I'm one of the 28% who didn't vote. Anyone else?

I think it's safer to admit you didn't vote than to admit you voted Leave on Mumsnet, by the look of the Brexit threads! :)

linziepie · 05/01/2019 13:52

There is a Brexit forum.

@Amorea Haha, true!

@linziepie I know, but it's slower and I like AIBU. Please don't feel you have to participate.

Me. I was on holiday with my family so none of us voted. We all would have voted remain as well but it seemed to be the general consensus in our circle that there is no way we would leave.

I regret it big time now Sad

Another family member didn’t vote because he didn’t think he knew enough of the facts and I think there were quite a few like him.

WeAreTheCrystalGems · 05/01/2019 13:55

@Mrsr8 Not too bad thanks. I can't change it after all, so not a lot of point in crying about it now.

StoorieHoose · 05/01/2019 13:55

Well since you didn’t vote you can’t complain how shit it is going to get

HalfBloodPrincess · 05/01/2019 13:55

Me neither. I’m not politically minded or knowledgeable (my degrees are in the sciences) and so based my decision to not vote on the probability of lies from each camp.

WeAreTheCrystalGems · 05/01/2019 13:56

@Motherof Dragons90 Yeah, the polls have often been misleading recently :(

OP posts:
WeAreTheCrystalGems · 05/01/2019 13:57

@StoorieHoose I guess so!

@HalfBloodPrincess Totally agree. I didn't believe a thing I was hearing from either side - either bluster or hyperbole.

I think it should they should have made it so 50% of all eligible voters had to vote for leave - so the non voters would have counted as remain.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/01/2019 13:58

Those that don't vote shouldn't complain about the result whether it be this or a GE.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/01/2019 14:00

You can't assume the votes of those that don't vote. Hmm

Vote or don't vote but if you don't don't complain about the result. 🤷🏼‍♀️

WeAreTheCrystalGems · 05/01/2019 14:02

@Piglet Yeah, I know. However, I kind of anticipate ... not much changing. Just a feeling, clearly.

HalfBloodPrincess · 05/01/2019 14:03

I’m not complaining. As someone who would have had to do hours and hours of research to even come up with a layman’s view of what could possibly be the truth, I have no right to. I still don’t completely understand, but I do know that we will never get the whole true picture, so I’ll just take what’s coming on the chin and deal with it.

easyandy101 · 05/01/2019 14:04

I didn't vote.

I disagreed with there being a referendum and I've never voted in a general or local as I don't like fptp

MotherOfDragons90 · 05/01/2019 14:16

@Piglet normally, I agree. But with something like this I think a non vote means you are happy with things how they are. If you want to actively change something on this scale then you have to get up and vote for it.

At the end of the day if only 60 people out of 100 vote, and 30 vote to leave that is still only a third of the population actively wanting to leave.

HalfBloodPrincess · 05/01/2019 14:19

My non vote meant I was happy to go along with the majority who did vote.

x2boys · 05/01/2019 14:26

Marvellous idea Mother so next time a vote doesn't go the way we like it it,we will just assume the non voters ,would have voted for the preferred Party?Hmm

MotherOfDragons90 · 05/01/2019 14:29

No like I said, normally it wouldn’t work.

But I think this was a very unique kettle of fish because of the lack of facts.

x2boys · 05/01/2019 14:31

So just make it up as you to along basically until you get the vote you want?

HalfBloodPrincess · 05/01/2019 14:31

I just think it’s ironic that the consensus is that people who voted to leave are uneducated and didn’t know what they were voting for, yet when people admit to not voting as they didn’t understand, they’re sneered at and berated for it!

RLOU30 · 05/01/2019 14:35

I didn’t vote as I didn’t understand it all either. I could have invested some time in knowing what way I wanted it to sway, but I didn’t. I haven’t and won’t complain about the end result.

MotherOfDragons90 · 05/01/2019 14:38

No.

When there is a general election you know what your vote means I.e you vote Labour along with enough identical votes there will be a Labour government. If you don’t vote you can’t complain because you had full knowledge of the facts.

Whereas with the Brexit vote MANY MANY people didn’t feel they had full knowledge of these facts so couldn’t vote, because what the hell does brexit mean anyway? We still don’t know!

If over 50% of the population actively voted for us to leave then fine, but it didn’t, the majority either voted to remain or didn’t have a bloody clue.

Mistigri · 05/01/2019 14:38

I didn't vote because the fuckers wouldn't let me.

(I am British and in the group of Britons most affected by Brexit).
