To book a holiday abroad

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:07

In early April? I really love having a holiday to look forward to and could go around the 10th. All this brexit business is putting me off though as we could potentially not make it.

I know nobody knows the answer but surely a couple of weeks is time for them to get planes back in the sky??

I have the dates marked in my diary
but I am not booking anything till I know what the deals will be

  • on insurance
  • on flights
  • on visas
  • on congestion
etc etc boring, but the reality
shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:15

Hmm, I think I'll have to do that

OP posts:
blackteasplease · 04/01/2019 14:18

I have booked mine but insured it.

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 14:20

I have booked mine but insured it.
Who with?
as I cannot find anybody who will insure against the repercussions of no deal

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:20

Can I ask who your insurance is with? Heard some won't cover it?

Why would Brexit affect going abroad?

I've got Portugal booked for Jan, Italy for Feb and Poland for March.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 04/01/2019 14:21

Either go outside Europe entirely or hold on.

I am flying to Europe a few days before the hammer falls, but my only other planned trip is long haul.

Heaven help me if my (European HQ'd company) decides it wants me over there in the midst of it all)

Dotty1970 · 04/01/2019 14:22

I was desperate to book for this year last year but didn't 😞I feel its just too risky to lose it, I'm waiting to see after March what will happen.... Probably a week in bognor

are you serious?

CallMeSirShotsFired · 04/01/2019 14:23

Tinker Why would Brexit affect going abroad?

Because nobody yet knows what will happen to the various intra-European flying arrangements and agreements. From simple things like immigration and visa requirements to large scale issues like landing slots, passenger taxes, even airline operations for British airlines on the continent, and vice versa.

I've read that some insurers have already stated they will not cover losses arising from trips affected by Brexit related issues.

Dotty1970 · 04/01/2019 14:24

As for insurance, we couldn't find anyone to inside us against any 'brexit ' issues

dorsetdollymixture · 04/01/2019 14:25

Tinker all your trips are before we potentially crash out of the EU with no deal. After that, there are no guarantees we will be able to fly from the UK to the EU. And I'd also like to know who's insuring against the outcome of a no-deal. I wouldn't have thought any companies would?

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:27

Even flights outside of the EU will be affected. The issue will be that flights cannot take off from UK airports at all.

And I'd love to know who that insurance is with too. I can't find any at all

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:28

So long haul vs short haul doesn't make a blind bit of difference otherwise I would!

Insurers will use any reason the purpose of not paying out, that's not new news. Insurers are in the business of scare mongering.

I just think it's ridiculous (personal opinion) to worry and not book things because of 'if this or that'.

EU countries aren't going to suddenly stop letting tourists/visitors in. The visa requirements etc if there were big changes needed wouldn't be installed for months, if not years, it'll just carry on as normal for now.

We'd simply go on as we are because in reality it's not feasible for the EU to just 'stop'.

It's all paperwork and red tape anyway - nothing will happen suddenly.

OP, just book it and look forward to it! All my friends/family have trips booked and no one is worried in the slightest.

MakeAHouseAHome · 04/01/2019 14:30

Phaha what a bunch of whack jobs...

Book the holiday. People need to stop being hysterical.

dorsetdollymixture · 04/01/2019 14:31

OP I've read somewhere that the UK-EU have agreed that planes can fly through EU airspace, so effectively stating long-haul will be fine.

Jocasta2018 · 04/01/2019 14:33

I'm going to Portugal but returning the 20th March...!!

TinkerSpy · 04/01/2019 14:34

Those worrying are worrying over nothing.

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) says that while some things may change after Brexit, whether there is a deal or not, there's no reason to be concerned when booking a holiday.

"The European Commission has said that even in a no-deal scenario, UK travellers won't need a visa," Abta said.

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:36

The issue i read about was that aviation licences, safety agreements etc for all of our planes are based in EU legislation. Therefore, until these are rewritten they will be grounded in the event of no deal brexit. How long will it take to rewrite?

Tinker - insurance companies are not in the business of scaremongering. They are in the business of risk.

I'm not willing to risk 4 grand on an uninsured holiday when things are so uncertain. A toy plane shut Gatwick down and we can't cope with leaves on the line. You completely sure everything will just carry on as normal?

OP posts:
TinkerSpy · 04/01/2019 14:36

@MakeAHouseAHome totally agree! Why do people panic? Especially when there's plenty of research explaining why NOT to panic available. People literally make shit up.

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:38

There's plenty of research stating it will cause issues too. I'm not talking about visas. I'm talking about laws.

OP posts:
TinkerSpy · 04/01/2019 14:38

OP I really don't know why you're posting if you don't want to be reassured. If you're that worried, don't book it. Simples.

RChick · 04/01/2019 14:39

I fly out 29th march... perfectly happy to be stranded in spain.

shpoot · 04/01/2019 14:54

Oh I do want to be reassured. But need something a bit firmer than that! I'd be happy to be stranded. In Spain but can't go til April!
