To take DD(5) swimming with a temp of 38.5?

Just that. She’s fine in herself, if a bit quiet, and says she wants to go.
The temperature is down from 39.5 with calpol.

I definitely wouldn't take her!

Allfednonedead · 06/01/2019 10:18

Well, that’s me told.
She really is fine in herself, though. Her normal temperature is actually 38, so I expect her fevers to run high. And they’re always done quickly.

SoyDora · 06/01/2019 10:20

But why risk it for the sake of going swimming?
And she might be fine in herself, and her fever be over quickly, but what about the people she’s likely to pass it on to?

Wolfiefan · 06/01/2019 10:20

Her fevers? And when she passes it on or vomits in the pool? Think of someone else eh?

newplacenofriends · 06/01/2019 10:23

I used to be a lifeguard. I lost track of the amount of times someone would take an ill child to the pool, the child would d&v and then the pool they d&v in (and any pool that shares the same water filter) would need to ve shut for 48 hours.

chumbal · 06/01/2019 10:24

If she is fine why have you even taken her temperature?

Angry
Allfednonedead · 06/01/2019 10:56

chumbal, it’s very obvious when this one has a temperature- she’s hot to touch from head to toe.
But normally she’ll say she feels ill and go to sleep. That didn’t happen this time, which is why I stupidly thought she might be fine to go swimming.

Funny I was wondering about this this morning too. DS feverish all night, Calpol has helped this morning but I've still cancelled our plans to visit family. It's not very exciting sitting at home all day but he probably needs down time and don't want to pass it on/don't want him to pick up anything else while his immune system is low.

Grumpbum123 · 06/01/2019 11:04

It’s threads like this that make me think some Mumsnet members live in their own bubble.
No even if her normal temp runs at 38, which strange alone I’d look at a new thermometer. No one is going to feel great when she spikes again having been swimming.

MamaLovesMango · 06/01/2019 11:05

Would you like to go swimming with a fever?

Kids a weird. They don’t show illness like adults. They don’t know how to communicate it properly and they are often able to communicate it sometimes but not others and so we never really know what’s going on. However, you have some pretty hard evidence she’s unwell - she has a temperature. Contagion risk aside, I’d just want to get my child better which means rest and fluids.

MamaLovesMango · 06/01/2019 11:06

Is there a reason why her temp is always 38?

Munchyseeds · 06/01/2019 11:08

Just give it a miss today....stay home and watch a movie
It's not rocket science!

Haworthia · 06/01/2019 11:10

Her normal temp cannot be 38.

Allfednonedead · 06/01/2019 11:15

She has a higher than usual core temp, just like I have a lower than usual temp (35.7-36.2 is normal for me).
I would totally go swimming with a fever.
I would treat my other D.C. differently, but this one is always extremely good at communicating her needs, so when she said she wanted to go swimming, I believed her.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 06/01/2019 11:20

She might want to go swimming but it's not a good idea. Not even just for infecting everyone else, she may well feel a whole lot worse afterwards...

MamaLovesMango · 06/01/2019 11:22

I would totally go swimming with a fever.

Oh well then, fuck anybody else that might be in the pool that contracts an illness from you then Hmm

OracleofDelphi · 06/01/2019 11:25

Well I think you’ve been told what other people think already ..... but I wouldn’t because you have no idea what is causing it ... it could be d/v which will just be hideous, or something like an ear infection toon which will get worse. I try to not even get mine to shower, because the “shock” of the temperature change makes them go all pale and shivery ..... I would just let her rest but if you have to go out a walk round a park or a scoot on a scooter much better as you can ditch it all fairly easily.

I too would be v surprised at a core temp of 38, and suggest it is unlikely .... yours is lower (mine is like that) but I thought that is far more common than a hotter one ....

Grace212 · 06/01/2019 11:26

OP why would you go swimming with a fever?

kaytee87 · 06/01/2019 11:29

Sudden high temperature when previously feeling ok indicates the flu. Fever is usually the first symptom.

No, don't go swimming with an ill child.

NancyJoan · 06/01/2019 11:31

You don’t know what she might be hatching. Keep her home.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/01/2019 11:32

Am I the only person who has no idea what my or my DCs' usual temperature is Confused

I cannot think of anything I'd do less willingly with a temperature than go swimming.

SoyDora · 06/01/2019 11:33

You still haven’t acknowledged the risk to other people though?

Darkbaptism · 06/01/2019 11:35

She may feel fine but risking passing the illness on to someone else is very selfish.

Oysterbabe · 06/01/2019 11:36

It's no wonder my kids are always fucking ill when no one gives a shit about passing their viruses on.

AppleBlossomArseCheeks · 06/01/2019 11:39

Nope definetely not, could be the start of anything and make her extremely ill and maybe even pass on to everyone at the pool
