To book a holiday abroad

In early April? I really love having a holiday to look forward to and could go around the 10th. All this brexit business is putting me off though as we could potentially not make it.

I know nobody knows the answer but surely a couple of weeks is time for them to get planes back in the sky??

I'm not now concerned about the actual travel - the EU has said that flights will happen (but only on the 2018 timetable so if it's a new route this year it won't happen) and the EU has also said visas won't be required from UK residents for stays of up to 90 days until they have their ESTA type system running which I think is from 2021.

But insurance cover, healthcare issues (validity of EHIC card) etc are more of an issue.

I am going to Germany in a couple of weeks to get in a trip before Brexit so hoping for no snow or other bad weather conditions to stop me going!

Satsumaeater · 04/01/2019 14:55

OP why not go to the Channel Islands instead? Weather could be amazing in April, you don't need to go to Spain.

shpoot · 04/01/2019 15:01

The Channel Islands are a pain for us to get to from the north. We could stay in the UK of course. Was just after some sunshine. Happy to go outside of EU though as long as the flights will go and I can get insurance. Sounding more positive

We are booked to go abroad .Need to renew passports and book flights and we are doing accommodation and flights separate. Accommodation has been booked since last year .We are not going until the summer but needing to book flights soon ,as far as i can tell it is an established flight route as it is a holiday destination. If i am honest i am not too worried but all we can do i suppose is what wait and see how it pans out .

Dotty1970 · 04/01/2019 15:36

I wish I could have booked the holiday we wanted but didn't as can't risk losing it all.
No insurance covered it.
I will book when things are clearer 👍

RevRichardWayneGaryWayne · 04/01/2019 16:07

I saw an expert saying you need to book a package with a provider whos registered with ATOL protected - that way if your holiday is cancelled you will be protected and will get a refund.

If you book separately and the flights cancelled you would be covered for the flights but not the hotel or other costs.

Insurers will use any reason the purpose of not paying out, that's not new news. Insurers are in the business of scare mongering.

Any excuse to not pay out I agree - but they're not selling any policies in the first place here - how does that make them money? They scare monger to push their products, not to sell nothing.

am off to spain on a family holiday flying 24 th May I am not the least bit concerned .but am slightly getting over excited!!

shpoot · 04/01/2019 16:21

Enjoy. I'd risk booking for May or summer. It's being so close to the actual date that's not great

RevokeRemainReform · 04/01/2019 16:23

I'm no alarmist but I'm not risking booking anything in Europe til I know how this shit storm is going to play out.

Quietrebel · 04/01/2019 16:26

I'd say wait for the vote on May's withdrawal agreement to happen (week of the 14th jan I believe). If it passes in the Commons then you can go ahead without any worries.

Minniemountain · 04/01/2019 16:32

DH is driving back from a ski trip in France on 30th March.
Other than that, we're visiting PILs in Spain with DS in October rather than Easter holidays.

How long is he budgeting for crossing the channel?

Severide08 · 04/01/2019 16:34

RevRichardWayneGaryWayne that is helpful ,thanks Grin.Ours is booked but you dont pay until you get there ,its done through one the big travel firms but you book private with the property owner .You can cancel free of charge until a few days before so it is not a worry if the worst did come to the worst which i seriously hope it wont .

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 16:37

@Tinkerspy
Especially when there's plenty of research explaining why NOT to panic available
Could you link to the research that says it will all be fine if the UK leaves with no deal?

anniehm · 04/01/2019 16:38

I've had a note from my annual travel insurance reminding me that any delays or costs related to brexit on trips booked after the 29/3/17 are not covered but they would assist us as much as they can. I'm not booking is the bottom line, well I've booked a cruise for later but it's out of Southampton so not flight dependant.

ChristmasFlary · 04/01/2019 16:38

I'm going New York end of May. Thought not being EU it wouldn't be affected Confused. Am l wrong,

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 16:41

ChristmasFlary
New York by the end of May should be OK
its the biggest business route in the world for airlines
it will get sorted sooner than most Smile

Minniemountain · 04/01/2019 16:41

Ta1kinPeace he and his friend are discussing that tomorrow. I can manage DS so he "just" needs to be back for work on the Monday.

2Brieornot2Brie · 04/01/2019 16:43

Do people really think that all flights in and out of the U.K. will be grounded? Ridiculous.

We already have two trips this year. Early April in EU is the first one.

Minniemountain · 04/01/2019 16:51

I'm not expecting flights to be grounded but for border control to take much longer whilst the new process beds in. And I don't fancy queuing for hours with a 5 yo.

Manycatsandallthegin · 04/01/2019 16:55

Oh come on now, the air/travel industry brings too much money to our economy and the eu economy. Its not going to come to a halt!

Re aviation laws based on eu legislation, they’re BASED on eu legislation. Just because we’ll have left the eu wont mean certain laws wont exist on x day.

I have holidays booked in April and June. Might be a bit slower in the airport at immigration but thats about it!

And I say this as a hard remainer!

BlitheringIdiots · 04/01/2019 16:55

It's been announced that Europe will allow planes to fly etc so long as UK reciprocate which they have said they will even in the event of a no deal. Stop panicking and go on holiday

I paid final balance of our April holiday yesterday

I8toys · 04/01/2019 16:59

We off to Prague, Berlin and Vienna at Easter. Just get on with it and see what happens.

Ta1kinPeace · 04/01/2019 17:00

The planes will fly. I think we all agree that is sorted
but the unknowns are

  • driving licences
  • customs clearance
  • pet passports
  • insurance (lots of Brits travel with only an EHIC or even nothing)

and until we know if there will be a deal of some sort, it seems foolhardy to me to risk my money booking for April
