to wonder why people pay for spa breaks?

I don't get it. The spa hotels cost about £250 for one night, without including any food, check in 3pm and check out 11am the next day.

You also have to pay extra for treatments.

Why do people pay so much just to sit by a nice indoor pool and use a steam room? Spa breaks are very popular so please tell me if I'm missing something!

No one says you have to spend £250 on them. I stayed in a lovely cheap hotel with gorgeous food and massive rooms then paid £50 for a day at a nearby Spa: infinity and hot whirlpools overlooking the lake, sauna, steam, essential oil massage, glasses of champagne, fluffy robes. It was bliss.

If your get a good deal they can be reasonable - and very very relaxing!

Most times I have gone it’s not that much more than dohpnner and overnight. We usually arrive earlier than check-in, swim, treatment and laze by the pool. Check out only means leaving the room. Pop suitcase in car, then back to spa for a lazy spa and maybe massage.

Everyone is different - but I enjoy a spa break.

peachypetite · 03/01/2019 21:59

You can get really good deals and packages. £250 a night is excessive

HappilyHarridan · 03/01/2019 22:00

MiniMum is it Carey’s Manor? I love the Thai food there, and the spa is good although I prefer a spa with more beds round the pool.

HappilyHarridan · 03/01/2019 22:01

HugandRoll which region are you in?

TheGlitterFairy · 03/01/2019 22:02

Love a good spa break - day or overnight - pure bliss!!

flumpybear · 03/01/2019 22:05

I go to spas regularly and pay less money but it includes dinner breakfast and lunch, also arrive pm and stay til 5pm at least the next day

Til89 · 03/01/2019 22:05

I love them. Never paid anywhere near £250!

Amazonian27 · 03/01/2019 22:06

I haven’t done a spa break but live close enough to a centreparcs 30 mins away to make going on a sneaky spa day for a birthday without the DC a worthwhile lovely blissful treat. Lots of different heated fragrant rooms to move between, lots and lots of places to relax and a lovely heated outdoor pool to swim and chill in. That is worthwhile especially if they have an offer on with lunch thrown in.

StripLynchet · 03/01/2019 22:10

It's my idea of hell. But a very kind friend gave me a voucher for my birthday last year so I am going to have to conquer my prejudices and go! To be fair, I love to swim and enjoy a massage, but don't like the idea of wafting about in a borrowed robe and showing people my unkempt feet.

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/01/2019 22:13

If you'd been on one you'd know they don't cost that much at all. I've paid less than £150 for an overnight stay in a MacDonald hotel with spa access, a treatment, a three course meal, and breakfast.

I go because it's a relaxing environment where I can meet my best friend, who lives at the other side of the country, and we can catch up and have a break from the stresses of parenthood.

HTH.

bookwormsforever · 03/01/2019 22:15

Not all! My local spa does a spa day including lunch and two trapeatments from £90 per day. No kids allowed. Relaxing atmosphere. Water beds. Day bed room. Fucking fabulous!! Bargain.

Dinner, B&B is form £40. Bargain!

Are you talking about Champneys? They are good but expensive!

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/01/2019 22:16

If people are paying £250 for what you describe then they're either going somewhere very high end or not putting any effort into getting a deal as you can get an overnight stay cheaper than that, or you will be allowed to stay in the spa longer than 3 pm till 11 am the next day, or meals will be included.

I only ever do spa days, it's all about the hot bubbly water for me. It's £64 for the day with lunch and wine at the one I go to, very luxurious and award winning. There are lots of outdoor pools, beds and jacuzzis and if you go on a nice day in the summer it is like being in an exclusive beach club abroad, well worth the money. And there's lots of other pools, steam rooms, saunas and relaxation beds inside too.

Stardustinmyeyes · 03/01/2019 22:16

Strip well you'll need to kempt your feet before you go, or have a pedicure.
Seriously why unkempt, kempt is not a proper word, it's like replenish, nobody plenishes their glass.
I'll just fuck off now and leave you to your lovely spa reminiscing.
I love them by the way

BumbleBeee69 · 03/01/2019 22:17

I don't get it. The spa hotels cost about £250 for one night, without including any food, check in 3pm and check out 11am the next day.

