to wonder why people pay for spa breaks?

I don't get it. The spa hotels cost about £250 for one night, without including any food, check in 3pm and check out 11am the next day.

You also have to pay extra for treatments.

Why do people pay so much just to sit by a nice indoor pool and use a steam room? Spa breaks are very popular so please tell me if I'm missing something!

I don’t get it either. You are really paying for the use of a pool, jacuzzi and steam rooms. Then the extortionate cost of treatments.

littlecabbage · 03/01/2019 21:28

Another one baffled here.

I am also curious, having never been on a spa break.

Timeforabiscuit · 03/01/2019 21:30

Have you had one?

A hefty pricetag means you have a more peaceful and exclusive venue, not catering for hordes of people which makes a place quickly dirty, worn and tired.

Those who can afford the £250 per night, might not have the time to go away for long periods and instead have quick getaways to recharge instead.

Horses for courses!

glenthebattleostrich · 03/01/2019 21:30

I sometimes get the cheap deals which includes dinner, bed, breakfast and a treatment. Mostly so I can enjoy silence and a nice massage.

My 8 year old never stops talking. I work with kids who also never stop taking and singing and shouting. My DH has sleep apnea so either grunts all night or blasts cold air from his breathing machine at me. I'm lucky to get 5 hours sleep a night.

tubspreciousthings · 03/01/2019 21:32

I get it Smile
I went to a posh gym today which also had a spa attached. The enforced relaxation, moving from jacuzzi to steam room to pool to sauna to heated beds to chill out/read a book/go to sleep - it was heaven!

I rarely get the time/space to do any of this, working full time with two young children and there's always jobs to be done, or to things to organise - a spa just makes you stop.

pearlypick · 03/01/2019 21:32

I guess if its with friend(s) its social?

If you wanted peace and quiet I guess you could lie in bed at home all day with the door shut Grin and it would cost you nothing?

Being without cash to spare, I try and do just this - in a small way! I have tried to create "home spa days" sometimes, even if it includes a trip to local pool etc. But I haven't got the nice grounds of some of these places, nor even a garden, so of course its not quite the same.

But, in short, I couldn't justify it myself - unless I was wealthy - so YANBU.

Nottheboreworms · 03/01/2019 21:32

I love a Spa break but don't pay anything like that amount! I've just paid £75 for a Spa day (Inc treatment) lunch, overnight stay in attached hotel, dinner and breakfast the next morning. Mostly I go to catch up with my best mate who lives too far away. We spend the time chatting, resting crap magazines and eating Haribo and Percy Pigs. Smile

Bbbbb27 · 03/01/2019 21:32

2 of my bosses brought me (separate) spa breaks for Christmas. Lovely hotels, cost a fortune. I am very grateful.... we are extremely skint at the moment so seems an even more extautionate amount..Shock

Grumpos · 03/01/2019 21:33

I’ve never fancied a spa break but reading pp comment about doing it for the peace and quiet I am now tempted!

Baby is too young to leave rn but I could start saving for a luxury night away when he’s a bit older. 8 hours sleep and an hour long foot massage, sign me up!

StickyShoes · 03/01/2019 21:34

Because you lie in a robe in a warm room drinking prosecco without a care in the world.....so why not?!

Nottheboreworms · 03/01/2019 21:35

That should read resting and reading crap magazines...

Timeforabiscuit · 03/01/2019 21:35

Full disclosure - i took a spa day out in a nearby city, I mithered, read my book, switched off my phone, had a massage, wandered round for a spot of lunch, lounged about in the different experience rooms - didnt have anyone with me and I could do whatever I wanted for the first time in a long time (9yrs) I wasnt on call for small people being sick, work or other assorted disasters.

IT WAS BLISS

adaline · 03/01/2019 21:36

Why spend £250 on anything unnecessary then?

StoneofDestiny · 03/01/2019 21:37

I do lots of hotel breaks and an occasional spa break. The spa breaks, if you have a good one, can be very restful with lots of facilities to help you slow down and chill out. If I stay in a normal hotel I'll do visits and trips during the day and just come back to the hotel for meals. If on a spa break I'll be just staying at the spa having saunas, steams, swims, massages, scrubs and other treatments - just indulgent pampering really. Prefer to do this in winter.

Shockers · 03/01/2019 21:37

We just had a week on an island in the sun and ate out for every meal for the same price my sister paid for 3 days in a spa hotel which she and her husband never left.

We are baffled by one another’s choices Grin.

Timeforabiscuit · 03/01/2019 21:40

It's quiet, it's grown ups only, everyone is polite and nice, its clean, nice smelling and pleasant.

Lets face it - its the antithesis of softplay...

Leeds2 · 03/01/2019 21:41

I would pay not to go one one!

I often spend the night in a hotel room, order room service, have complete peace and quiet without any (to me, horrible) spa activities at a much lower price.

I LOVE a spa break. Has to be the right spa though. They are really relaxing. My DH loves them too. Don't knock it til you've tried it!

We go to a spa reasonably regularly in the new forest and the spa area is amazing. There is a massive pool with various jets, a steam room, sauna, laconium, tepidarium, experience showers, ice fountains,m etc etc. There is also a quiet room and a relaxation room where you phone someone and they bring you food and lovely smoothies. They serve Thai food which is amazing.

It's brilliant. Like a little holiday. You can't help but be relaxed after a day at a spa. I usually get a deal with treatment and lunch or something which makes it much better value.

MakeAHouseAHome · 03/01/2019 21:47

I go on spa breaks ALOT. As in overnight spa breaks. 4/5* ones. Including dinner and breakfast. I have never paid more than £100 pp.

If someone is happy to pay £250 then good for them but it is perfectly possible to have amazing spa stays at a fraction of that cost.

BirdieInTheHand · 03/01/2019 21:48

I understand people like different things but peace, quiet and tranquility combined with absolute relaxation, the opportunity to read, doze and have the occasional glass of champagne is perfect.

Topped off by an early night, a great sleep and a big breakfast plus a swim and I struggle to understand what's not to like.

HugAndRoll · 03/01/2019 21:58

Oooh, where do you all go? DP and I would love to go on another spa break. The last one we went to was the Bath Thermae, which was lovely but I'd like to take him to one in a hotel so we can just chill out.

To answer the OP's question as to why: both of my children are disabled, and I myself am autistic and have ADHD. I cannot switch off except for when I'm in a spa. It's the only time I'm not researching, worrying, checking my phone, working out appointments, administering medication, and am actually looking after my own wellbeing. They do me more good in a day than a whole series of counselling sessions, and I plan on having more this year.

ImportantWater · 03/01/2019 21:58

Well my local one is £74.50 for overnight stay (sharing room with a mate), check in at 3, leave at 6pm next day, glass of Prosecco and breakfast. It’s in beautiful grounds, there’s a library, pools, etc - it’s like being in Beauty and the Beast with the lovely castle that wants to look after you and give you nice things. My favourite things are reading, swimming, nice walks and having a bath so it’s like heaven on Earth.
