To think buying a £52 eyeshadow pallet for 9 year old is just madness?

I'm talking about the James Charles pallet. £52 for eyeshadow and blusher. My DD9 wants to spend her Christmas money on it but I have said a firm NO! A lot of her friends got it for Christmas (I know this is true as have seen their mothers show it off on Facebook). Each to their own and all that but £52! AIBU?

My dd has just announced she wants new make up. Something in the Air. Shes coming up 11 and doesn’t wear make up much. I’ve talked to her about cruelty free and we aware going to Superdrug to buy something like make up academy with her Christmas money. A good price and nice coloured eye shadows. We should get a lot For the £25.

BlancheM · 05/01/2019 10:02

No, it's legit stuff for adults and makeup artists. Not a toy for children. No.

potatoscone · 05/01/2019 10:06

Fuck sake! 7 year olds watching make up tutorials to learn how to apply their expensive make up Hmm
What's wrong with buying your SEVEN year old niece toys for Christmas Confused

I swear I live on a different planet.

WeMarchOn · 05/01/2019 10:07

I follow him on Instagram, he is amazing but if i was spending that kind of money I would rather Estée Lauder or such like.
Luckily my 11 year old doesn't know about him yet!!

JennyHolzersGhost · 05/01/2019 10:09

Are these kids using this makeup to paint their faces and play-act as tigers, clowns, etc? Or are they wearing it to ‘look pretty’? I bet it’s the latter. (And is it’s the former then they really don’t need a fancy makeup palette to do so).

Jeanclaudejackety · 05/01/2019 10:13

James Charles is a joke anyway
Get her some huda or something

whassupmissus · 05/01/2019 10:18

I would be more than happy with that. It's her money and it's better than buying bloody fortnite skins which is what my son wants to spend his on

Believability · 05/01/2019 10:36

9 year olds and expensive make up. Absolutely no way, not even open to discussion. At a push some cheap Rimmel / MUA bits to play with at home but even then I would almost certainly have said no.

My 13 year old doesn’t want makeup yet and even now I’d be hard pushed to let her spend £52 on makeup, I wouldn’t spend it on myself. I’m very aware of the need to follow the crowd, she has ridiculously over priced trainers, perfumes, denim jackets etc but you do need to draw the line somewhere and I suspect this would tip the line for ms

emzw12 · 05/01/2019 10:47

I've just googled and you can get them cheaper than £52 online.

drawn · 05/01/2019 10:55

Glad she has a mom like you who is teaching her to stay on the right path.

9 years olds don't have a true understanding of money. It's a shame other parents don't see this which makes people like you look bad! You are doing the right thing by your daughter, don't give in she will be better off for it in the long run. Well done you 👍

MidniteScribbler · 05/01/2019 10:55

Of course makeup is sexualising

It's not. It's people choosing to put coloured liquids and powders on their faces for any reason that they choose to. The only people sexualising it are those that are saying that putting coloured liquids and powders on your face means you want someone to have sex with you.

NutElla5x · 05/01/2019 10:56

I think your DD's friend's mothers should spend less time showing off on FB and more time with their children doing fun things with them, building up their self esteem, and teaching them that life is about much much more than what you look like. And they should take their fucking smartphones off them while they're at it. Let kids be kids ffs!

Birdsgottafly · 05/01/2019 11:02

CherryPavlova, I certainly don't wear lipstick to look younger and still fertile.

How does painting my toenails purple fit in, when I'm celibate and never show my feet?

Your talking out of your arse.

Cheekylittlenumber · 05/01/2019 11:03

It’s upsetting to me a child so young is so conscious of brand names. I get wanting makeup but that pressure to get that specific brand must be coming from somewhere. I think it’s good to teach children that sometimes you pay for quality, and (you would bloody hope!) a £52 make up palette would be long lasting/better quality in some way. But, I think at 9 years old she wants it for the novelty, and not because it will last her years!

ShadyLady53 · 05/01/2019 11:11

@NutElla5x Absolutely!

GahWhatever · 05/01/2019 11:19

It's £39 not £52. Not that £39 is a great price.
It was 14YO DD's top gift this Christmas and they were really hard to get hold of on release but in stock now.

The palette is very vibrant: it's for doing James Charles signature artistry looks rather than every day wear, so not really a great choice for a 9YO wanting to put on a bit of makeup for out and about at parties. We've had some (loud) discussions since Christmas on what is and isn't suitable for daytime wear since DD got this!

It would be great for dramatic makeovers (indoors)or Halloween makeup but realistically for £39 she'd be better off with something in more muted shades. But this isn't about being realistic, she's a 9YO so any palette will essentially be play makeup for her. It's her money and this is her choice. Resist the urge to be precious about it because of the cost: let her wreck it, at least it will get lots of use!

This thread makes me so sad. What sort of world are we living in where a 9 year old child desperately wants a £52 designer make up pallet??

This isn't a criticism of the OP or her daughter. It's just a sad reflection of society today.

Confusedbeetle · 05/01/2019 11:21

shocking that a 9 year old wants/gets make up. Shocking that she has this amount of money to spend. What life lessons are going on here?

goldengummybear · 05/01/2019 11:22

You can't expect young children to watch these celebrities on YouTube every day and not occasionally ask for their ridiculously overpriced products. Lots of mc people only allow CBeebies for this reason. I can watch QVC once a year and end up wondering whether to buy their new miracle mop or whatever. I'm surprised that 9 year olds are watching these makeup "gurus" considering how adult their banter is. They talk about stuff like orgies and sex you know? There are much gentler ones around like Zoella who's overpriced crap but it's more at the under £20 mark,

My dd is much older but bought a Kylie Jenner Lip Kit a few years ago and learned her lesson. As they were (are?) only available in the US she ended up stung twice- the product was overpriced and she had a customs charge to pay. Does your dd have a good track record for looking after her stuff? I think I read at Xmas about someone's child wanting his makeup brushes for £150 Shock😵 I'd be very concerned that she'd be asking for that next!

goldengummybear · 05/01/2019 11:24

I meant people use CBeebies to protect little kids from advertising. YT makeup "gurus" are all about selling their merchandise.

potatoscone · 05/01/2019 11:24

It's just a sad reflection of society today.

Only because people can't say 'NO'

europepmc.org/abstract/med/8314194. On toenail painting...

I’m afraid the research base would support my views on makeup as a sexualisation tool. Why do you think women across the globe make their lips and cheeks more red and their eyes appear more defined?

chickhonhoneybabe · 05/01/2019 11:27

Glad she’s had a rethink. The revolution palates are really good quality and the I ❤️ Revolution ones, have some in pretty chocolate shape palates.

chickhonhoneybabe · 05/01/2019 11:36

Palette I mean 🤦🏼‍♀️
