Twin Nieces first birthday coming up stuck for ideas?!?

Hello!!

So it’s my twin nieces first birthday coming up in a few weeks. It’s just after Christmas which I had got them quite a bit for and I’m super struggling for ideas.

Obviously I’m going to buy them their own gifts. Just struggling for ideas, any help would be much appreciated, I’m happy to buy things that can be kept in their packaging for later in the year in terms of age, as Christmas and their birthday is close.

Thanks in advance!!

Ride on car / bug / truck - were popular with mine at around 18 months.

Play kitchen, Duplo, trains are also good for that kind of age.

TVWife · 03/01/2019 17:23

Clothes? They'll be more interested in the wrapping paper probably.

WeirdCatLady · 03/01/2019 17:25

Picture story books featuring their names? (That can be read to them, obv I know they can’t read yet Wink )

MsSquiz · 03/01/2019 17:26

When my twin nephew & niece turned 1, we bought them this scooter between them and an outfit each (their birthdays are mid-December)

GLTC does beautiful toys. They just turned 2 and my niece got the following from GLTC:
Dolls house and furnishings
Dolls cot
Dolls high chair

Why don’t you get them things that they’ll be able to use in the summer? Sandpit/water table, UV play-tent for playing outside. Ball-pool? My two love their stacking cups. Or bath toys? Oh and separate cards. Annoys me so much when people get my twins a joint card. They’re two people who happen to share a birthday!

DoggaWasFunny · 03/01/2019 17:29

Duplo. We got some big bundles on ebay and my twins still love it at 7yo.

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/01/2019 17:30

Wooden shape sorters.

Toffeeandyawns · 03/01/2019 17:31

As above, I’d definitely go for a lovely summer garden present. You can get such cute padding pools for that age and a few cute watering cans and maybe little swimsuits would be lovely. Then they’d both have plenty to open. Ahhhh I miss having babies to buy for!

rach2713 · 03/01/2019 17:32

I would get something for the summer so they have something new to open again then. I have 2 kids just before Xmas and another 2 just after Xmas so always make sure they have something for the summer to play in the garden with..

Someone got mine a ride on/push along furry dog (like Dexter Dog on Amazon) that they adore and use more and more as they get older.

Books

SinkGirl · 03/01/2019 17:45

Depends so much on the twins! For my twins first birthday, the best gifts we got were books but they’re only really getting interested now they’re 2. Duplo is a big hit with one of my twins, and a choking hazard for the other!

My two had a brilliant ELC walker with ball posting and lots of buttons that made sounds and lights flash, and you could remove that bit from the walker to play with it separately. Their other favourite toy at that age was a basic toy laptop. They played with it for ages.

Also, speaking as twin Mum - don’t get them two of the same thing, it’s really rare they want to play with the same thing at the same time. Some people gift twins really weirdly - one of my friends got two of the same book but one pair of pyjamas for her twins!

I got some lovely Janod chunky puzzles that make animal sounds when you put the pieces in (Janod stuff is lovely, also Batat / B. toys make such lovely toys).

This company also have lovely wooden toys. They’re probably way too young for any role play type play yet but worth remembering for the future www.gltc.co.uk/collections/toys

TVWIFE clothes is a great idea especially as they’re always growing, And I do have a soft spot for baby cloths. Thank you!

I’m a twin Mum, I was always really happy with books. The “That’s not my series”, some Hairy McClairys or a set of Julia Donaldson were all very well received presents.

Alternatively cool bath toys are always great.

Yulebealrite · 03/01/2019 23:13

A big garden toy. You can buy separate presents when they are older. Now they won't realise.

mummyof2boys30 · 03/01/2019 23:14

I got my niece a little tikes car for her first birthday and she loves it

MumW · 03/01/2019 23:15

Clothes or toys suitable for 6 months time. They move on so quickly at this age. (Don't forget it will be summer though).
Bucket and spades for the seaside?

BF888 · 03/01/2019 23:23

doodlejump1980 summer toys I think would be ideal actually! I’ll have a good look and see what I can find. I agree with getting a card each, I did that for them at Christmas. Even though they’re young and don’t know I don’t want them growing up and thinking I treat them the same as they’re twins and my eldest niece different.

Augusta2012 · 03/01/2019 23:27

I would buy them separate presents but the same. If you buy them different things and they both take a shine to one of them that = constant fights over it.

Ditto buying one present, unless it’s something two can play with at the same time, don’t get it, because they’ll fight over it.

NannyR · 03/01/2019 23:31

I bought both my nieces one of these toddler backpacks for their first birthdays. It's been a very useful and hard wearing bag over the last few years, as a nappy bag, nursery bag, holidays, dancing kit etc. I think there was a discount code on mumsnet when I bought them, might still be available.

BF888 · 03/01/2019 23:34

sinkgirl that made me laugh over the two of the same books and one pyjamas, what do they share a leg each Grin

I do usually buy different things for each of them and then they’ll both play with it all at different points. They both have completely different favourites it’s so lovely to see their own personalities.

I’ll have a look at janod and batat/b toys I’ve not seen those before and the puzzles sound fab!

Thanks so much for all of your suggestions.

It was my nieces' first birthday and have had two first Christmases so far (born Oct 2017 and Feb 2018). Not twins but will be close in age as they grow.

For niece #1 first Christmas got her a very nice teddy bear that I hope she will have for years to come (named Finley).

For niece #1 first birthday bought a box of Duplo and hunted down some picture books that I remember having as a small child - they were hard to find, printed in the 80s and early 90s (Serendipty).

For niece #2 first Christmas I got her a teddy from the same brand as niece #1 but different colour and style (Jamie).

For niece #1 second Christmas I got her a purple and pink balance bike. She's still a tiny bit too small (her toes can just touch the ground but she needs to be flat-footed to be able to use it) but enjoys being held on it and pushed around. In a couple of months she'll be able to ride it on her own. I have a silver and pink one for niece #2 ready for 2nd Christmas (she'll be nearly 2 then so shouldn't have any problems riding it right away).

Hope this gives you some ideas!
