To think the parents in Edward scissorhands don't get the recognition they deserve

Watched Edward scissorhands with the dc. First time they had seen it (they liked it) and first time for ages that I watched it. The couple that take in Edward are lovely, the dad just accepts a stranger in his house and helps to show him the way.

What other excellent parents are there on TV?

OP posts:
Consolidateyourloins · 05/01/2019 07:46

I agree, OP, especially the mum played by Dianne Wiest.

Brenda and Brandon's parents in Beverly Hills 90210
Richie and Joanna's parents Marion and Howard in Happy Days
The Brady Bunch parents
Joey's sister in Dawson's Creek
The parents in The Middle
Home Alone especially the mum (even though they forget their kid)
Honey I shrunk the kids

The parents in the OC. From what I can remember.

Vitalogy · 05/01/2019 08:05

Mum/dad/grandma/grandad in The Waltons.

adaline · 05/01/2019 08:06

Kitty and Red from That 70's Show.

Wigwambam10 · 05/01/2019 08:28

Ma and Pa little house on the prairie

OrdinaryGirl · 05/01/2019 08:43

Wigwam but Ma and Pa used to beat their daughters for the most trivial of infractions!

OrdinaryGirl · 05/01/2019 08:44

(Apologies - I need to RTFT properly. I was talking about the LHOTP books not the TV programme ☺️)

JudasPrudy · 05/01/2019 08:45

Flop even though he's not technically a parent (or is he Confused)

Noteverythingisabingthing · 05/01/2019 08:47

Not the parents in home alone! I think they are terrible, falling for Buzz's lies, he is always winding Kevin up then when he retaliates he is the one who gets in trouble. I like the parents in the middle too, also the parents in cuckoo.

Noteverythingisabingthing · 05/01/2019 08:48

Flop is so annoying! He panders to Bing and never pulls him up on anything, his endless patience is irritating Grin

Vitalogy · 05/01/2019 09:06

but Ma and Pa used to beat their daughters for the most trivial of infractions! I can't remember that. I think the worse they got were extra chores. In fact I remember one episode where a boy was getting beaten by his father and Pa helped the man see his error. If you can remember an instance of this please tell.

Vitalogy · 05/01/2019 09:09

Sorry, I've just read you second post OrdinaryGirl. The books were like that then Confused

elQuintoConyo · 05/01/2019 09:11

Beverley Hofsteder no, but Leonard's dad is cool.

Baby's parents in Dirty Dancing, especially for the early 60s.

All of the mums in Mom Grin

Alicia Florrick's mum in The Good Wife is a riot!

Joe Pesci's mum in Goodfellows - fed her son and his friends, painted him a picture of two dogs on a boat (one looking one way, one looking the other) and told him off for having a smelly car.

OffToBedhampton · 05/01/2019 10:14

Beverly Goldberg in The Goldberg's is my guilty secret favourite!!
She's a "Smother" but oh! the love she expresses for her DC & in her antics! 😂😂

But back to OP , yes, the parents in Edward scissorhands who take him in are fantastic, kind, patient

But the all-time best (film/TV) parents have got to be LeahAnne and Sean Tuohy in The Blind Side (it's on Netflix now) and how amazing they are to their DC and Big Mike.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 05/01/2019 10:17

elQuinto I was coming on to say Baby's parents in Dirty Dancing; her relationship with her Dad is played so beautifully.

Gomez and Morticia Addams always gave sound advice to their offspring, too.

Triglesoffy · 05/01/2019 10:17

The Home Alone mum is awful!

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 05/01/2019 10:19

And the parents in Easy A - every scene with them is sheer brilliance.

Feeebeee · 05/01/2019 10:21

^ they’re my parenting role models

madeyemoodysmum · 05/01/2019 10:21

Kevin and Perry. ( Kevin’s parents are fab)
Gavins parents outragous but brilliant

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/01/2019 10:22

Steve Martin whenever he’s the dad! Parenthood, Cheaper by the dozen, Father of the bride. Mary Steenburgen, Diane Keaton and Bonnie Hunt were the lovely mums.
And Lesley Manville as Mum.

madeyemoodysmum · 05/01/2019 10:23

Molly and Arthur Weasley

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 05/01/2019 10:27

Mary Steenburgen in Stepbrothers; they're on the front lawn shouting "I will fuck you up" and she's hosing them down crying "what the fucking fuck". I cried laughing the first time I saw that scene.

elQuintoConyo · 05/01/2019 22:33

Diane Weist in Parenthood.
Diane Weist in Lost Boys, along with her (character's) dad.
Diane Weist is wonderful in anything, including Colin Hanks' mum in Brief Pieces (or Broken Pieces? I can't remember... A Life in Pieces? ).

Flannelled · 05/01/2019 22:37

I aspire to be the female version of Baby's Dad. He's so patient and kind and willing to admit when he's wrong.

The parents in Edward Scissirhands are fab.

ViolaLucyofTirol · 05/01/2019 22:40

I love Herman Munster's 'Life Lesson'