None of the ones I have been to with friends have cost that much, they are generally around the £100 mark. If I'm having a weekend alone I am happy to pay £££££s if necessary for the right place. All include food and at least one treatment and use of the spa.

You also have to pay extra for treatments.

Not if you don't want to. Most of the ones I book include at least one 55min treatment and you can add more if you like.

Why do people pay so much just to sit by a nice indoor pool and use a steam room? Spa breaks are very popular so please tell me if I'm missing something

I pay for peace, quiet, luxury and pampering. A huge king size bed all to myself, room service, a pile of books, no phone or tv. If you don't like that then you aren't missing anything at all.

Why do people pay so much money to go abroad with a shed load of other holidaymakers and their noisy children, squash up on loungers next to the pool or on a beach so full you can't see the sand and eat regurgitated British food in crap places? I don't know and I don't care, as long as I don't have to do it.

My feet are very unkempt, I've never had a pedicure and I don't notice or care if anyone else sees them.

Almostthere15 · 03/01/2019 22:18

Well when you factor in that it includes all your meals and drinks it's not much more expensive than a typical city break. I rarely get time away from the dc, a spa break gives me ultimate relaxation. Everything smells nice, I'm comfortable, staff are friendly, it's quiet. I just love it. I try to go 2/3 times a year and they somehow "reset" me so that I have enough energy to keep ploughing on.

But why does anyone spend anything. I'm not that fussed for designer handbags and I don't have my nails done. I can see why people do though.

HugAndRoll · 03/01/2019 22:18

HappilyHarridan I'm in South Wales, so I'd be looking at anything in South/Mid Wales, Somerset, Avon, etc. Roughly 1-2 hours drive (otherwise the travel negates the relaxation).

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/01/2019 22:20

And I never have treatments because that's not my thing. If the weather is nice I'm going for the beach club experience, if it's not so nice, I will still spend time in the outdoor hot tubs, and also in all the indoor hot tubs etc.

PlatypusPie · 03/01/2019 22:20

I am not an obvious candidate for a spa break since I loathe massages but a friend booked a two day and overnight at a very expensive spa venue ie not just a normal hotel with spa attached) for the two of us as a birthday treat. I did enjoy the facial and brilliant pedicure but what made it enjoyable was the two of us padding around in dressing gowns and slippers , or reading or dozing in the quiet areas and enjoying the lovely food.

I have ways I prefer to relax but I can see why it would appeal to others - my friend has found it works really well as a reset for her on stressful occasions and she has the money, so why not that ?

Youmadorwhat · 03/01/2019 22:23

I LOVE spa breaks (we have just booked one) so the room was 170 for the night and then we pay separately for a spa package €119 each which includes a light lunch, two half hour treatments each and use of the thermal suites! We chose not to have dinner at the hotel because we have booked into a Michelin star restaurant for that eve which is 135€ per person (excluding drinks) and because of the price of dinner we are only doing one night away, we normally do two nights (last year we did two night in the most AMAZING spa hotel and that cost us 850 🙈🙈but it was ABSOLUTE BLISS!!
We only do this once (sometimes twice) a year as our birthdays (dh and I ) and our wedding anniversary are within the same two months so it’s a joint celebration. I just find the whole thing so relaxing it is sn ultimate getaway (from 2 DC 🤣)

Some might say it’s crazy money but we really don’t go out much at all and I don’t drink. Everyone has their ways of relaxing and taking a break, that’s mine!

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 03/01/2019 22:23

I was given a spa day as a gift when I had my son. I have never been asked by so many people “ have you been away somewhere , you look amazing”. Literally 8 hours away from my 2 month old - and I only used the free facilities.
On a Spa break can’t you use the Spa all day though even if you can’t check in till 3?
