Bathing in dettol

So I was chatting to my friend about what we were doing after work, (we work in a restaurant), and she said she was going home to have a dettol bath. I though she was kidding as she has a bug, but no. Turns out she has a 45 minute soak in dettol every night, then changes the water and has a 45 minute bath in 'normal' bathwater. Is this a thing??????? AIBU to think that's so bad for your skin and fufu. Dettol's website (of course) say it's fine, but surely your killing germs bad or good.Confused

Fr3d,

So you mean my childhood agony in disinfectant baths with open eczema wounds was a Good Thing?

Glad to hear it! It did hurt, though. But I suppose pretty much everything did (I went to school in bandages to prevent me from bleeding / oozing over everything, so I was a pretty extreme case!)

hollylove · 04/01/2019 19:47

In my home country, dettol baths are very common and encouraged for new mums.

Never known it to be an everyday thing though Hmmmaybe she has BO issues

MrsTommyBanks · 04/01/2019 19:51

After I had my 1st born, the midwife recommended a capful of savlon in the bath.
It was so lovely I got addicted, made skin really soft.
My fufu is fine, altho I gave savlon up a good few years ago.

MammaSchwifty · 04/01/2019 19:55

Also, please can someone explain about the toilet paper tap thing? I'm so confused... Can someone explain why

mountainlakes · 04/01/2019 19:59

I put a couple of drops of dettol in the bath if the dcs have grazed or cut themselves, especially if its got pus in it.

WindyWednesday · 04/01/2019 20:01

Ok, I googled the tap stamp thing, it looks awful and serves no purpose so I’m still confused

echt · 04/01/2019 20:05

God, I remember Dettol in the bath as a child in the 60s. But then baths were only weekly.

Madbengalmum · 04/01/2019 20:06

Used to get dettol baths as a kid in the 80's, especially if i had scrapes.

GoofyIsACow · 04/01/2019 20:09

Apparently you stamp the bog roll with the damp tap end to stick it in place... who the fuck has time for that?!

I love a dettol bath.

DangerMouse17 · 04/01/2019 20:10

I love dettol baths...and in my culture it's quite common. I got back into them about a year ago when I had an eczema flare up. It stops the weeping and the itch. The smell is just fabulous!

Quite fancy a bath now Grin

MrsJayy · 04/01/2019 20:14

I am reading the thread and smelling hot dettol brings back memories, btw i forgot what the op was about I think 90 minutes disinfectant baths are a bit much every night.

canigetaliein · 04/01/2019 20:21

Thanks Oddsocksandmeatballs didn’t realise it came in liquid form. I want some now!

Birdsgottafly · 04/01/2019 20:25

"Yes, child of the seventies, regular Dettol/Savlon baths back. No idea why though....."

Scabies and impetigo. There were still a lot of horse hair type mattresses and big family bed sharing going on.

I was a child of the 60's/70's and remember the rougher families, usually the Parents were overstretched and/or had alcohol problems. They would be the ones with luce, fleas, mites etc. The kids would be slightly feral (we all were a bit), but they'd be the ones to take home Injured pigeons/other animals/have dogs producing litter after liter etc.

I was advised to take dettol baths after giving birth in 1985. It was on the essential list, given by the MW.

Antibiotics still weren't as effective as they are now, neither were steroid creams, without being overly harsh and prevention, or early treatment was the best way of dealing with things.

www.dettol.com.ng/products/antiseptic-liquid/dettol-antiseptic-liquid/

I was told about it by a woman at work who washed her lo in it every night, I was horrified! I was thinking like floor cleaner/toilet stuff lol still wouldn’t do it with my pfb btw her kid was like constantly sick.

Birdsgottafly · 04/01/2019 20:28

canigetaliein, it comes in a spray as well, which is really good if a young child doesn't want to be touched. They can even do it themselves.

Handy for pierced ears etc.

Birdsgottafly · 04/01/2019 20:34

"Over-cleanliness is linked to leukaemia"

No child of the 70's and earlier were over-clean, dettol baths or not.

Jiminybikkit · 04/01/2019 20:35

You can get Dettol soap as well. I've bought it in bulk from amazon. I had an awful run of cysts and boils around my inner thighs for about 18 months, and nothing would shift them (not an std before someone suggests it) I used Dettol soap and had a weekly Dettol bath for about six weeks and they disappeared, never to return

topcat2014 · 04/01/2019 20:39

Now, I have horrific eczema, and will often (maybe every couple of weeks) have a bath with bleach in it - it really helps.

Was actually suggested by my dermatologist.

How's that for you..

InspectorIkmen · 04/01/2019 20:44

70s child here and I remember the Dettol baths! And the insanely excessive use of Badedas. Or Fenjal. It’s a miracle we weren’t all walking round with chronic thrush!
My grandmother had a particular fondness for TCP - can you even get that anymore?

Lilimoon · 04/01/2019 20:46

The midwife ran me a dettol bath after I had my DD who is 11 now. She also recommended salt baths to help with healing.

arranbubonicplague · 04/01/2019 20:49

Anybody else remember the strong scent of Wright's Coal Tar soap or Spirits of Soap used as a shampoo? Those and carbolic soap at school?

HariboLecter · 04/01/2019 20:50

Birds the best thing for pierced ears is saline solution.

Milton salad? Envy not envy

MrsJayy · 04/01/2019 20:50

Dettol bar soap is great for spotty skin i use it if i get a break out i have some i bought from the £shop

Claudia1980 · 04/01/2019 20:52

Wow that is really bad for your skin, vagina it’s just totally unnecessary.
