.

For folks to learn how the food supply system works
puts them one up on Dominic Raab
and better prepared in general

bellinisurge · 14/01/2019 15:32

Anything to get a published article for the cv. We'll get more of that.
I don't care as long as it makes some people think about their particular situation.

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2019 15:35

No one ever quotes me.

Why?

tilts head

HolySwearingCuss · 14/01/2019 15:37

Wtf is a "hamster list"? I'd swear I've never heard of that before on here?

AnotherShirtRuined · 14/01/2019 15:38

Well, I feel immensely proud to have been quoted by a reputable newspaper like The Sun Hmm @RedToothBrush
