My 17 yo is doing A levels first year (sept birthday),
He’s asked me to buy him some new trainers they are wrecked, I Have no issue with providing for his wardrobe whilst being at school but here comes the aibu I bought him a brand new pair of converse for our summer holiday in July and ore for two weeks never seen since. I don’t want to buy him more shoes when he has perfectly durable shoes at hand
He doesn’t have a part time job, usually wears primark,H&M clothes (unlike our 14 year old) so I don’t mind paying for things but feel whilst he has a perfectly functioning pair of trainers I am not going to go out and buy him new for the sake of it, it if matters Ds1 has a disability so we have a small amount of disability benefit for him

Converse aren't really suitable for winter.

At 17 they are still a child so yes I'd provide everything they needed and wouldn't expect them to work to fund their own clothes. It's a parenting basic.

Thehop · 06/01/2019 21:49

Hmmm I’d buy them. Converse aren’t trainers, more a summer pump.

PUGaLUGS · 06/01/2019 21:51

I would consider Converse summer wear tbh.

Futureisland · 06/01/2019 21:53

I think it's reasonable to have more than one pair of trainers at a time. Are they for sport or general use? Maybe find out why he didn't wear them and take it from there.

BackforGood · 06/01/2019 21:54

I would consider converse Summer wear too, but my teens don't.
I have a 17 yr old Yr12 too. When I suggest the wearing of something a bit more hardy for the Winter, I get a raised eyebrow and out they go in what I hear my mother's voice coming out of my mouth "flimsy pumps" Grin

lily2403 · 06/01/2019 21:55

Converse are not winter trainers, his feet will be freezing

ggirl · 06/01/2019 21:56

I would buy him new trainers

needanappp · 06/01/2019 22:00

Why is he only allowed one pair of trainers at a time? Also agree that converse are not really winter wear.

TheBigBangRocks · 06/01/2019 22:01

whilst he has a perfectly functioning pair of trainers I am not going to go out and buy him new for the sake of it

Converse aren't functionable in winter though, canvas is cold and not always waterproof.

All adults have tap water but still buy juice/alcohol/fizzy pop etc.

How can you begrudge him a pair of trainers for winter?

bionicnemonic · 06/01/2019 22:04

Converse, although appealing, apparently aren’t that supportive or comfortable either

TokenGinger · 06/01/2019 22:07

I don't wear converse in this weather. They end up soaked through in a bit of rain.

I also think anybody should have more than one pair of shoes at a time.

theworldistoosmall · 06/01/2019 22:09

I find converse very, very uncomfortable.
Buy him some actual trainers not fabric useless for winter things

Crazycakelady17 · 06/01/2019 22:14

Okay I feel the consensus is to buy him new I will take him out tomorrow (off sixth form) and have lunch and buy him some new trainers

Topseyt · 06/01/2019 22:17

I'd call converse a spring or summer canvas pump.

It might be a good idea to get him a pair of heavier duty trainers suitable for winter. If he wants anything else over and above that then he has to either find a way to fund it himself or make do with what he had until it suits you.

MiniMum97 · 06/01/2019 22:55

I wear converse all year round. And would only buy my DS one pair of trainers at a time.

Beansandcoffee · 06/01/2019 22:59

My teenagers only have one pair of trainers at s time. At nearly £100 a pair I’m not buying anymore for them. Mine don’t like converse either so perhaps they have gone out of fashion for your teenager.

GobblersKnob · 06/01/2019 23:02

We all wear converse all year round (addicts) though the kids don't wear them to school.

crocsaretoocoolforschool · 06/01/2019 23:41

Why on earth does he need the day off to get trainers?

No out of town shopping centre or retail park near you?

Strawbberrypineapple · 06/01/2019 23:44

I think OP meant hes off from sixth form tomoro.

crocsaretoocoolforschool · 06/01/2019 23:50

Doh!

I knew I should have gone to bed earlier Grin

BackforGood · 06/01/2019 23:50

crocs - 1st day of term, likely to be an INSET day, so he is 'off school' is how I'd read that Grin

BackforGood · 06/01/2019 23:50

CurlyMango · 07/01/2019 16:49

And I have converse on now, as I did yesterday and will tomorrow. It’s not that cold, there fine.
